Swallow's Nest

A fantastic property that is well presented and looked after.

The bedrooms and chairs were comfortable. The property is situated up a steep hill, which can be difficult for those with mobility issues. and is a short walk from the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere and the garden gives a great view of the surrounding area. I would highly recommend this property and I am planning our next trip to the Lakes.

Third time at the nest, next year already booked!

Tidy cottage, smashing wee garden at the back, has all the facilities you require in the cottage Town pub and restaurants only 5 minutes away, 10 minutes coming back, last 100 feet of the hill very acute but it will keep you fit!

We had a lovely 5 days at the cottage , it was perfect for us , would definately stay again thank you.

This is my 6th stay in Swallows Nest cottage .

I have been coming here since 2024. It’s a real home from home. Far away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness its ideal for Walkers being just yards away from the start of The Dales Way and just up the hill from buses that can take you all over the Lake District for walks further afield . The Windermere ferry is near too and we often travel as foot passengers over the lake and then walk to Wray Castle and onwards to Ambleside. The drying facilities in the cottage are excellent and everything gets dry over night . The little garden is a haven to sit in after a hard days walk and the views from the main bedroom are terrific of Windermere . Looking forward to my visit next May

Perfect size cottage for the three of us, looks exactly the same as photographed on the listing with a secure garden for our dog and parking.

Views of Windermere Lake from the main bedroom window was amazing to wake up to. We would book again!

The cottage was perfect, very clean and cosy with everything we needed for our stay.

The location was really good, only a short walk to the lake and and town with all local facilities available within easy reach.

There was a well stocked kitchen , very comfortable bed and lovely views . Ceratinly keeps you fit walking up and down the hill to Bowness .

We just want to start by saying we have been coming to Swallows Nest Cottage for 10 years.

We love it here so my partner decided to suprise me for Christmas. On arrival we saw that there was not one piece of Christmas decoration in sight.! I understand that you deal with alot of properties but seeing as this was a Christmas break and had paid nearly double what we would normally pay we found this to be very disappointing. We did ring Sykes and the lady was lovely but we were told this would have been stated in the email confirmation but it was not.! We would have brought our own with us if this was the case, but had to then go out and buy some adding more expense. If you are not going to decorate for Christmas you need to make your customers aware.!! We were told someone would ring us back but we are still waiting for that call unfortunately & it’s now the 8th January, we arrived on the 23rd December.!!! I really do not like to complain but when something annoys you, you then pick up on other things that are wrong. The right hand hob on cooker didn’t work. Found chocolate bars half eaten under the coffee table in front room. Bathroom extractor fan didn’t work and bathroom latch/door faulty. The kitchen tap was constantly dripping. Normally bin bags/ foil etc in draw but nothing. Only 2 saucepans which the handles were very loose. I understand it’s a self catering cottage but do feel that little things like bin bags/foil etc wouldn’t go a miss. Always found these before in cupboards. I just feel that coming to the lakes at Christmas should be a magical time and I just think paying what we did had nothing extra than in October but paid a lot more for it.! It’s such a shame as we were really looking forward to it for a year only to fall a bit flat. We did have a lovely Christmas as went out and brought bits to make it festive but little extras would have made it. I just feel little things need to be looked at for future guests especially paying more for the festive break.!!!. We will be back but not at Christmas unfortunately. Like I said at the beginning we love it here but just wanted a little extra care.

I had been looking for a dog friendly stay in the Lakes for some time and one that was affordable as so many are not.

The cottage was as described and yes the location is up a very steep hill but this was not a problem as the views made up for it. The cottage is comfortable but the decor is a little tired and could do with some modernisation and some home comforts as it is a little sparsely decorated! It’s also a shame that the fire is electric and not real that would be fantastic! The garden was ok for the dogs although extremely slippy and a slip risk. The window cleaner also left the twin gates open so be aware that you need to check they are secure if you have dogs. The garden could also benefit from an outdoor sensor light as it is so dark at night I needed my lantern to take the dogs out! Apart from the comments above I have booked this cottage again purely on affordability but would like to see some improvements to the condition a decor.

Quiet and good location. Would definitely recommend it . The hill is abit steep but ok for us.

We have had a lovely week stay in Swallows nest.

The position of the cottage was perfect for us, and we enjoyed several walks up to the top of Brant Fell. The cottage was very cosy and had lovely views. We will likely stay here again! - a few notes for the owner just that the kitchen tap has a constant drip which they may want to see to, the clothes airer is broken, some of the metal prongs are detached and also I would suggest maybe a few more teaspoons in the drawer.

