“This is a lovely cottage, with a stunning garden.”

The surrounding areas, although beautiful scenery, have little to offer if you want to eat out, visit local independent shops, get a takeaway (the only one was closed on the wednesday we visited, although website said it was open) or sit in nice coffee shops to watch the world go by - For those things you need to go to Ambleside, Keswick etc on the other side of the lakes. We spent most of our holiday in the car driving to the other side, more tourists, but much prettier with lots to do and ...

However, if you want peace and beautiful walks this cottage could be just right.

It has everything you need. It would definitely benefit to have more than one pillow per person. It would also be very useful to have hanging space in the king bedroom. The lounge is amazing with the multi fuel stove and amazing views. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we were able to have family down from Scotland to enjoy the house.”

Being able to walk from the house into the countryside was a bonus and also being on the quiet side of the Lakes was great. Would definitely go back in another season.

“My family, including my mum and dad, thoroughly enjoyed staying at the cottage over Christmas.”

It’s perfectly positioned to ensure calmness and privacy but then is also in close proximity to the beach, the fells, Muncaster castle, the Ratty and Irton Hall. This side of the Lakes is most definitely the hidden gem. The cottage itself was warm and cosy with a well equipped kitchen and a beautiful sun room where you can sit and drink your coffee in the morning watching the sun rise. The grounds wrap around the house and are perfect for the slower adventurer. For those wanting a longer trek, a quick stroll out of the front door and over the bridge, takes you further a field onto the well signed bridle paths. Our dog, Piper, loved all of her dogs. Throughout our booking, we had brilliant communication, not only with the agent but also the owner. They even kindly decorated the cottage for us with Christmas decorations. A very lovely touch! I would recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to stay in this part of the Lake District. We will definitely be back. Thank you, Zoe

“What a lovely cottage.”

A well equipped kitchen, gorgeous sun room, very comfortable beds, large bathroom and a handy room to store coats and boots downstairs. The garden, wow. It was perfect, with the wild areas to explore and views across the fields. It was so peaceful. Our only regret was it was just a bit out of season to sit outside for too long to appreciate it. We explored the vast beaches at Drigg, Seascale and St Bees. Spent some time at Wastwater, but mostly relaxed. This was our first visit to the western lakes and coast, always opting for the east, we are so pleased we did this and we will definitely return to Caldhu Cottage. Communication throughout from the owners was really good, they obviously care about their customers. We loved it. Thank you.

“Caldhu Cottage was a wonderful base for our fabulous fortnight break to The Lakes.”

The location was so private, and the garden like a mini nature reserve - areas of lawn, meadow, ponds and woodland adjoining the crystal clear river Irt (perfect for a cooling paddle). We loved watching all the insects buzzing and flitting around the meadow, while enjoying a morning coffee - even had a visit from a Golden-ringed Dragonfly. The garden is not fully secure for an excitable young Border Collie, so we did keep him on a long-lead, but no way spoiled our enjoyment. Not only were the western fells and lakes on the doorstep, but also the beautiful Drigg beach just down the road. The tides were kind to us for a few days of cool morning, and evening, dog walks on the vast expanse of exposed sand.

“Caldhu cottage What a beautiful cottage in a peaceful location.”

We really enjoyed our stay for new year. The property has been thoughtfully and lovingly restored to high standards, the beds are comfortable and goodnight sleeps where had by all . Everything you need is in the cottage. The wrap around garden and woodland are fantastic and our labrador Teddy loved it , surrounded by wildlife its a paradise, I love birdwatching and here was great for it , I brought food to put out and wasn't disappointed , managed to get some good photos,seeing the bullfinch in the trees near the conservatory every morning was great. You can definitely spend all your time here but we did venture to Drigg beach it was stunning, also Seascale and St Bees which are beautiful beaches. There is a Co-op in Seascale but the bigger stores are in Whitehaven which is only about 20 minutes away. Caldhu cottage is an absolute gem we would love to keep a secret but we will be telling everyone. Will definitely return.

