Gable End

Gable End is a charming cottage in a very peaceful spot, with a very comfortable bed, welcome bath and reasonable shower.

The kitchen equipment could probably best be described as adequate. The 'upside-down' room arrangement is brilliant and afforded lovely views in the sitting area. As suggested by a previous reviewer, we moved the dining table across to the window for the week, and that made a great difference. We struggled to make the TV work, despite grappling with the supplied instructions. It really didn't matter to us we're not great TV watchers (so we didn't bother following up) but it might to others. The other issue was that the storage heaters are clearly old and have no controls, so it's an 'on or off' situation. In really cold weather that's probably fine, but in September we really needed just a bit of heat to take the chill off. We only had the small heater on in the sitting room, but it was still too hot. All we could do was open the windows – and that with care as they are clearly in need of a bit of attention. However, neither of these issues detracted from a wonderful holiday in a beautiful location.

While it was lovely poorly equipped in the kitchen area for example a tray to take thins up stairs to dining table.

Gable End is in an excellent location.

It’s not far to walk onto Coniston with pubs and lake. Great walking on doorstep. Very comfy bed. Didn’t use the log burner in the middle of a heatwave but would be very cosy in spring/autumn.

As soon as we drove through the gates at Gable End Cottage and took in those expansive views over looking lake Coniston opened we knew we had booked a special place.

Spending a week here is truly relaxing and once we arrived the only sounds we heard all week were that of the local wildlife, which were complemented with the stunning landscaped gardens which were alive with the fiery colour of Autumn when we arrived. Inside the property the upside down layout worked for us providing everything we needed for a cosy getaway together. Whether that was watching the world go by from the large bedroom window, sketching by the fireside whilst watching the autumn leaves flutter by the large window or cooking up a storm in the kitchen 'Gable End' proved to be the perfect accommodation. There was also a jacuzzi bath for those days where we had overdone it on the fells and needed to relax. Speaking of relaxing it's not often we can totally switch off but this place achieved this with ease, without feeling isolated. Outside if you can be tempted to leave there is plenty to do. There is a short woodland walk down to Coniston which is about a 3 mile round trip if you go all the way to the centre. For lazier legs it is a two minute drive to Lake Coniston which proved a perfect launch spot for our paddleboard session, local attraction like Brantwood the Home of John Ruskin provided ideal days out as does a quick stroll round Tarn Hows which has fantastic views and can be accessed by all. Coniston itself has kept it's charm never getting overdeveloped and overcrowded like some of the other lakeland towns. We love the many local pubs and always call in the Black Bull for a few Bluebird Bitters and a takeaway pack for home. They also do some decent pub grub at a reasonable price. The takeaway Fish and Chips are nice but be sure to bring cash with you. From Gable End we found we were never stuck for things to do. We had day trips to Hawkshead, Ambleside (Peter Rabbit World is a must) and Hill Top to see where the real magic happened. Finally we just want to say a huge thank you to the owners who on hearing we were going to arrive 2 days late to the property due to recovering from illness agreed to extend our stay for free. It truly was a wonderful gesture and gave us time to recover in a stunning environment. They say kindness is always rewarded hence our glowing review and our intention to book again asap. We can't wait to return Michael and Danni x

The sitting room was not as pictured on cottage website which shows a two seater settee facing the fireplace/TV and a single chair at the top of the stairs under a standard lamp.

The settee has been replaced by a single chair. From the chair at the top of the stairs there was no window light to read during the day and it wasn't easy to see the TV so I had to move it each day so it was next to the other chair and because there was no electric socket there to move the lamp, move it back to the top of the stairs to read after dark. The big bedroom window meant a lack of privacy in the bedroom and the bed was hard. The shower was weak and if that is due to limited water/ water pressure due to location why install a jacuzzi! Lots of don't do this/don't do that notices and we were well into our stay before we found the what you can do in the area info in a drawer. Would have been nice if someone had checked all was OK after we arrived.

