It was clean and cosy but we were still enticed out by the local scenery and surrounding villages. Walking up the Old Man of Coniston and gingerbread at Grasmere were two highlights.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our one-week stay at The Gables.”

The cottage is situated in extremely quiet surroundings and offers beautiful views. We pushed the dining table (normally in a darker corner) in front of the window and enjoyed the views even more! Every room is tastefully furnished and decorated and after long hiking trips it was easy to relax in the very comfortable armchairs and the cosy bed. Contact with Kathryn, the owner, was easy and even her father gave us valuable pieces of advice for further explorations. We highly recommend!

Fantastic location and beautiful gardens. Great walk to Coniston from the property through the grounds. Would have preferred a different layout. Carrying food from kitchen to dining area upstairs could be difficult. WiFi does not work which we found a real issue. Advertised as having WiFi? If you need WiFi, not the property for you. Owners request consideration when using water heater as costs are increasing.

“Gable end is an amazing place to stay thank you for Hosting us.”

A comfortable holiday house can make or break your holiday. We live in Australia so our accommodation is much different from what how they are run here. I’m glad we took milk tea & coffee with us this was suggested by Sykes & it was very helpful, it’s intense driving hours on the M6 to then have to find a shop to buy a few basics. Thank you for that information.

“The property was clean, cosy and the rooms a good size; the kitchen was equipped with what we needed (only one request to the owner to add some normal sized water glasses).”

There were thoughtful touches throughout. We found the mattress uncomfortable but flipping it the right way round and popping pillows under the topper helped a lot. The tiled floors need a bit of attention, I didn't like walking around in bare feet. The house is a little way out from Coniston and has no phone signal; it was a real chance to disconnect which we wanted. The wifi worked well. We went as a couple but I would have felt safe and comfortable staying there alone too.

It was lovely to meet you. I wish you had called at our house across the drive and mentioned the water temp…could have asked our plumber to investigate. We have the same water source and sanitary ware as the cottage and didn’t have any discolouration. I’m not sure what you mean by water heaters? Property Owner

“Decor was nice.”

Kitchen very cramped. TV was useless. Storage heating could not be adjusted - the controls could not be accessed. Water was an odd colour - we were assured that it has been tested and was safe. No wardrobe in the bedroom, although there is space for a small one. Sofa and arm chair uncomfortable. Great view from the gardens. The general area is very attractive. Lots of local walks.

“A few negatives about The property that prospective guests should be alerted to: 1.”

The bedroom is overlooked and not at all private (unless the curtains are closed). 2. No microwave, limited crockery (esp glasses) and no basics available (not even a teabag). 3. Not able to control temperature in property (radiators fixed) and was way too hot. 4. Constant annoying dripping from gutter onto skylight 5. Loose part on bath which kept coming off (spa filter) and hurt your fingers if you weren't careful. 6. Very cramped in kitchen and not practical carrying meals upstairs. 7. One of the most expensive cottages we've stayed in (in view of the size) and weve stayed in lots! Definitely rates one of our least favourite. 8. One plus - the bed was comfortable.

Dear Mrs Davies I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Gable End, or let me know about the gutter dripping and the bath, during your stay. I could have attended to both of these. Although I can't find the part on the bath you refer to? The photos and inventory on the web page are very detailed in order to inform potential guests of what to expect (ground flour bedroom in a hamlet, storage heaters/wood burner) and what not to expect (microwave and large kitchen). “The cottage was perfect in every way, clean well equipped and very quaint.”

However the garden was quite something else. It was the closest one could get to staying at an award winning National Trust estate. Atkinson Ground is without doubt the most beautiful grounds I have ever had the pleasure to stay in. The view from the site is breath taking and we even had a birds eye view of a Royal visit with the Duchess of Cambridge landing in a Royal Helicopter in a pasture just below our cottage. We both loved our stay and felt extremely sad to leave this little paradise above Coniston lake. Definitely going back next time I visit the Lakes.

“On arrival the first thing that strikes you is the amazing view.”

The elevation gives you that enviable position. Gable end is a delightful and relaxing cosy cottage and for us had everything we needed, possibly a microwave but we managed quite happily as it was. The bed was super comfy and well needed after a day on the fells. We enjoyed the fact that there are many accessible walks from the cottage without taking the car but equally for a short car ride many more became accessible. The highlight for this sweet cottage is the private garden with those views....that is one special view! A warm welcome from Kathryn who was there if needed.

