Stay in Grizedale and turn one of the best days out in the Lakes into a wonderful holiday. Grizedale is a quiet hamlet that lies just 8-miles outside of the bustle of Ambleside. But it is the forest cycling trails, treetop adventures and famous artist sculptures of Grizedale Forest that gives the area its greatest prominence.
Plus, Grizedale benefits further by being flanked on either side by two of the Lake District’s most magnificent bodies of water, Windermere and Coniston Water. Both lakes offer one of the most extraordinary ways to experience the Lake District – from on the water, either on a traditional steam cruise, adventurous Stand-Up Paddle Board (SUP) or on a private yacht, you’ll feel a million miles away from anywhere.
A holiday in Grizedale is jam-packed with things to do and see yet still benefits from being quiet as it is tucked away from the bustle of the busier areas like Bowness and Ambleside. Here in Grizedale, you’ll find stunning scenery and views that stretch right across the Lake District’s famous mountain ranges, lots of outdoor activities as well as top-notch eateries and great local pubs.
Forestry England maintain Grizedale Forest, offering a busy events calendar of family-fun trails and guided forest explorations, for all seasons. The Forest Visitor Centre and Café is excellent, with a large outdoor playground and cafe, which welcomes dogs as well as muddy boots.
Grizedale is a magnificent forest setting, with miles of paths to explore that weave at different gradients in and around the peak of Carron Crag. Head to the Visitor Centre to pick from eight walking trails, ranging from easy access Ridding Wood Trail to the more challenging Silurian Way. Activities at Grizedale Visitor Centre range from low-level walks to swinging through the trees with GoApe, enjoying a leisurely meal in the café to exhilarating mountain bike rides on the famous North Face trails.
Grizedale is also handy for exploring Hawkshead and Windermere Ferry is on the doorstep, opening your holiday up to Bowness and the beautiful Lyth Valley. The Lake District’s foodie capital, Cartmel, is an easy 40-minute drive away and either of Simon Rogan’s top foodie places, the Michelin-starred L’enclume or more laid-back Rogan & Co, are but a taxi ride away.
Grizedale is an incredible mountain break with the very best Lake District scenery and attractions on its doorstep. Step into Grizedale and enjoy a relaxing break in one of England’s top mountain forests.
