“We stayed at lovely shipwreck cottage recently and our stay was wonderful.”

The place was cosy and clean. Owners were nice to give us a call and talk through what places to visit and how to get to the cottage beforehand. There is a beach about 10 minutes walk from the cottage and can travel to other lake district towns/villages from the location. Overall cottage is quite good value for money and ideal if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

The property

Set in the charming village of Haverigg in south-west Cumbria is Shipwreck Cottage, a lovely semi-detached cottage, ideal for a couple, small family or group of four wanting to enjoy the coast and the Lake District National Park, both of which are in easy reach of the cottage. Access to the cottage is found via a shared path with the neighbour, although Shipwreck Cottage has the added benefit of an external gate to the street at the rear, and roadside parking is available at the front of the property. Step inside the property to discover a homely, carpeted lounge with a sofa and armchairs to relax into while enjoying your favourite show in the Freeview TV as the woodburning stove fills the room with warmth. Continue into the dining room, which offers seating for the group to enjoy home-cooked meals together, with a gas fire heating the space and adding a homely feel. The kitchen is fully-equipped with all of the appliances you could need to create delicious meals, and the back door provides access into the rear courtyard-style garden. There is sun room with seating, providing a quiet space to enjoy reading a good book, while the handy shower room completes the ground floor layout. Upstairs, you will find two spacious bedrooms; a twin that can be made into a super-king-size by pushing the beds together, plus a double bedroom, able to cater to a variety of groups, both served by the family bathroom with bath. The second floor is accessed via a small metal staircase and offers an attic conversion that makes for a wonderful study area or a playroom for the children to while away the hours. Outside, the courtyard garden is an ideal place to sit out with a morning coffee or to enjoy an alfresco lunch, while the shed provide storage spaces for bikes. The cottage is well-placed in the centre of the village, meaning a variety of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants are available within short walking distance, as well as a playground by the coast, a lovely Blue Flag awarded sandy beach and Hodbarrow Haverigg Lighthouse, built on the Hodbarrow Outer Barrier sea wall in the mid-20th century. The nearby town of Millom offers a further selection of shops and cafés, as well as a discovery centre, Hodbarrow RSPB Reserve on the Duddon Estuary, a protected area important for birds and other wildlife, and the Millom Ironworks Local Nature Reserve. Head into the Lake District National Park to enjoy walking and cycling opportunities through forest, rolling ocuntryside and around picturesque lakes; climb Black Combe, Whitfell and The Old Man of Coniston, visit Swinside Stone Circle, see the magnificent owls at the World Owl Trust, explore the National Trust's Hill Top, which is the former home of Beatrix Potter, hop on a boat to enjoy Coniston Water and Windermere, or take part in a watersport activity. Shipwreck Cottage offers plenty to see and do for an enjoyable Cumbrian holiday.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
