Does this cottage have one of the best views of Ullswater? We think so! Wreay Barn is a delightful Lakeland end of terrace barn conversion which was part of the original Wreay Mansions estate in Watermillock, a former hunting lodge popular with the Duke of Norfolk. From its elevated position, it commands spectacular views of Ullswater and the dramatic fells beyond.
As you enter through the front door, the cottage hides the view that lies beyond; but step into the lounge or dining room and all is revealed. Once out on the balcony you will without doubt be back out there again and again with the coffee and morning papers, relaxing in the sun on a summer's afternoon, a pre-dinner drink in the evening enjoying the ever changing light on the hills as the sun goes down; the view is quite simply captivating.
Presented as an upside down house with the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living area on the first floor, this property makes the most of the views across the valley to Ullswater, Sharrow Bay and Howtown. The owners have transformed the cottage to create a beautifully presented, quality retreat which will no doubt form the basis of many happy holiday memories for years to come.
Accommodation in detail
The cottage is approached down a small lane to the rear of the property and the private parking space is right outside the front door.
On entering the cottage there is hanging for coats and jackets and a handy bench with boot storage in the porch. From here a few steps lead upwards to the living area or downwards to the bedrooms. No one will be able to resist hurrying up the stairs and throwing open the balcony doors from the sitting room and stepping out onto the balcony to take in the vista, one of the finest in the Lakes.
Back indoors the living area is bright and airy with high beamed ceilings and the focal point of the lounge is the feature fireplace with log burning stove. The dual aspect dining area again offers views to Ullswater and is the ideal place to socialise with friends and family. The fully fitted kitchen offers all you could need during your stay and is equipped with an electric hob, electric oven and a dishwasher. The utility room is home to the freezer and washing machine and offers plenty of space for storing outdoor gear.
On the ground floor, there are three bedrooms. The master bedroom offers a king sized bed and en-suite shower room and from here a patio door opens to the lower balcony with bistro table and chairs. The second bedroom is a dual aspect double room and the third a pretty single bedroom. In addition to the en-suite shower room, there is also a family bathroom with bath, basin and WC.
The popular Brackenrigg Inn is located just ten minutes from the cottage on the shore of the lake. This welcoming country pub serves great home cooked bar meals and the beer just can't get any more local as it is brewed on site at the Brack & Brew Brewery!
The property has private parking for one car and there is shared parking for an additional car nearby.
Due to the height of the balconies, the owners regret that they cannot accept children under 12 years old at Wreay Barn.
Location
Wreay Barn is situated close to the small settlement of Watermillock, a scattering of farms and properties near the popular village of Pooley Bridge, at the northernmost tip of Ullswater. Pooley Bridge has a selection of village pubs, cafes and shops for the visitors and is popular all year round.
From the north there is easy access from the M6 motorway and A66, with the cottage only 6 miles from Penrith. Wreay Barn is about half an hour from the Central Lakes over the stunning Kirkstone Pass which drops down into unique rugged beauty of Ullswater. Although welcoming to visitors and outdoor adventurers, the area remains unspoilt and peaceful and is quieter than the more central lakes.
Ullswater is regarded by many to be the most beautiful of all the lakes in the Lake District. Much of the lake, its shore and surrounding fells are accessible for visitors to explore, where you will find some of the finest walking, cycling and water sports including sailing and kayaking, along with the amenities of the lakeside villages. One of the most glorious walks in the National Park is the Roman road known as High Street that runs along the eastern fells of Ullswater. Hiking can be combined with a trip on the Ullswater Steamer which stops at Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding and Aira Force. For those who like more challenging walks, the surrounding area has some of the best walking country in the Lakes, including Helvellyn, the third highest peak in England with its precipitous Striding Edge. There are a number of activity centres in the area including water sports tuition and hire, adventure activities and bike hire.
Wreay Barn is within easy distance of Aira Force and Gowbarrow, a National Trust property; a beautiful waterfall with woodlands and landscaped glades and stunning views. Historic properties including Lowther Castle and Dalemain House are nearby and the market town of Penrith is a delight for local food specialities.
