Sedbergh 4.4 miles. Howgill Head is a charming detached holiday cottage set in the scenic countryside of Howgill near Sedbergh, Cumbria. With off-road parking for up to three vehicles, this family-friendly retreat is an excellent choice for families or groups of friends seeking a peaceful escape.
Step inside to a spacious kitchen/diner, fully equipped for all your culinary needs. It’s a great spot to gather around the table and enjoy home-cooked meals while sharing stories from your day. Just off the kitchen, the sitting room offers a comfortable space to relax in front of the Smart TV, with a woodburning stove adding warmth and atmosphere on cooler evenings.
When it’s time to rest, choose from three well-appointed bedrooms: a super-king-size, a double, and a twin—each offering a quiet place to recharge. The property also features a stylish shower room with a walk-in shower, basin, heated towel rail, and WC, along with everything you need to start the day refreshed.
Outside, the front garden and gravelled section with a picnic bench is ideal for alfresco dining or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings. You’ll also have access to 30 acres of land—perfect to stretch your legs.
For a change of scene, head to Tebay Services (Southbound) for a bite to eat and a spot of shopping. Discover Farfield Mill, a fascinating heritage site filled with local artists and craftspeople, or visit Cautley Spout, England’s highest waterfall. A short drive brings you to Kendal, known as the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’, where you can explore the historic Holy Trinity Church, browse the exhibits at Kendal Museum, or enjoy the collections at Abbot Hall Gallery.
After a day of adventure, returning to Howgill Head offers a welcome sense of calm—an ideal base for discovering the beauty of Cumbria at your own pace.

Wonderful cottage in a beautiful location.
Very comfortable, it was great to stay in a cottage that had very comfortable, good sized beds in all rooms! Very nice remote location and right in the foothills of the Howgills. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Owner was great to deal with too, excellent communication.
This cottage is next to the M6 and a railway line.
If you look at the map you will work this out, but it’s worth saying that you can hear noise outside of the property. Because of this, we didn’t use the outside space. On a 7 day stay, 1 day we had no electricity because there were preplanned works that the owner did not tell us about. No showers or breakfast for us that day. The house is well done, and was clean but we felt really let down on those two things. Minor things to keep in mind are that the kitchen has only small pans (ie not big enough to cook pasta for 4 people) and there is no electric toothbrush socket in the bathroom.
I am giving this feed back here as there does not seem to be any other route to use.
Once inside the property there were many small touches that were very pleasant like lots of big soft towels and comfy beds but there was no bedroom furniture for your clothes in any of the bedrooms. Why not? Not even a rail to hang your clothes - is this not a basic requirement? There was water around the toilet when we arrived - a leak maybe? and the tap on the bathroom sink was very loose. There were no instructions whatsoever apart from a post it note with the wi-fi code. We had no hot water for a day - we contacted the owner who, once he picked up his emails turned the water on remotely. We also had electricity problems which resulted in one and a half hours, at night, with no power. There was no torch, just one citronella candle. Tenants should be warned to take a torch with them. There were no instructions regarding rubbish - we found some bins that we used but they needed emptying. There was also no first aid kit - I would have thought that was necessary or maybe I'm wrong? The first thing I did when I arrived was sweep the floor! It felt as if the property wasn't quite ready to be let out. We won't be returning but it is a lovely area to holiday in.
