“The cottage was immaculately clean on arrival.”

In terms of accommodation - we loved the spacious open plan layout upstairs; the kitchen is really well equipped and all appliances are good quality. Both bathrooms are smart and clean. We loved the overall feel which is much more spacious than the photos are able to show. The woodburner could do with a quick bit of maintenance as the rope seal is becoming detached and one of the air intakes seems to be partially stuck, but this is a tiny thing overall. We would most definitely come back ...

The property

Highfold is set amid a cluster of character properties known to be among some of the most historic in Ambleside.

It has now been thoughtfully brought up to date and offers a delightful place to stay in an ideal location.

With the lake a gentle five minute stroll away you can enjoy lake cruises in all seasons or simply sit in the park by the water and admire the views.

Ambleside has good local shops for all your daily needs, a remarkable choice of restaurants, pubs and cafes as well as the ever popular Zeffirellis and Fellinis cinemas hosting the best films and periodic live streaming of opera and ballet.

With plenty of walks to keep even the most adventurous happy, local parks with tennis, bowls and mini-golf, plus numerous places to visit in the area you may never need to use the car after your arrival.

Accommodation: Steps under the covered porch access the mid-level of the cottage.

The main living area is on the upper floor reached up a short flight of stairs to a wide landing with seating area and a range of books and games.

Double doors open into the open plan beamed living/dining room (log burner, 43" Smart TV with sky basic channels, netflix, DVD, Bose bluetooth speaker and free wi-fi) with the well equipped fitted kitchen making an L-shape with the sitting area.

The whole space has a light and spacious feel with windows to three sides and pitched ceiling supported by cruck beams.

On the lower floor you will find two bedrooms - the master with king-sized bed is en-suite having shower, basin and wc.

Whilst the twin room is adjacent to the family bathroom (bath with shower over, basin and wc).

Furnishings throughout are in a contemporary cottage style and the property is cosy in all seasons with carpets to most rooms and gas central heating and hot water on demand.

Outside: Walled garden with raised patio reached up a few steps from a back door in the master bedroom.

A sheltered sitting out area faces west and will be a real sun-trap on warmer days.

Parking for one car in the drive.

There are walks from the door to Jenkins Crag and beyond over to Troutbeck - a favourite with many Lakeland visitors.

Five minutes walk brings you to Lake Windermere with its various pubs and cafes by the water.

A level walk into Ambleside centre takes about ten minutes.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
