The diverse wildlife along the unspoilt stretch on the eastern shore, walking from Howtown to Glenridding is a particularly enjoyable walk for dogs as it is very quiet. You can also take in the very satisfying miniature Hallin Fell, a classic Lakeland mountain.
Opposite, on the western shore, Gowbarrow Fell is one of our favourites too. If you find yourself on this side of Ullswater, it’s hard to resist Lake District’s most popular waterfall, Aira Force. A beautiful wooded walk takes you alongside Aira Beck to viewing platforms where the spectacle of the 20 meter waterfall is mesmerising.
From either Glenridding or Aira Force piers, walk to Glencoyne Deer Park where you can find the famous Wordsworth daffodils spot, as well as enjoy a picnic and paddle from the pebbly beach, taking care with pets for the short stretch of the walk that runs alongside the A592.
