“We had a superb week at Holly Tree Cottage.”

It has been 44 years since I last stayed in Coniston although we are regular visitors to the lakes, I am so pleased we did, Coniston has a heart that is missing from many Lake District villages. Holly Tree Cottage was the perfect base; two double bedroom both en-suite and a real fire. The Cottage was exceptionally clean, well equipped and came with two parking spaces. We had pretty horrible weather, only managing two walking days; one to the Pudding stone and Levers water and one to Black Crag and Tarn Howe. We had hoped to return next year to walk the Coniston Round, but the cottage is already booked solid for most of next year; I am not surprised. We have stayed at three Lakelovers cottages in recent years (this one and two different ones in Grasmere), all spotless and well maintained, let us hope our luck continues as we have just booked one of the cottages in Grasmere. Just to note, the food at the Black Bull and the Crown are not as good as they used to be although the beer at the Black Bull is still good, the Yewdale Inn seems to be closed during the week, so we made full use of the Herdwick Café (excellent bacon baps), the Indian Takeaway and the Co-op which was amazingly well stocked, it even had Sandford Orchards’ Devon Red, to my mind the best cider in the world. The Ruskin Museum is worth a visit although Bluebird is absent until sometime in 2026. If you get a rainy day do go across the ferry to Blackwell House near Windermere, an architectural gem from the arts and craft era. Many thanks to the owners of Holly Tree cottage (and the neighbouring Oak Tree cottage), we hope to return if we can book earlier enough.
