4 Alpha Rise

We had a lovely stay at Alfa Rise.

Good location for getting around. The place was spotless. There was everything you needed to rustle up a meal. There is a breakfast bar in the kitchen we tended to eat outside on the patio as the weather was fabulous there is a table and chairs upstairs in the living area. The living room is bright and airy with patio doors which was great for keeping the place cool. Top floor had two bedrooms. The beds and bedding are so comfortable and the en suite with a powerful shower. Keith the owner brought us a clothes maiden so we could dry the towels. Nothing was too much trouble nice friendly man. Overall we would recommend Alfa Rise

We had a wonderful week at Alpha Rise helped by good weather although not the heatwave temperatures experienced further south.

The accomodation being over 3 floors meant legs got some training in even before walking the wall or other hilly routes. (It is clearly stated in the description it will not suit people with mobility issues.) Keith was a good host with suggestions of the best walks, village pub for good ale and places to visit. The house is well equipped - plenty of crockery, including large mugs, glasses and cutlery. Stripped pine dining table meant I was worried about leaving a mark on it but plenty of mats and coasters provided. Tea, coffee, biscuits and milk were there on arrival which was useful. A very pleasant stay and lots to do and explore. Carlisle is a surprisingly interesting city and the Cathedral is free to visit but with lots of excellent volunteer guides giving tours. Unusual nowadays!

I had a wonderful stay at Alpha Rise, it was an ideal base for visiting Hadrian’s Wall and many of the sites associated with it.

The house was very comfortable and had everything I needed. The Samson Inn (a couple of minute’s walk away) had good food & service and a friendly atmosphere. I would be more than happy to return to Alpha Rise again,

Right on the top of Hadrians wall. Stairs in the property could be a challenge. No issues

Property is in a lovely setting with lovely views and lots of opportunities for walks from the door.

10 mins in either direction to shopss in other towns. Set over 3 floors it is well equipped for self catering and washing clothes. Owners were friendly and helpful.

Lovely property has everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Good base for Roman forts and Hadrians wall. Outdoor pool at Haltwhistle was good and close by. The food at the Sampson Inn was delicious and catered for gluten intolerance the chef was very helpful. Would visit the property again.

Easy access to Birdoswald (walking distance) and Housteads (short drive) not far into Hexham, Corbridge and Carlisle.

This property is well equipped and tastefully decorated.

Over three floors the stairs can at times be challenging but good exercise! Everything we needed was here and the location was perfect for our trips out to Hadrian's Wall, Vindolandia, the Roman Army museum etc. Access was easy, and I imagine in the summer it would be a perfect spot to sit on the patio table and admire the view.

Although not the conventional holiday cottage in type and layout it has everything you would want and is nicely styled, with beautiful views from all the windows.

2 bathrooms offer both ground floor facilities as well as one en suite on the top floor. A Smart TV with basic Sky package and Sport is a bonus too in the first floor lounge, with patio doors to enjoy the fresh air and countryside views. Both a Washer/Dryer and a dishwasher are provided so all the utilities are covered. Maybe a few hooks on the back of doors or some towel rails would be a handy addition. Right on the border of Cumbria and Northumberland Gilsland is a perfect central location for reaching all the best places. With Hadrians Wall right in the heart of the village there are walks straight from the door. And all the best attractions of the wall including Sycamore Gap, Housesteads and Haltwistle are only a short drive away. The Lakes are about an hour away or go east towards Kielder and beyond. A visit to Hexham and Corbridge can be recommended. The local Community Pub The Samson which is only minutes along the road offers good food from Wed-Sun. And there’s a tea room on the green. Further afield for eating out, to the west there’s the village of Brampton, and to the east is the Twice Brewed Inn. We had a comfortable stay in very warm surroundings and had an excellent week exploring. The only slight issue would be the attached neighbours occasionally heard through thin walls. Overall a very good value convenient holiday home with very friendly and helpful owners who are easy to contact.

Alpha Rise is a beautiful property with great views.

The owners provide a good range of amenities for ease during your stay. A good local pub, very close to Hadrian's Wall, vindolanda, good transport links, easy driving distance to Hexham, Haltwhistle or Brampton. The area hosts a wealth of historic places to visit. A highly recommended home for anyone looking to explore the Northumberland and Cumbria border.

Beautifully clean and very well equipped.

With a usable kitchen, so can eat in if need be. Perfect for visiting Northumberlands attractions, especially Hadrians Wall and the Kielder Forest. Great places to eat close by were the Greenland Hotel and the Milecastle Inn.

Milk in the fridge and other basic items, including biscuits left for us. Stairs challenging, especially in the night! A coffee table in the lounge would have been helpful. Great base to finish walking Hadrian's wall path.

A fabulous week in a beautiful and historic area!

Alpha Rise is clean,comfortable and stylish with everything we needed for a lovely holiday. We loved the flowers and shrubs in the planters outside and the views with the sheep (sad to see a few limping though). Our only point would be some rails to hang the wet towels on would be very useful. We certainly got our exercise by climbing the stairs everyday, which was a good training as we walked several miles of 'Hadrians Wall' throughout the week, wanting also to pay our respects at Sycamore Gap, so awful and sad to see this iconic tree gone, but so pleased to see new life bursting from around the base of the trunk. 'A bonus was the 'Wall' running through the village with it's Milecastle, so from the doorstep we walked to Birdoswald Fort one way and Thirlwall Castle the other, also a walk to the Stepping Stones is recommended. Lanercost Priory, Hexham Abbey, The Devil's Porridge War Museum, Solway Aviation Museum, The Sill Discovery Centre, as well as the Fort's along the wall were fabulous and interesting places to visit. A fantastic week, walking and exploring. Thank you.

