This region is popular among walkers, climber and cyclists from beginners to the pros!
There are various water sports for all abilities too, lots of family activities. Along with historical sites of interest. Plus a wide range of superb eateries and shops, sure to delight! Ullswater is generally considered to encompass three major villages. This includes Glenridding at the south and Pooley Bridge at the north.
You won’t be short of things to do in this popular tourist destination. Also, on the west side of the lake is the beautiful Aira Force Waterfall. It is one of the National Park’s most popular natural tourist attractions. Glenridding is a particularly popular tourist attraction with mountain walkers. They visit the village to scale England’s third highest peak, Helvellyn. For those who prefer flatter ground, Glenridding offers a lovely selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. This includes Fellbites Café and Restaurant, Helvellyn Country Kitchen and the Lake View Restaurant at the Inn on the Lake.

Ullswater out and about
Our Ullswater cottages are placed across the region to give you the opportunity to see and to experience some great Lake District attractions. Ullswater’s most popular tourist attraction is the Ullswater Steamer. Originally designed to ferry mail, mineworkers and goods to and from the Greenside mine from the 1850s, in 1962 it was converted in to a boat tour. The tour travels from Ullswater to Glenridding, with a stop at Howtown. You can board at any three of the piers. Many people catch the ferry from Glenridding to Howtown and walk back along the shore. Popular sights in close by Pooley Bridge include the 16th century bridge. It crosses the River Eamont and gives the village its namesake. Eamont is overlooked by Dunmallard Hill, an iron age fort, which is another popular tourist hot spot.
Ullswater has a strong nautical history, having been a popular sailing destination for centuries. There are marinas placed all around the lake. A select few properties are lucky enough to have their own private jetty on the lake shore. On 23 July 1955, Donald Campbell set the water speed record of 202.37 mph, in the jet-propelled hydroplane Bluebird k7. Ullswater is also home to the annual Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy. Each year at the first weekend in July, 200+ sailing boats compete in two races. They span the full length of the lake in the hope of winning the prestigious award. The competition can be felt in the air and makes for a great spectator sport!
Wordsworth and Cycling
Ullswater was a popular area for quintessential Lake District poet William Wordsworth. One visit in the Spring of 1802 inspired his most famous poem ‘Daffodils’. If you are travelling to Ullswater with children, you may be interested in Pony Trekking at Park Foot, or the Rookin House Activity Centre. Another fun day out for children are the Tale Trails, which are a series of story walks throughout the area. There is a good play park in the grounds of the Sun Inn in Pooley Bridge. It also has its own car park, good home cooked food and a fantastic selection of local ales. For snacks, cakes and lighter bites, why not visit Granny Dowbekin’s Tea room, also in Pooley Bridge… a popular spot with Tripadvisor reviewers.
Ullswater is situated on an extremely popular cycle route. It has connections back to Ambleside and Windermere via the infamous Kirkstone Pass. This road is also suitable for cars and other vehicles throughout the year. However, in bad weather, it is recommended that you make your way to the central lakes either via the A66 and A591 via Keswick or via the M6 and A591 via Kendal. Due to the height at which you cross and often poor visibility.
Our Ullswater cottages offer you a very special home-from-home. With open fireplaces, luxury bathrooms, four poster beds, flat screen TVs, exposed beams and traditional Lakeland cottage postcard exteriors, our family friendly and pet-friendly cottages are the perfect place to stay when you are looking to explore this incredible part of the Lake District National Park.
