Midway between Ambleside and Windermere, in the valley between Wansfell and Applethwaite Common and following the river Trout Beck to Lake Windermere, is the pretty village of Troutbeck; one of the Lake District’s most popular, rural holiday spots. If it is peace and quiet that you’re looking for, you will find it in abundance amongst the craggy hilltops and patchwork fields of the pretty Troutbeck valley, enjoyed from one of our beautiful Troutbeck holiday cottages. Primarily farm and woodland, scattered with farm buildings, cottages and larger houses, almost all of the properties in Troutbeck are 100 years old or more, with many 300+ years old. Most of the village is therefore now a conservation area with many buildings either listed or belonging to the National Trust.
It is with thanks to the great Lake District patron Beatrix Potter, that visitors can enjoy such a wonderfully-preserved piece of English landscape. She farmed Herdwick sheep at local Troutbeck Park Farm, now National trust owned.
This makes Troutbeck a very sought-after area of the Lakes. a holiday in this rural location, which has inspired so many artists, is like non-other. The peaceful valley of Troutbeck sits midway between the bustling holiday towns of Windermere and Ambleside. Which are only a short drive or bus ride away, giving you the best of both worlds.

Troutbeck out and about
Troutbeck, in South Lakeland, is made up of a collection of tiny hamlets. It features a couple of pubs, a church, a village institute, village shop and tea room. There is also a mobile post office, visiting twice a week, perfect for sending postcards home! There isn’t a car park for visitors in the village. But there are plenty of places to park on the road side for vehicles wishing to visit for the day and private parking for at least one car, in virtually all our Troutbeck holiday cottages.
The village is easily accessed on foot, via footpaths and bridleways. There are three buses a day, during the summer tourist season, that bypass the village, but outside of these, you will need to rely on cars, taxis or walking to get you to and from the surrounding towns and villages.
For a glimpse inside traditional Troutbeck life, you must pay a visit to Townend; a 17th century house, now owned by the National Trust and formerly owned by the Browne family for 400 years. Not your usual National Trust stately home, Townend is a great representation of a reasonably wealthy farmer’s family home and a wonderful look into a bygone era.
Dining Out
Make a pit stop at the local village tea room, where you can enjoy a log fire in the colder months. As well as wonderful selection of cakes, shortbread and other tasty treats. Sample the finest local ales and enjoy a tasty evening meal at the very popular Mortal Man pub. – “Everything you imagined an English Inn would be”, the pub promises!
For something a little more glamorous, without breaking the budget, why not visit the Oaks Restaurant. Voted 5 stars on Tripadvisor for its excellent menu and great food.
It’s no wonder that the Lake District’s Troutbeck is such a popular holiday destination. A perfect tranquil retreat away from the bustle of everyday life, unrivalled landscape and views on your doorstep. Plus superb local eateries and easy access to boutique shopping, outdoor sporting activities and historical sites.
If you would like more information about any of Troutbeck self-catering properties, you can ask our dedicated team of customer service and sales representatives, available 6 days a week 9.30am to 5.30pm throughout the year.