Slight difficulty in finding the property, the instructions could be more detailed. Microwave would have been useful.

Wonderful cosy ,comfortable and very pleasant cottage.

We were the only ones on the whole estate so very quiet indeed! Just enough warm water for one bath a day ,without any use of shower or warm water anywhere else…. Really appreciated the private garden space allocated to Gable End !

We had a wonderful stay for a couple of weeks in this beautiful cottage surrounded by beautiful grounds and a view across the lake to match.

It was clean and cosy but we were still enticed out by the local scenery and surrounding villages. Walking up the Old Man of Coniston and gingerbread at Grasmere were two highlights.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our one-week stay at The Gables.

The cottage is situated in extremely quiet surroundings and offers beautiful views. We pushed the dining table (normally in a darker corner) in front of the window and enjoyed the views even more! Every room is tastefully furnished and decorated and after long hiking trips it was easy to relax in the very comfortable armchairs and the cosy bed. Contact with Kathryn, the owner, was easy and even her father gave us valuable pieces of advice for further explorations. We highly recommend!

Fantastic location and beautiful gardens. Great walk to Coniston from the property through the grounds. Would have preferred a different layout. Carrying food from kitchen to dining area upstairs could be difficult. WiFi does not work which we found a real issue. Advertised as having WiFi? If you need WiFi, not the property for you. Owners request consideration when using water heater as costs are increasing.

Gable end is an amazing place to stay thank you for Hosting us.

A comfortable holiday house can make or break your holiday. We live in Australia so our accommodation is much different from what how they are run here. I’m glad we took milk tea & coffee with us this was suggested by Sykes & it was very helpful, it’s intense driving hours on the M6 to then have to find a shop to buy a few basics. Thank you for that information.

We have just had the most perfect stay at Gable End.

We cannot fault it, beautiful accommodation, stunning location and wonderful hosts. Will definitely be returning

The property was clean, cosy and the rooms a good size; the kitchen was equipped with what we needed (only one request to the owner to add some normal sized water glasses).

There were thoughtful touches throughout. We found the mattress uncomfortable but flipping it the right way round and popping pillows under the topper helped a lot. The tiled floors need a bit of attention, I didn't like walking around in bare feet. The house is a little way out from Coniston and has no phone signal; it was a real chance to disconnect which we wanted. The wifi worked well. We went as a couple but I would have felt safe and comfortable staying there alone too.

The cottage was clean and well laid out, however.

the water in the bathroom would spill out yellow / brown water, the water was mildly warm, the water heathers would warm up , but not keep you warm.

Decor was nice.

Kitchen very cramped. TV was useless. Storage heating could not be adjusted - the controls could not be accessed. Water was an odd colour - we were assured that it has been tested and was safe. No wardrobe in the bedroom, although there is space for a small one. Sofa and arm chair uncomfortable. Great view from the gardens. The general area is very attractive. Lots of local walks.

This is a very cosy cottage with stunning views.

The bed is very comfortable and there’s plenty of room in the bedroom and living room upstairs too. The Wi-Fi was a bit temperamental and seemed to work better in the mornings. Would like to come back as it’s a great little find!

The gardens are amazing and the entire property is extremely well kept and a great credit to the family. The property was well equipped, comfy and had everything we needed. The bed was a dream (I could still be lay there now!). Highly recommend if you want a relaxing break near Consiton. Thank you to the owners ! p.s I’m sorry I forgot to clean the oven !! Xx

Beautiful located property with stunning views of Coniston Village and lake.

The garden is magnificent and offers a shortcut into town, as well as a variety of local walks in the area. We both enjoyed our stay at Gable End, a comfortable retreat with welcoming hosts and would not hesitate to recommend this lovely cottage

The position of the cottage high up on Fell overlooking Coniston was beautiful. Far enough away from hustle and bustle of Coniston to be so quiet but accessible to town by a short walk. First class, hope to come back sometime

We had a really good week exploring the area.

