Lake View Locations

All the Lake District’s lakes offer something special. From the fabulous walks around Rydal Water or Tarn Hows to bustling boat activity on Coniston Water. And the vibrant resort activity along the shores of Windermere. But here are some particularly great lake must-do’s.

It is England’s second largest and often called the ‘finest’ of the Lake’s waters, Ullswater. Surrounded by the dramatic Helvellyn fells on its southern tip and gentle pastures of the north. Pooley Bridge in the north has some great pubs and cafes. It’s handy for the splendid market town of Penrith, with an array of artisan shops and local food produce. Also the fabulous shopping centre Rheged is only a 15 minute drive from Ullswater.

Nestled on the north of Keswick, wildlife lovers should head to the quiet lake of Bassenthwaite. It has spectacular views of Skiddaw, England’s highest peak. Plus great fishing and wild bird spotting – if you’re lucky you may catch sight of an osprey.

Relaxation

If a slower pace of life is what you’re after, you’ll be suited to fishing on a tranquil lakeshore. And will be pleased to know that visitors can fish for free on Windermere, Ullswater and Coniston Water, which are good for pike and coarse fishing. Pick up your day or weekly permits and head to some of the freshest, cleanest rivers in the UK for fantastic stocks of brown trout, salmon and sea trout. Perhaps less peaceful, but for families fancying a try at fishing, every May the week-long Annual Cumbria Fishing Festival event is perfect for youngsters to join in.

And if you’re more into sampling fishy culinary delights, head to Windermere bistro Hooked. They serve seasonal seafood, where the menu changes depending upon the availability of local fish supplies, including Morecambe Bay shrimps and local sea trout.

Families will find lots to do at the lakeside holiday report of Windermere. As England’s largest lake there is so much to see and do along its shoreline. Start at the bustling Bowness Bay, where you can pick up Windermere Lake Cruises. Stop off at Brockhole, for stacks of family fun from bike hire and pony rides to treetop nets and adventure playground.

Head North

Head north to the heart of the Lakes, Ambleside. There’s a great selection of outdoor clothing and equipment shops, as well as plenty of must-try eateries.

Combine your cruise ticket with a trip to Lakeside Motor Museum, south Windermere. See a special collection of vehicles, including the ‘Bluebird’ series. These are world speed record breaking cars and boats from the Campbell family. A seasonal shuttle bus is available from Lakeside Pier to the motor museum.

Return to Bowness and visit the much-loved Lakes Aquarium and World of Beatrix Potter.

In and around the lakes, cottages don’t get much better than this collection. Our lakeside or lake view properties are perfect for a truly special holiday in the Lake District.