The property is an ideal getaway for two people: the bathroom and kitchen have been recently refurbished and the standard of decor and comfort are high throughout. Atkinson Ground is a very quiet, picturesque former farm with gardens leading you down to the lakeside. All with very friendly hosts.

“'No microwave' was the message as we arrived, along with the news that it would not be replaced.”

Water pressure and heat not brilliant and not enough for a satisfactory bath or to wash up in hot enough water. There was a night light that stayed on all night, right outside the bedroom window. I think the accommodation description should highlight that the lounge/dining was 1st floor which means that all good has to be carried upstairs - unless people are happy to eat at high bar stools in a small breakfasting space. Parking was adequate but quite narrow. Grounds are really beautiful! House was warm enough.

Thank you for your comments. The note apologised and explained that the departing guest that morning, had informed me that the microwave (turntable) had broken. I left a bottle of Lakes Damson Gin to say how sorry I was for the inconvenience. The website clearly explains that the kitchen has a breakfast bar and stools and in the pictures you can see that the dining table is in the sitting room. Property Owner

“Beautiful secluded location and very suitable for these weird times.”

Very relaxing and comfortable and great hopping off point for lots of places in the South Lakes but so quiet, felt remote but Coniston was just up the road. We managed to spot red squirrels on two of our trips, a delight as they are so shy and that made our day. We would highly recommend both the cottage and the glorious gardens with their fiery Japanese maples at this time of year. The autumn colours over the whole area were beautiful. The cottage is very cosy and the bed is incredibly comfortable. We were lucky with the weather and were able to complete all the walks we planned. It is a 2 mile approximately walk into Coniston, there are safe footpaths to follow all the way into the village. In fact we never used the car once whilst we were there as our long walks filled our days. Very lovely cottage set in beautiful gardens with a view from your living room over Coniston water a great calming way to watch the sun come up as start your day. I am sure we will return one day.

“The directions to the property are travel out of Coniston on B5285 towards Hawkshead.”

After one mile turn right at top of lake then after half a mile turn left and the property is on your left. Prior to commencing my journey I contacted the owner to be told that there was no sign when to turn right and no sign when to turn left. Anyone travelling to the property take B5825 out of Coniston towards Hawkshead.After a mile turn right at large sign for "Monk Coniston Car Park" After half a mile turn left signed clearly Hawkshead. Property some four hundred metres on the left. Excellent property. Very clean.

“This little cottage was a fabulous experience and well presented.”

The cottage was well equipped And facilities as listed in the advert including the jacuzzi bath which was great. The grounds which the cottage is located are worth a look around for a little stroll. The only one niggle was water dripping from leaky gutter onto the velux roof reported back in Aug 19 which is definitely like Chinese water torture for first 2 days. Luckily weather improved but it really needs sorting. Else it was fab week with short distance from Coniston lake. Thank you!

Friendly welcome from the owners father on arrival. Only slight niggle is as another reviewer has commented the Wi-fi....it’s not that it’s limited bandwidth that was the issue, it’s that you have to sit at the top of the stairs to even pick up the hub! We only wanted to be able to check weather etc but it would have been nice to do this from the comfort of the lounge! Most of the pubs in Coniston provided free Wi-fi so not a major issue.

The bed was extremely comfortable - a delight after a day of walking! Best of all, the view over Coniston lake and the Old Man of Coniston and the owner’s gardens are gorgeous and the secluded location a dream. There is also a private outdoor area with incredible views where we relaxed with a drink. Conscious others have noted the lack on Internet but the amazing location beats internet access (and in any case it works enough to check emails or do some quick research at the top of the stairs). Also very helpful to have off road parking. Location is very good, very near Coniston Lake and easy driving access to the best areas in the Lakes. Overall really exceeded my expectations and hope to visit again.

“Water pressure at the property is very low.”