Always good to come back to Gable End in the evening and relax. Property was warm and comfortable and owners very friendly. We would definitely recommend it.

Gable End is a lovely cottage in a beautiful setting.

It was clean and cosy, with a very comfy bed and a warm log burner. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming. It is an easy walk down to Coniston village or out to find trails for exploring the local area. We would highly recommend staying here and look forward to visiting again!

Be useful to have known what coffee pod machine was there so could have brought correct pods.

Mattress is not awfully comfy, the memory foam seems to sink into a hollow rather quickly. Other than that really enjoyed our stay, cottage is lovely.

A few negatives about The property that prospective guests should be alerted to: 1.

The bedroom is overlooked and not at all private (unless the curtains are closed). 2. No microwave, limited crockery (esp glasses) and no basics available (not even a teabag). 3. Not able to control temperature in property (radiators fixed) and was way too hot. 4. Constant annoying dripping from gutter onto skylight 5. Loose part on bath which kept coming off (spa filter) and hurt your fingers if you weren't careful. 6. Very cramped in kitchen and not practical carrying meals upstairs. 7. One of the most expensive cottages we've stayed in (in view of the size) and weve stayed in lots! Definitely rates one of our least favourite. 8. One plus - the bed was comfortable.

The Cottage was set in the most beautiful secure grounds.

The vendors were so helpful and friendly. The cottage was super quaint and will most definitely return again

The cottage was perfect in every way, clean well equipped and very quaint.

However the garden was quite something else. It was the closest one could get to staying at an award winning National Trust estate. Atkinson Ground is without doubt the most beautiful grounds I have ever had the pleasure to stay in. The view from the site is breath taking and we even had a birds eye view of a Royal visit with the Duchess of Cambridge landing in a Royal Helicopter in a pasture just below our cottage. We both loved our stay and felt extremely sad to leave this little paradise above Coniston lake. Definitely going back next time I visit the Lakes.

The cottage was excellent and catered for every need. Set in gorgeous gardens and very picturesque surroundings. A very warm and welcoming family where nothing was too much to as for . Some great advice and local knowledge which made our stay a fabulous one I would not hesitate in returning to Atkinsons Ground a beautiful place and an ideal base 1st Class.

On arrival the first thing that strikes you is the amazing view.

The elevation gives you that enviable position. Gable end is a delightful and relaxing cosy cottage and for us had everything we needed, possibly a microwave but we managed quite happily as it was. The bed was super comfy and well needed after a day on the fells. We enjoyed the fact that there are many accessible walks from the cottage without taking the car but equally for a short car ride many more became accessible. The highlight for this sweet cottage is the private garden with those views....that is one special view! A warm welcome from Kathryn who was there if needed.

Gable End has a fabulous location with views across the lake to Coniston and the mountains beyond.

The property is an ideal getaway for two people: the bathroom and kitchen have been recently refurbished and the standard of decor and comfort are high throughout. Atkinson Ground is a very quiet, picturesque former farm with gardens leading you down to the lakeside. All with very friendly hosts.

'No microwave' was the message as we arrived, along with the news that it would not be replaced.

Water pressure and heat not brilliant and not enough for a satisfactory bath or to wash up in hot enough water. There was a night light that stayed on all night, right outside the bedroom window. I think the accommodation description should highlight that the lounge/dining was 1st floor which means that all good has to be carried upstairs - unless people are happy to eat at high bar stools in a small breakfasting space. Parking was adequate but quite narrow. Grounds are really beautiful! House was warm enough.

Beautiful secluded location and very suitable for these weird times.

Very relaxing and comfortable and great hopping off point for lots of places in the South Lakes but so quiet, felt remote but Coniston was just up the road. We managed to spot red squirrels on two of our trips, a delight as they are so shy and that made our day. We would highly recommend both the cottage and the glorious gardens with their fiery Japanese maples at this time of year. The autumn colours over the whole area were beautiful. Kathryn and her family made us feel really welcome.