“Caldhu Cottage is a lovely property which I can highly recommend to anyone wishing to explore the quieter parts of the Lake District.”

Its location is superb with the natural beauty of Wast Water and Eskdale only a few miles away. We were very lucky to have mainly dry and sunny weather which made walking and driving around so much more enjoyable. If you decide to stay here please feed the birds. There are a couple of feeders, one for sunflower seeds etc and the other for suets blocks. The little ones will reward you with lots of entertainment throughout the day.

“Fabulous cottage and very peaceful.”

Cottage has been renovated to a high standard. Garden is amazing and our dogs loved being able to go and explore. Lovely walks from the cottage and places to visit quite close by. Kitchen is well equipped with the majority of items you may need (please can you include a pizza cutter?) Dining room was perfect for breakfast and an evening meal (we were out most of the day which meant we had lunch elsewhere). We had a delivery for the week from Tesco and the driver advised it was very easy for him to find. Sunroom was lovely and warm - only concern, as we were visiting with a 12 month old, is that it isn’t safety glass in the door between the sunroom and dining room. Drying room and downstairs toilet always lovely and warm. Lounge area was comfortable (could possibly do with another chair for if there were 6 people staying). Great to have board games available. Internet was intermittent which meant you couldn’t always watch a film all the way through without buffering. Didn’t stop us watching what we wanted though. Dog gate at the bottom of the stairs was fantastic not just to stop the dogs but also the baby climbing the stairs. Bathroom was lovely and great for family use. Bedrooms - all lovely and clean. Could do with some mirrors in the bedrooms for drying hair etc. we didn’t use the twin bedded room but it looked lovely and comfortable. It was a little on the cool side in the bedrooms as the radiator thermostats were difficult to move. Loved the night lighting and will be investing in one for my landing at home. Owners were quick at answering questions and were lovely in corresponding with us. Would recommend for a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and will definitely visit again.

Thanks for raising your concern about the glass in the sun room for: I confess this is something I'd simply overlooked and will be endeavouring to get changed on my next visit to the cottage. Regarding the issue with the internet, I've been on to Vodafone about this: it transpires that there's a fault on our line and as a result we are only currently getting about 4Mb/s rather than the 67Mb/s we're paying for! “An amazing cottage in wonderful, quiet countryside.”

The property itself has been sympathetically renovated and provides a comfortable stay. Although it seems to be isolated it is close to a beach and a wonderful castle and tourist railway. A good base for a holiday in the Western Lakes. We highly recommend it.

“We can't recommend Caldhu Cottage enough.”

We had a lovely week despite freezing temperatures in this beautiful cottage. It ticked all the boxes for us. It is exquisitely furnished yet feels comfortable and homely. It was clean with well equipped kitchen and really lovely bathroom. There was plenty of tea, coffee etc in the welcome pack. Communication from the owners was excellent and we felt the owners really want you to have a lovely stay. We envy anyone booking for Soring and Summer because the garden is fabulous. We saw a deer at the end of the garden and being able to see the neighbouring sheep was a real bonus. Can't fault anything at all.

“Probably the best well equipped cottage we've ever stayed in.”

The location was so peaceful and private. Plenty of exercise for our dog just walking around the extensive garden and although just the two of us staying there was more than enough space for a family with three good sized bedrooms. Ideally located for the western lakes and beaches. For us personally, the only minor point was we found the lounge sofas very uncomfortable but everything else was perfect. Would definitely recommend.

“A stunning cottage set in a quiet rural location.”

We had an amazing time and can’t recommend Caldhu Cottage enough. Immaculate inside and out, with woodland walks on the doorstep and a huge garden to enjoy. A 10 minute drive will get you to the lovely beach at Drigg - perfect for your four legged friends. The owners were very helpful and approachable. Thank you, we had high expectations which were hugely exceeded!

“Needs Better sitting in the sunroom.”

No Seating outside in the front of the house. Doesn’t seem to be enough pots and pans for cooking to full occupied rooms. No egg cups. Lol