As a result the bath takes about 15 minutes to fill so we didn't bother. There is a leak on the gutter of the property next door which means there is a constant drip onto the skylight above the staircase (when its raining, which is almost all the time) its loud and a bit like Chinese water torture. 2nd staircase after the turn tread needs attention. I think its loose as it makes a horrid bang when you tread on it. A few teabags/coffee and a small bottle of milk would be a great thing for the owners to provide for new arrivals. Cost is minimal and the nearest shop involves a drive to Coniston

Thank you for your booking. Because the bath is a Jacuzzi, the water has to cover the jets. Some of the jets are set quite high in the bath and so it does take time to fill the bath completely. You could have just had a 'normal' bath though so wouldn't have needed to fill the bath as full which would have been quicker? No sorry, we don't supply provisions as its self catering. It was well appointed but the kitchen was a bit small so we were unable to dine there. The bedroom windows could be fitted with venetian blinds as we had to have the curtains closed for privacy.

! Such a beautiful setting too. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The cottage we thought would be tiny but it was quite spacious. The bedroom was large and the bed was so comfy we struggled to get up!! The kitchen was very user friendly and well equipped. The jacuzzi bath was awesome!! The upstairs living room was very cozy with fabulous views and the dining area was lovely. An ideal spot to explore the area. We will definitely return to stay here.

“Lovely location and surrounding area.”

Beautiful view from the garden/sitting out area. Everywhere accessible by car - we think it may have been a long walk into Coniston itself and we weren't sure how to get there so we only drove in. We had three lovely cruises on the lakes but particularly enjoyed the "Gondola" on Coniston Water, we drove through the three passes including Kirkstone and Wrynose, visited "Hill Top" the former home of Beatrix Potter (go early, it is timed admittance and gets very busy!), the Lakeland Motor Museum, Hawkshead (very pretty pedestrianised village) and enjoyed some lovely walks (Esthwaite Water and Tarn Hows). Also can thoroughly recommend the "Bluebird Café" (beautifully clean and the cakes are awesome) overlooking Coniston Water and the supermarket "Booths" in Windermere, lots of choice and fresh produce. All in all a lovely, relaxing holiday with a comfortable cottage to come home to each day. A vacuum cleaner at the property would have been handy as we had muddy shoes some days!

“A lovely cottage in a beautiful location.”

We were blessed with wonderful weather during the week and so made use of the outside space. The views from the garden down to Coniston water were superb! So quiet and peaceful, great for that glass of wine! A few negative's, no bowl in the kitchen for making a salad, and only 1 bathroom hand towel, plus a little short on any cleaning materials. Other than that we very much enjoyed our stay.

“We had the most amazing week at Gable End.”

We were so impressed with beautiful cosy cottage we will definitely be visiting again. The grounds and scenery are breathtaking. The owners were extremely helpful when we had to cut our holiday short by one day as the heavy snow and adverse weather made it difficult to get our car down onto the main roads. He actually drove our car down for us!!! Something we were not familiar with due to the bad snow and ice. We were so grateful and after a ten hour journey (which should have only taken 6 1/2 hours) we finally made it safely home. Now that is what we call first class service.

It was our 50th wedding Anniversary and the cottage was beautiful the owners were so lovely and left us a gift and card for our anniversary which we did not expect it was such a lovely surprise they could not do enough for us the cottage and the views were unbelievable we have never seen anything like it before it's the first time ever that we have been to the Lake District and we are definitely going back next year hopefully to the same cottage we are so pleased we picked Gable End we recommend it to anyone who wants a romantic and special place to visit and stall it's the best one we have ever stayed in

There's excitement and energy for the both parties.

Also within driving distance is White Platts Recreation Ground, it has the best mini-golf course in the lakes, with a putting green, crazy golf, tennis courts and an infant play area.

Hawkshead 4 miles; Ambleside 8 miles.

Nestling at the head of Coniston Water, the pretty village of Coniston is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District National Park, making it a superb base for touring, with Hawkshead, Ambleside, Windermere and Grasmere just a short drive away. Superb walking, mountain biking and climbing are available locally on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam, and the lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. For watersports enthusiasts, the quiet lake is ideal for dinghy sailing and canoeing, whilst the less active can enjoy a leisure cruise on the beautiful steam yacht 'Gondola’, or visit Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin. Nearby attractions include the award-winning village of Hawkshead, home of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country and Esthwaite Water, famous for its fishing.