The cottage is very cosy and the bed is incredibly comfortable. We were lucky with the weather and were able to complete all the walks we planned. It is a 2 mile approximately walk into Coniston, there are safe footpaths to follow all the way into the village. In fact we never used the car once whilst we were there as our long walks filled our days. Very lovely cottage set in beautiful gardens with a view from your living room over Coniston water a great calming way to watch the sun come up as start your day. I am sure we will return one day.

The location was even better than we expected.

In particular the is a lovely sitting area in the garden which we hadn’t expected.

Bathroom sink cracked and the oven was dirty And drier did not work.

The furniture and Bed mattress were warn and had seen better days. The rest was satisFactory. The location was great and The family friendly and welcoming. Overall we had a good break but would think twice before booking accommodation again.

Fabulous location

Beautiful little cottage up on the hill overlooking the north end of Coniston Water, perfect for two people.

The owners live on site in separate buildings and are extremely friendly and helpful. Comfortable, clean and well decorated, but the star is always going to be the stunning views.

I think some of the facilities need updating, such as a larger tv, better Wi-fi throughout the house and not just available on the landing, constant hot water and a better heating system.

The directions to the property are travel out of Coniston on B5285 towards Hawkshead.

After one mile turn right at top of lake then after half a mile turn left and the property is on your left. Prior to commencing my journey I contacted the owner to be told that there was no sign when to turn right and no sign when to turn left. Anyone travelling to the property take B5825 out of Coniston towards Hawkshead.After a mile turn right at large sign for "Monk Coniston Car Park" After half a mile turn left signed clearly Hawkshead. Property some four hundred metres on the left. Excellent property. Very clean.

Gable End was cosy, comfortable and provided everything we could have needed.

It’s set in beautiful surroundings and in a convenient location. The owner was friendly and helpful and I would highly recommend Gable End for a relaxing break.

This little cottage was a fabulous experience and well presented.

The cottage was well equipped And facilities as listed in the advert including the jacuzzi bath which was great. The grounds which the cottage is located are worth a look around for a little stroll. The only one niggle was water dripping from leaky gutter onto the velux roof reported back in Aug 19 which is definitely like Chinese water torture for first 2 days. Luckily weather improved but it really needs sorting. Else it was fab week with short distance from Coniston lake. Thank you!

Gable End is in an amazing location with a great view of Lake Coniston from the garden.

The cottage was very comfortable. We didn’t get to see the owner however her father was very obliging. The Bluebird Cafe next to the Lake is a must, lovely food and very friendly staff. We had a really relaxing week in the cottage.

Gable End cottage is in the most stunning location looking over fantastic gardens down to Coniston Lake.

It is perfect for two people with a spacious bedroom and lounge. The bed was as good as ours at home and as frequent travellers we have never said this before!! The cottage was warm and cosy and after busy days out walking etc it was great to come back to.

Lovely, comfortable cottage in great location.

Friendly welcome from the owners father on arrival. Only slight niggle is as another reviewer has commented the Wi-fi....it’s not that it’s limited bandwidth that was the issue, it’s that you have to sit at the top of the stairs to even pick up the hub! We only wanted to be able to check weather etc but it would have been nice to do this from the comfort of the lounge! Most of the pubs in Coniston provided free Wi-fi so not a major issue.

The cottage was perfect for two, very well equipped and nicely decorated.

The bed was extremely comfortable - a delight after a day of walking! Best of all, the view over Coniston lake and the Old Man of Coniston and the owner’s gardens are gorgeous and the secluded location a dream. There is also a private outdoor area with incredible views where we relaxed with a drink. Conscious others have noted the lack on Internet but the amazing location beats internet access (and in any case it works enough to check emails or do some quick research at the top of the stairs). Also very helpful to have off road parking. Location is very good, very near Coniston Lake and easy driving access to the best areas in the Lakes. Overall really exceeded my expectations and hope to visit again.