We had a great week at Alpha Rise.

It may not look terribly picturesque on the outside, but it’s a very well furnished and equipped house with a lovely view across sheep-filled fields in a superb location virtually on Hadrian’s Wall. It’s a bit quirky in terms of layout over three floors, but just means a few more stairs to climb than usual. It’s difficult to convey in the photos, and the front of the property is quite private and there is just a quiet lane beneath which doubles as a cycling route. Susan and Keith also kindly allowed us to store our bikes in their garage and were very responsive and helpful with the odd queries we had. The only minor things I’d say is it would be great if they could make sure their contact details are on the key collection email from Sykes (standard practice) and would be good to have somewhere to hang towels in bedrooms. And another comfy chair in sitting room would be good, though sofa was fine for the two of us. Beds also very comfortable.

A beautiful cottage, very tastefully decorated and supplied with everything needed.

It sits in a lovely location with far reaching views and within easy drives or walks to local attractions. I am happy to recommend it with no hesitation.

Perfect getaway for a winter trip up north. As a family, we’ve stayed in many holiday homes and this one was my favourite.

My son and I had a very good week at 4 Alpha Rise, Gilsland.

The house was near perfect, the only disadvantage was the three floors and necessary steps to get around the very nice property. It may not be suitable for people with a disability, but, apart from that, everything (including lovely Christmas decorations) was excellent. For those interested in Hadrians Wall the house is almost on the line of the wall! There are also other ancient places of interest nearby. We would have no hesitation in recommending 4, Alpha Rise and would gladly return in summer!

What a delightful surprise on opening the front door a warm beautifully furnished house awaited us after a long journey.

Keith was on hand to greet us and settle us in , from the fully equipped kitchen lounge/ dining room / bedroom every thing was perfect. The views were amazing and there is so many wonderful places to visit. Hexham and Corbridge were our favourites where we met up with relatives and heard we had become great grandparents. Parking good I cannot fault this treasure of a find and would throughly recommend it , even on a wet dark day it was peaceful and warm . Thank you for letting us share your home .

Lovely property in an ideal location for walking sections of the wall or other local areas.

Quiet and comfortable with ample parking. Village a short walk down the hill,with cafe and pub, plus Birdsoswald fort just a 2 mile stroll following the wall. Might be an idea to take games with you, but there is a book swap at the bus stop in the village. No shops near, so you will need to have provisions with you if not eating out.

I used this property as a base for walking my final leg of the Hadrian's Wall Path from Newtown near Brampton to it’s conclusion at Wallsend.

The property is located in a rural position adjacent to the Wall. It has easy access to the A69 and B6318. The property was clean, comfortable and good value for money.

I don't usually write reviews but I thought the 4 Alpha Rise deserved some praise.

I stayed here a week and was totally relaxed and comfortable the whole time. Susan and Keith are brilliant hosts attentive and friendIy. Alpha Rise was very well equiped with modern decor and had everything I needed for my stay. I found the king-sized bed very comfortable and the ensuite bathroom handy. The electric shower in the ensuite bathroom was excellent, hot and powerful. But if you like a long soak there's a bath on the ground floor. The property is more like a town house (3 floors) and features great views of the beautiful countryside. Where you can watch sheep in the fields or the farmer haymaking. The views across the rolling farmland are inspiring and lift the spirit. There are 2 flights of stairs to negotiate, but even though I am elderly and have a replacement knee joint I managed the stairs without problem. The Sony smart TV worked well and has Sky so I used iPlayer to catch up on program's I like. Broadband in the property was good with reasonable speeds. However phone signal on 3 network was absent but by using the WiFi and WiFi Calling I was able to make phone calls and send/receive texts. I made use of the thoughtfully provided tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and milk. All super clean and nothing seemed too much trouble to ask of these excellent hosts. I would happily stay here again and highly recommend it.

The property was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. It was well situated giving us quick and easy access to all of the surrounding tourist destinations. Would highly recommend.

Instructions to find key were great!

Inside was absolutely STUNNING!!!! FANTASTIC!!!!! AMAZING!!!! Spotlessly clean, nice and warm, beautiful soft Towels of which there were many, beds soooo comfortable - was like staying in a 5 star hotel!!!! Owners were absolutely LOVELY - nothing too much trouble, soooo accommodating!!!! Brought extra Towels as we liked it sooooo much we stayed two weeks! Outside you have loads of room to sit out and enjoy the STUNNING view across the fields full of Wildflowers, and a huge 8 seater table/bench with huge parasol, so you can just enjoy relaxing, and also enjoy the tranquillity of listening to the wild birds and the odd train that goes past across the fields! In the distance are STUNNING views into the hills and mountains beyond! I have stayed in a few places, but hand on heart we both agreed it really is THE BEST one have EVER stayed in!!!!! Oh almost forgot - plenty of hot water with huge bath downstairs with its own toilet and handbasin, and upstairs a luxurious en-suite Shower - so two or more people can get ready at the same time! And I must also point out - the kitchen is just AMAZING - cupboards full of every item you would need to even cook a Christmas dinner - again the BEST equipped kitchen ever!

Spotlessly clean, everything has been thought of so that you have a great stay. Perhaps could benefit from instructions for oven and more prominent signage, other than that perfect

We really enjoyed our stay, we were there for work and the place was in a great location for us.

It looks way nicer in real life than the photos, with a nice view across a valley with the tiny two carriage train nipping by during the day. It is well stocked with everything you need, including a dishwasher which was great for us!