Just returned from our 4 day break at Swallows Nest - everything was perfect nicely located in walking distance to Bowness ( nice hill!

Great location for the Dales Way and boats on the lake! The garden was so nice and it was lovely to see the lake from the bedroom! We had the best week!

The cottage is clean and in a great location it is very nice.

The only problem was next door had builders and garden maintenance going on most of the week. We were not able to lie in on holiday. We could not sit outside because of the noise. Plus workers were constantly walking through the garden leaving both gates open and we have a dog . So this spoiled our stay only break from building noise when we went out .

This is a late review for our stay at Swallow's Nest in May 2025.

We have stayed here numerous times as the cottage suits our needs in terms of size & location, however we did find a handful of niggles during our stay this year. We arrived to find there were no basic hygiene products, i.e. no hand soap in either the kitchen or bathroom, no kitchen towel for mop ups and no kitchen/bathroom surface spray (we have found these provided before on arrival prior to this visit). We also found the bed pillows to be very 'lumpy', though appreciate this may just be a personal issue, the throw on the sofa had seen better days with holes in it and the bathroom towels felt very rough on the skin. Also, not an issue for us, but there was only one pint glass in the kitchen cupboard....toss a coin who gets it in a cottage advertised for 3 people! Maybe small niggles but we didn't have these on our earlier visits so were noticeable to us. Do hope these small things can be rectified to boost the cottage back up again, as otherwise we do enjoy staying here.

. nice place away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness.. only a 5in walk into Bowness.. maybe a 12 min walk back up hill but take slow small steps it can be done

Our first time staying here and what a beautiful cottage set in such a brilliant place.

Beautifully decorated, Kitchen has everything stocked to use, modern bathroom with great water pressure from shower, great views from the garden and bedroom, really well thought out with board games and DVDs etc, Cleanliness was overall good a few cobwebs around and the kettle could do with being descaled so I didn’t have a cuppa whilst there, please check right side socket behind door in main bedroom it wasnt for allowing me to plug in a charger? Excellent walks close by especially Brant Fell for a sunrise view, a variety of pubs close by, and walk to the lake is under 10 minutes. Even better the cottage is dog friendly with an enclosed garden too with spare bowls provided. Those whose mobility isn’t the best and prefer flat or less inclined walks may struggle with the hill getting up and down to the cottage. All in all if we were to visit again we would consider the cottage to stay in again we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

This is the 4th time I have stayed at Swallows Nest a wonderful cosy cottage in a great setting far away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness village.

Excellent little cottage minutes away from the heart of Bowness.

Spacious, comfortable and warm, it offered everything we needed. We would definitely return! My only small piece of constructive feedback (not negative) would be if we had something to be able to shovel grit from the nearby grit box for the hill as it was rather icy and slippy during our stay - again this would have been a nice to have as I know this is weather dependent and probably would not be needed for most and it certainly did not spoil our our stay.

Lovely cosy property in a great location.

Enjoyed our stay with our 9 month old and we were grateful for the provision of a high chair/travel cot. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking. Cleanliness was to a good standard. There is a third floor in the property closed off and used for owners storage. It would have been nice to have access to this. The second bedroom was a little too snug for the travel cot which ended up wedged between the wall and the bed (seeing as we did not want baby in with us or down in the lounge). Little touches like a bottle of milk for the fridge on arrival would have also been gratefully received after a long journey. All in all would recommend to others looking for a comfortable family holiday.

We have just returned from a relaxing week at Swallows Nest.

The cottage was very comfortable and cosy. It was in a prime position near to the facilities of shops, pubs and restaurants albeit down a steep hill. The dog enjoyed her morning walks up in the field near the cottage. Could really recommend The Royal Oak Inn at the bottom of the hill. We ate there on 3 occasions as it served good home cooked food which was reasonably priced. We definitely would recommend staying here.

We have stayed at Swallows Nest about 6 or 7 times and no doubt we will visit again, it’s a lovely cottage in the perfect location.

My feedback is that it needs some additional cleaning to be rid of cobwebs which spoil an otherwise great holiday experience.

Well equipped and very clean. Sofa and bed comfortable, nice big fridge freezer. Lovely garden and parking is a bonus.

It was comfortable and had all the amenities anyone needs. Unfortunately, for me, I was on my own as my wife has Alzheimer’s and has gone into care. Your cottage was a haven when I returned from busy days. It has helped me clear my mind. I don’t think I’ve ever slept so well. Just a shame that the weather limited the time I could use the garden, but I did get a couple of evenings when it was dry and warm enough to sit outside with a glass of wine. I thoroughly recommend the property. John

We regularly stay at Swallow's Nest and once again, were very happy with our stay there in May.