Gable End is a lovely little cottage with great views and is ideally situated to get to where ever you want to spend the day

water pressure at the property is very low.

As a result the bath takes about 15 minutes to fill so we didn't bother. There is a leak on the gutter of the property next door which means there is a constant drip onto the skylight above the staircase (when its raining, which is almost all the time) its loud and a bit like Chinese water torture. 2nd staircase after the turn tread needs attention. I think its loose as it makes a horrid bang when you tread on it. A few teabags/coffee and a small bottle of milk would be a great thing for the owners to provide for new arrivals. Cost is minimal and the nearest shop involves a drive to Coniston

WiFi is virtually non-existent, router is in another cottage.

No telephone signal on Three or O2. Ideal if you want to be left alone but not if you need to be in contact. Location of the cottage is terrific, easy walking into Coniston, Hawkshead and Grizedale Forest. Could have happily stayed another week or two

The property was in exactly the right place for our needs as we were going to a wedding at Brantwood.

It was well appointed but the kitchen was a bit small so we were unable to dine there. The bedroom windows could be fitted with venetian blinds as we had to have the curtains closed for privacy.

Gable End is a gem of a find!

! Such a beautiful setting too. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The cottage we thought would be tiny but it was quite spacious. The bedroom was large and the bed was so comfy we struggled to get up!! The kitchen was very user friendly and well equipped. The jacuzzi bath was awesome!! The upstairs living room was very cozy with fabulous views and the dining area was lovely. An ideal spot to explore the area. We will definitely return to stay here.

Lovely location and surrounding area.

Beautiful view from the garden/sitting out area. Everywhere accessible by car - we think it may have been a long walk into Coniston itself and we weren't sure how to get there so we only drove in. We had three lovely cruises on the lakes but particularly enjoyed the "Gondola" on Coniston Water, we drove through the three passes including Kirkstone and Wrynose, visited "Hill Top" the former home of Beatrix Potter (go early, it is timed admittance and gets very busy!), the Lakeland Motor Museum, Hawkshead (very pretty pedestrianised village) and enjoyed some lovely walks (Esthwaite Water and Tarn Hows). Also can thoroughly recommend the "Bluebird Café" (beautifully clean and the cakes are awesome) overlooking Coniston Water and the supermarket "Booths" in Windermere, lots of choice and fresh produce. All in all a lovely, relaxing holiday with a comfortable cottage to come home to each day. A vacuum cleaner at the property would have been handy as we had muddy shoes some days!

We were blessed with wonderful weather during the week and so made use of the outside space. The views from the garden down to Coniston water were superb! So quiet and peaceful, great for that glass of wine! A few negative's, no bowl in the kitchen for making a salad, and only 1 bathroom hand towel, plus a little short on any cleaning materials. Other than that we very much enjoyed our stay.

We found it to be beautifully furnished, comfortable and the garden with our own sitting area overlooking Coniston water was stunning!! The owners were particularly kind and helpful! We hope to return one day.

We had the most amazing week at Gable End.

We were so impressed with beautiful cosy cottage we will definitely be visiting again. The grounds and scenery are breathtaking. The owners were extremely helpful when we had to cut our holiday short by one day as the heavy snow and adverse weather made it difficult to get our car down onto the main roads. He actually drove our car down for us!!! Something we were not familiar with due to the bad snow and ice. We were so grateful and after a ten hour journey (which should have only taken 6 1/2 hours) we finally made it safely home. Now that is what we call first class service.

It was our 50th wedding Anniversary and the cottage was beautiful the owners were so lovely and left us a gift and card for our anniversary which we did not expect it was such a lovely surprise they could not do enough for us the cottage and the views were unbelievable we have never seen anything like it before it's the first time ever that we have been to the Lake District and we are definitely going back next year hopefully to the same cottage we are so pleased we picked Gable End we recommend it to anyone who wants a romantic and special place to visit and stall it's the best one we have ever stayed in
