For keen walkers, there’s always the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of famed fell walker Alfred Wainwright and get ticking off his world-renowned walks.

There’s really no end to the variety of hikes and strolls, which take-in the picturesque patchwork of the Lake District – there’s anything from a flat and push-chair-friendly few-mile stroll along the shores of Tarn Hows to a Helvellyn hike, testing strength and fitness.

And, who could resist sitting and gazing at a magnificent, tumbling  waterfall – particularly one such as Aira Force, near Ullswater, one of the finest waterfalls in the Lake District.

The beauty of a self catering holiday in the Lake District – particularly if it will be walking focussed – is that you can come and go as you please and you can cook up a picnic treat to keep you fuelled up for a full day walk.

If you’ve never walked a fell before, you’ll never forget walking up your first one in the Lake District as the views from the tops – even on easier walks such as Orrest Head, in Windermere – are unrivalled with each giving its own unique perspective over the landscape.

And, because the walks and routes are aplenty, it means there are lots suitable for children too.

Holidays for Literary Lovers
Beatrix Potters Birthday Celebrations

The Lake District is a hotbed for literary lovers (whatever your age!)– from Beatrix Potter to Arthur Ransome to Wordsworth.

And, because many of our holiday cottages in Cumbria are traditional Lakeland stone cottages, you really can feel like you are stepping back in time to when Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth were being inspired by the beauty of the Lake District.

Many of our self catering cottages in the Lake District are on the doorstep of such places.

We’ve beautiful homes close to Hill Top Farm – the former home of Beatrix Potter and near Sawry where Peter Rabbit was created or Derwent Water, which gave Beatrix Potter the inspiration for Squirrel Nutkin.

And, not forgetting the Beatrix Potter gallery – with displays of Potter’s fine artwork.

And, in Ullswater, where William Wordsworth was given the inspiration to write many of his poems – including Daffodils – and in Grasmere, where you can visit his Dove Cottage and Wordsworth House and Garden.

Holidays for Culture Vultures

The Lake District is rich in history, heritage, art and culture. So, self catering cottages in the Lake District are a great way to soak up Lake District life.

Again, we’ve hand-picked our homes so that they are conveniently close to sampling the rich Lake District culture.

In the south Lakes we have lots of beautiful homes close to attractions such as the Abbot Hall Gallery in Kendal, one of Britain’s finest independent art galleries.

And, also in the north Lakes within easy reach of historic homes, such as Hutton In The Forest historic house, in Penrith  – based on a medieval pele towers with 17th, 18th and 19th Century additions.

Plus, it’s not so far to travel to learn about the history of pencil making at the Pencil Museum in Keswick.

And also, The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway where you can travel on a steam engine from sea to mountains, is another great way to see the Lake District.

And, for keen foodies, the Lake District offers up a real feast – from the gastro-restaurants of bustling towns, to ‘out-in-the-sticks’ village pubs serving wholesome Cumbrian food and real ales, the Lake District is perfect for the palette too!