It was lovely to see the welcoming hanging basket near the door again and a new rug in the lounge. The only things we would comment on are the shower fitment over the bath needs tightening as it was quite loose on the wall (we did report this and were assured the owners would be made aware of the same) and the extractor fan in the bathroom would benefit from a clean. For hygiene purposes, it would be a nice touch if handsoap in the bathroom could be supplied on arrival. On a cosmetic note, the back garden seemed to feel a bit too enclosed this year.... cutting back some of the shrubs would help to open it up more and likewise, the large tree seen from the main bedroom window is quite high and obscures the view somewhat. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & have re-booked for next year. Many Thanks.

Bath water could do with being hotter,but not a major concern It was our third visit to the house and we have already booked it again for next year.

We had lovely stay would definitely recommend to friends. The only thing I would recommend is that you let customers know that people may walk through the back garden. We had workmen walking through which was a shock plus with us having a dog he could have been outside. Thank you

A lovely cosy and well equipped cottage.

It was very wet weather over Christmas week but the rack & the pegs in the kitchen enabled me to dry everything out over night. I have been here the last week in May when it was warm enough to sit in the lovely little secluded garden & to eat our evening meal & our breakfast too come to think of it! My friend Helen has booked it for the two of us for a week next May. Although Bowness is a busy little town Swallows Nest is in a very peaceful situation the pathway to the end of the Dales Way is just outside the gate which for long walks or short walks is just fabulous !

House was clean and tidy on arrival.

Have noticed on last few rentals..be nice if tea/coffee be supplied..nice location and reasonable back garden view..parking for car or 2is good….less than 5mins walk into town..but depending how fit you are 10mins back up hill..ideally situated for bars/restaurants and Lake.. Would stay again and recommend this place.. Cheers T

Beautifully presented cottage.

Great location. Clean. Very comfy beds. Could not fault it. Only complaint is that we had to buy hand soap for the bathroom as bottle left practically empty.

Just came back from a lovely week at Swallow’s nest and it was a really lovely cottage in a very quiet area of Bowness.

Great private parking too which is a bonus in the Lakes! The cottage has all the facilities you need and was very clean on arrival too. It is only a 5 minute walk down to Bowness and about 25 minute walk up to Windermere. The cottage also had a garden with patio area to enjoy the late summer sun. It was so good, we have booked to go back next year.

The cottage was very clean and just noticed dust on the bathroom blinds.

Appreciated the change of sofa and overall good quality feel of the accommodation. We thoroughly enjoyed our sixth year holidaying in the cottage!

The property was absolutely lovely, very well kept and furnished and a perfect size for the two of us and our teenage son.

We would love to come back again in the future.

We are regulars to this property and once again we enjoyed our stay.

We did notice the new sofa, which was a lot more comfortable than the previous one and the hanging basket outside the front door was also a lovely touch. The only suggestion we would like to make is for the bathroom towels to be upgraded, as the ones provided this time were not particularly soft on the skin. Likewise, the kitchen tea towels provided were beyond their best. Regardless, we have re-booked for next year and look forward to visiting again.

The cottage was very well presented and comfortable.

The outside space was nice as it was very hot whilst we were staying. We found the hill a little challenging, that that was primarily because of the heat - that doesn't happen very often! The Dales Way and other footpaths started very close the the cottage. We would def recommend the property for its comfort and attention to detail.

Lovely place ,not everyone would like the hill up from Bowness but it did make it lovely and quiet .

Lovely cottage which suits our needs well.

We really like having the outside space - even if we can’t always use it (weather!). Bed is very comfortable and bathroom is modern and well appointed. Kitchen pretty well equipped but really needs another two medium sized pots and a couple of small sharp knives. An updated TV would be a bonus. Area is very quiet so great for people who are poor sleepers. Parking is fine. Just a short walk to shops restaurants etc but the cottage is at the top of a very steep hill so not suitable for people with mobility issues unless they are happy to drive / use taxis to get in and out of Bowness centre. There are no kitchen basics or welcome pack provided so you need to make sure you have milk bread etc with you - shop before you access the cottage. We have stayed here before and would definitely stay here again.

This is our 2nd visit back to tge cottage it's ideally placed for walks straight out the front door or a 5 minute walk down to the town.

It's a great base to go out and see the other lakes and walks

We loved Swallows Nest and it was situated in a perfect place for visiting my daughter.

The only negative we could see was that there was no hand soap at all upstairs or down and we could not find any egg cups. Also a welcome pack with basics would be a lovely touch. We did appreciate the night lights that came on automatically. A sweet cottage!

