    “Eel House Cottage is a lovely place to stay – light, airy and spacious, with a really welcoming feel from the moment we arrived.”

    We were greeted with a thoughtful welcome hamper containing tea bags, beer, biscuits and ground coffee, which was a fantastic touch. Each bathroom was also stocked with Pure Lakes handwash, which smelt gorgeous and added a bit of luxury to the stay. We had been slightly concerned about the road after reading previous reviews, but in all honesty we didn’t find it particularly busy or noisy, so that wasn’t an issue for us at all. There were, however, a few maintenance niggles that ...

    We were greeted with a thoughtful welcome hamper containing tea bags, beer, biscuits and ground coffee, which was a fantastic touch. Each bathroom was also stocked with Pure Lakes handwash, which smelt gorgeous and added a bit of luxury to the stay. We had been slightly concerned about the road after reading previous reviews, but in all honesty we didn’t find it particularly busy or noisy, so that wasn’t an issue for us at all. There were, however, a few maintenance niggles that stopped this being a full five-star stay. One of the bathroom towels had an obvious hole in it, and when we first used the oven we discovered a baking tray left inside with two cooked sausages on it. The main gate latch was broken, so we had to use rocks to keep the gate shut and secure for our dog. The kitchen scissors were unusable, the outside light wasn’t working (likely just needing a new bulb), there were no spare bags for the food waste caddy (but spare bin liners were provided), and the en-suite sink drained very slowly. Despite those issues, we had a great time overall and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. With a few small fixes, this would easily be a five-star property. We certainly wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Eel House Cottage is a beautiful detached cottage nestled on the Graythwaite Estate near Bowness-on-Windermere, Lake District.

Home to both a double with an en-suite shower and a twin, this property can sleep up to four guests.

The first floor is complete with a family bathroom, whilst the ground floor boasts a kitchen, utility, dining room and a sitting room with a woodburning stove.

Outside there is an enclosed gravelled garden to the side with outdoor furniture and secured bike storage, as well as off-road parking for two cars to the front.

Eel House Cottage is a wonderful base from which to enjoy a memorable stay in the Lake District.

About the location

HAWKSHEAD

Ambleside 5.1 miles; Kendal 17.4 miles.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

The swimming pool can be booked for 45 minute private sessions,all guests can pre-book up to a maximum of 3 swimming slots ( or 2 slots for short stays 2 and 3 nights ) 7 days prior to arrival by contacting estate@graythwaite.com
