“Beautiful location, in the country and not far from the main towns.”

Cottage is very clean and has a wonderful little wood next door for doggy walks. The accommodation is set around a courtyard shared with other holiday rentals so it doesn’t have its own enclosed garden. The building is finished to a high standard with a beautiful fitted kitchen and new furniture throughout but despite this, the appliances are fairly basic and there is no dishwasher. We suggest replacing the iron, pans, baking trays, and wok as they have all seen better days. It was great having two very nice en-suite shower rooms but beds were a big disappointment. Hard mattresses, rock solid pillows and duvets which are barely wide enough for two people. I see from other reviews that this issue has been raised before so it definitely needs attention. A good quality mattress topper, fluffier pillows and a better duvet would make the sleeping arrangements much more comfortable. And it would be great to have a Smart TV in the lounge instead of just Freeview. Other little touches which would make a big difference include a welcome tray with some complimentary items like tea/coffee/toiletries, etc, some milk in the fridge and the house being warm on arrival. With these improvements it really would be a luxury cottage. The location is very convenient for exploring the South Lake District and all in all we had a great holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback following your recent stay at Abbots Reading Cottage. We are glad to hear you had a great stay and loved the peaceful location. We appreciate your detailed comments and take these all on board as we are continuously trying to reach and surpass guests' expectations. Back when the properties were set up a discussion was made on whether to add a dishwasher but due to space and costs, we decided against this. We will inspect the utensils and equipment however we recently had a Visit England inspection to which all was graded 4* but understand wear and tear does occur in a highly used accommodation. Again the bedding and mattresses were all rated high but we will ensure to check on this. Regarding adding Smart TV's we will be sure to consider this as we do understand that this is more sought after now. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

A few steps leads up to the stunning living room, also with vaulted ceiling and old oak beams, this is a space to spread out in and relax. On this level is the third bathroom facility complete with designer free-standing bath, perfect for long soaks after a day on the fells. A staircase leads down to the two chic bedrooms one of which has a 5'0" wide bed which can be separated into two (2'6") single beds (ideal for children) should you require - so please say when booking - thank you. Each bedroom with glazed door to the courtyard and each with en-suite power shower room. The owner has recently built a 'Woodland Walk Dog Pen' for your furry friends to use whilst at the property and is fully enclosed and 100sqm. There is also use of an outdoor 'dog paw shower ' to clean off muddy paws after days on the fells. Location In over two acres of grounds surrounded by blissful scenery you could easily describe the setting here as secluded, yet only a few miles and you are at the very southern tip of Lake Windermere, close to the small hamlet of Lakeside and another wonderfully peaceful setting with both the Lakeside and Swan Hotels serving tempting distractions together with superb leisure club facilities. Lush green countryside, scattered with pretty tarns and embracing all the elegance of the lake and river shores surround this wonderful area. There are many public footpaths from the door including to the White Hart pub in Bouth and the the Motor Museum/Cafe Ambio at Backbarrow. Windermere Lake Cruises depart regularly from Lakeside Pier, ferrying passengers the full length of the lake with stops at Bowness and Ambleside - two popular Lake District holiday destinations that you'll love to explore during your stay. Each has a wide range of shops and attractions, so why not do your shopping trip by boat? Lakeside is home to two fantastic Lake District attractions; the freshwater Lakes Aquarium and one end of the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway from where you can take a short trip on a traditional steam train. Historic sites such as Scott Park Bobbin Mill, Sizergh Castle, Levens Hall and Holker Hall & Gardens are all within easy reach by car, with no need to navigate through busy tourist areas. To your north west, you'll approach the landscapes that famously inspired the children's author Beatrix Potter via peaceful country lanes. Her former home can be visited at Hill Top, in the small village of Near Sawrey. Only a mile or so further, and you'll reach the enchanting village of Hawkshead - a wonderful place to while away a day, exploring quaint cobbled streets and a blissfully car-free village centre.

About the location

Newby Bridge 1.2 miles; Bowness-on-Windermere 8.7 miles.

Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.