We did leave a note for the owners as couldn,t find visitors book to comment.

Also couldn,t find instructions regarding bedding/towels so left all used in the bath & put a note on articles not used.However we did enjoy our stay despite the weather & found the cottage on the whole very nice & beautifully located.

This cottage was lovely.

It was literally a 4 minute walk to Lake Windermere. Brantfell was perfect for an early morning stroll. The most surprising thing was really how quiet it was. The perfect retreat after a day's hiking/shopping/eating!

Very quiet area, you’d never know you were so close to Bowness centre. Cottage very comfortable, well equipped with everything you need for your stay. Lovely little garden, just perfect for 2-3 people. Plenty of local walks, so no need to use the car if you don't want to. Cottage up quite a steep hill, but there is a easier walk up. Will be staying again.

Lovely cottage, however, it could have been cleaner!

Cobwebs on the stairs, tired looking furniture, worn carpets etc. No tongs to use in the kitchen. When moving the footstool it was obviously it hadn’t been hoovered underneath.

Huge fridge freezer and lovely outside area. All very clean! Fantastic location for the lake,walks and public transport. Car stayed parked all week. There was no key for the outside storage so we couldn’t get the seat cushions for outside chairs, mattress wasn’t the best and sofa cushions would slide off but would still highly recommend.

We have stayed at Swallow's Nest regularly for a while now and are still very happy with the facilities and location of the cottage (indeed we have booked yet again to stay next May).

However, on our visit this year we did notice a few blips from previous years. The cottage felt and looked a little tired. The frontage of the cottage wasn't as bright and welcoming as on previous visits; in need of the door re-painting and general weeds removing. We noticed scuff marks on the kitchen walls, again a lick of paint needed (and cobwebs on the ceiling). We found a cooking pan in the kitchen had an extremely loose handle which could pose a danger (we did report this to you and for which you thanked us for bringing it to your attention). We also found the toaster had not been emptied - the crumb trays beneath were full of someone else's breakfast toast! The rug in the lounge has been there since we first started visiting - a change to a new one possibly? We were very grateful to have towels provided at the cottage, however this year they were rather like sandpaper - new, softer ones if possible please? Overall, as a family we look forward to and enjoy staying at Swallow's Nest but feel it needs a little TLC just to make it shine again - thank you.

Great property in excellent location for exploring all the area has to offer.

The steep climb back up the hill is particularly good for walking off dinner in Bowness! Everything you could need was provided for, with the exception of an iron and ironing board, which would be a very useful addition. Very comfortable and would definitely stay again if ever in the area.

.the accommodation itself is clean..cosy..spacious modern..and had everything we needed for our week's holiday..ample parking for 2 cars and a great little garden that gets the sun with great views..lovely walk from the cottage up to Brant Fell too!! Could do with an iron and ironing board but apart from that it was amazing and would highly recommend this property.

Lovely long weekend in Bowness.

Great location for all local amenities. The cottage is lovely and cosy with nice views from both the front and back, however we were surprised and unimpressed at the lack of necessary commodities such as additional toilet rolls (there was only 1 between 3 people for 2 nights), dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and no recycling facilities or spare bin bags. Would’ve been nice to know that we needed to bring these items in advance but nevertheless, the shops in Bowness are only a 10 min walk down the hill. Overall a lovely weekend!

We where surprised in the information about the position of the cottage in that it was situated up a very steep hill and nothing was mentioned.

As the three of us are aged 72, 65, and 64 with two of us with walking problems. Otherwise the cottage was excellent, only one other thing missing was an iron and ironing board.

The swallows nest cottage was just lovely.

It as tastefully decorated and looked just like the photographs. It was extremely comfortable and clean. It had everything we needed and was a short walk into the centre of bowness. My friend and I had a very relaxing week and would highly recommend.

We really enjoyed our stay at Swallow’s Nest & would definitely recommend it to others, we are hoping to revisit next year.

The quintessential cosy cottage.

Just 5 minutes from the hub of the village. The village had a huge number of places to eat and drink. Be prepared for some rugged walks!

Roper try does not appear to have recycling facilities, only one bin, near properties have 2/3 bins and bottle boxes.

Drain may be blocked, floods when shower or empty bath.

Hard to fault this pretty cottage.

Being picky it would have been good to have an iron and ironing board. A small food welcome pack would be nice but understand in these times that may not be advisable. A pretty west facing garden that nice to sit in during the evening.

We thought Swallow’s Nest was wonderful. The beds were so comfy and we felt the cottage was very well equipped and the location fantastic.
