This well served village is surrounded by spectacular wild landscapes and renowned as a base for outdoor adventure. Coniston was a rural farming community, owned largely by Furness Abbey and its monastic order. They made much of their money farming the now famous Herdwick sheep. Rich in copper and slate, Coniston also became a mining and quarrying village. And, in 1858 a railway was built to service the mining industry, which opened to tourists a year later making Coniston a popular holiday destination loved for its outstanding natural beauty.

Coniston out and about

Our carefully selected holiday cottages are dotted across the Coniston area. All are within easy access of a wide range of excellent eateries serving locally-sourced food. Giving you the best experience of visiting this spectacular part of the South Lakes. Why not drop into Yew Tree Farm Heritage Meats and try some Herdwick Hogget? It has been endorsed by no other than Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Or, eat out at Steam Bistro, located on Tilberthwaite Avenue and choose from a range of delicious foods to suit all tastes.

Activities in the local area include boating out on Coniston Water, just as Arthur Ransome’s characters did in Swallows and Amazons. Hire rowboats and canoes, or take a leisurely cruise from Coniston Launch. Or try the National Trust Steam Yacht Gondola to Brantwood historic house. It is the former home of John Ruskin, eminent Victorian art critic and poet. The house is home to beautiful paintings and furniture. Plus there are quizzes and activities to be enjoyed by adults and children alike.

Ruskin’s final resting place can be found in Coniston, as can that of British speed record breaker Donald Campbell. Campbell died in 1967 whilst trying to break the water speed record on Coniston Water in his rocket-powered boat, Bluebird. The boat now lends its name to a Champion beer brewed at the Coniston Brewing Company. For those of you wanting to sample the tipple, visit the Black Bull pub attached to the brewery on Coppermines Road.

Another popular tourist attract is The Monk Coniston estate. It was owned by Beatrix Potter and donated to National Trust on her deathbed, and stretches from Coniston to Skelwith Bridge.

There are, of course, many wonderful walking experiences to choose from around the Coniston area too. The Old Man of Coniston is one such walk. Here you will be following in the footsteps of the renowned fell walker and author Alfred Wainwright. At 803 meters this walk is a fine challenge for anyone and offers beautiful views from start to end.

If you are a lover of the outdoors, a holiday in Coniston is the perfect place to enjoy some of the best outdoors activities in the Lakes. Some of the excellent activity centres in the area include; Joint Adventures for those looking for adrenaline and an action-packed day out. River Deep Mountain High offering a range of things to do. They cater to families, large groups and team days, as well as individuals. Plus Spoon Hall Pony Trekking, for a great way to enjoy the iconic scenery.

Logistics

Getting to Coniston is easy both by car and by bus, with services running from Kendal and Windermere via Ambleside daily. You can also buy a Ruskin Rambler. The ticket gives you travel on the 505 Coniston Rambler, a return ticket on the Coniston Launch and entrance to Brantwood.

And if you’re travelling to the Lake District without a car, make sure you take a Bluebird Tour. They are famous as the best way to see the area if you’re visiting by bus or train. Throughout Coniston you’ll find excellent activities, great places to eat (and drink local ale) and iconic Lake District scenery. All on the doorstep of our superb selection of Coniston cottages.
