Ullswater is in the quieter northern Lake District yet is only 6 miles from Junction 40 of the M6 motorway. This means you can enjoy a short break without the crowds, so you can get the most out of a relaxing short break.

On Ullswater’s western shore take in Aira Force Waterfall as well as the famous Wordsworth daffodils at Glencoyne Bay. Pooley Bridge, at the northern most tip of Ullswater, is a good place to head for a pub lunch, ice cream or nice tea room. A wander along the water’s edge, watching the lake birdlife, or catching a steamer is as relaxing as can be.

The traffic-free eastern shore of Ullswater is one of our favourites in the Lakes and one of the best place to take in this majestic lake. From the jetty at Howtown there are various walks and this is a great spot for a picnic and Peregrine Falcon and Buzzard spotting, as well as lots of other wildlife. Hallin Fell is a very rewarding, short but steep, climb giving wonderful views of Ullswater’s unique ‘dog leg’ shape.

For those fancying a challenge, why not Ullswater’s famous daffodil waymarks on the new 20 mile Ullswater Way. The third pier is at Glenridding, on the southern shore, which a popular starting point for walkers taking on Striding and Swirral Edge up England’s second largest peak, Helvellyn.
