Ullswater Pet Friendly Cottages

Pet Friendly self catering holiday cottages in Ullswater

Ullswater is a serpentine 9-mile body of water and often called ‘England’s most beautiful lake’. Lying in the northern Lake District, Ullswater and the surrounding villages that sit inside this gentle u-shaped valley hold a special charm that once inspired one of the most famous of English poems, William Wordsworth’s ‘I wondered lonely as a cloud’, or sometimes called ‘Daffodils’. The gentle, rural charm of the working landscape in its north meets the glorious peace and quiet of the mountains south of Ullswater. When exploring the many bridleways, cycling trails and walking routes around this special mix of landscape that’s so unique to Ullswater, you can choose from some of the most popular and famous sites or seek out solitude, where you can often find your four-legged walking companion may be the only conversation you get.

This unique charm of the Ullswater landscape is reflected by our hand-picked range of dog friendly cottages in Ullswater where we’re sure there’s something for everyone.

A Pet Friendly Holiday in Ullswater

There’s so much to do when visiting the northern Lake District gem, Ullswater. From visiting South Ullswater and taking on some of the larger challenges of Helvelyn or heading into the craggy Central Lakes; take to the lake itself for a unique view of this unspoilt mountain scenery; enjoy a lakeside walk and local rambles around the villages surrounding Ullswater; or head north into the picturesque Eden Valley.

Ullswater lies between the upmarket towns of Keswick and Penrith, offering a range of supermarkets, markets, and dog friendly eateries, and so ideal for a self-catering holiday with pets. In fact, Keswick has several times picked up the Kennel Club’s ‘most dog friendly town in the UK’ award. Podgy Paws Pet Shop in Keswick is perfect if you need to pick up quality dog supplies.

For mountain and lake walking, biking terrain and water activities, the three villages around Ullswater – Glenridding in the south, Pooley Bridge in the north and Howtown in-between – offer plenty of choice for holiday activities.

Glenridding, at the foot of Kirkstone Pass, is popular with walkers looking to bag the 950m mass that is Helvellyn, England’s third highest peak. To view the Helvellyn range from across the shores of Ullswater, head up Place Fell from Patterdale, where often you can enjoy the views without seeing another walker and pooch will love the freedom of the fells.

At shore level in Glenridding, drink in the serene lake views whilst enjoying a traditional Afternoon Tea at the Lake View Restaurant at the Inn on the Lake. Alternatively, for a unique view of the Ullswater scenery take to the lake with the region’s famous Ullswater ‘Steamers,’ running since 1877 to ferry mineworkers. There are four all-year-round pier’s across the lake and not only is this an excellent way to enjoy the majestic scenery, but is also a great way to explore the area car-free.  For a small charge pets are welcome on board too, plus there’s a licensed bar on-board too!

Look out for the signature ‘daffodil’ signposts of the Ullswater Way, a relatively new 20-mile walking route around the shore. This is best enjoyed in small chunks, resting on the ‘Steamer’ between trails. The diverse wildlife along the unspoilt stretch on the eastern shore, walking from Howtown to Glenridding is a particularly enjoyable walk for dogs as it is very quiet. You can also take in the very satisfying miniature Hallin Fell, a classic Lakeland mountain.

Opposite, on the western shore, Gowbarrow Fell is one of our favourites too. If you find yourself on this side of Ullswater, it’s hard to resist Lake District’s most popular waterfall, Aira Force. A beautiful wooded walk takes you alongside Aira Beck to viewing platforms where the spectacle of the 20 meter waterfall is mesmerising.

From either Glenridding or Aira Force piers, walk to Glencoyne Deer Park where you can find the famous Wordsworth daffodils spot, as well as enjoy a picnic and paddle from the pebbly beach, taking care with pets for the short stretch of the walk that runs alongside the A592.

In the gentle northern Ullswater lies the holiday village of Pooley Bridge, originally named Pooley, because of the pooling of water from Ullswater into the River Eamont, before it’s famous 16th Century bridge was built, connecting it with the A592, the gateway into the Lake District. In Pooley Bridge you can enjoy a refreshment in one of several pet friendly tearooms and pubs and you can also catch Ullswater Steamers to explore the rest of the lake. The Sun Inn has a superb beer garden, ideal for four-legged holidaymakers to enjoyed a well-deserved rest and bowl of refreshing water.

So, if you’re looking for a relaxing break away with all the family, including cherished podgy pawed companions, we know you’ll find what you’re looking for in our Ullswater pet friendly cottages. Alternatively, view our Keswick pet friendly cottages for more of our stylish pooch friendly retreats in the North Lake District.  The Central Lakes also makes for superb dog walking territory, so why not try our Langdale pet friendly cottages.
