“Had a wonderful stay at Pickle Barn, with a lovely cake waiting for us when we arrived.”

The cottage had everything we needed plus lots of info on places to visit and things to do and WOW, the views were breathtaking and the location ideal for exploring the local area, we enjoyed days out at Morecambe, Windermere, Levens Hall, Ribblehead viaduct and Whitescar caves, so all in all a great place to stay, with great hosts and plenty to do, would happily book again !

“What can I say?”

My wife and I booked Pickle Barn for 3 nights and, having travelled from Northern Ireland, we couldn't have asked for more! Hosts, Steve and Mike were very welcoming, are two warm and kind people and it was an absolute pleasure to meet them both. Pickle Barn? Fabulous! The location was perfect (Excellent views from the accommodation), the accommodation itself was perfect, clean, cosy and all of the amenities you need for a stay. Recommend Pickle Barn to anyone and we wouldn't change a thing. We WILL be back! Thank you Mike and Steve for making our stay such a joy

“An excellent property.”

It was prepared to a high standard, very clean and cosy. It was obvious the amount of care and preparation that had gone on prior to our visit. The kitchen had every item available for preparing meals. Our hosts made us most welcome to ensure that we had everything we needed. Although it was the winter season the property was very warm with loads of hot water for showering. An excellent dishwasher was available and WiFi was good. Underfloor heating on the ground floor was much appreciated. Overall an excellent stay and I would thoroughly recommend this property. Thank you to our hosts for a comfortable stay.

The Hosts are fabulous, really friendly and welcoming and make you feel like you've known them for years! The Barn is a beautiful building inside and out and the location is dreamy. You can just sit and relax and soak in the views. All the facilities were great. The cooker was in absolute pristine condition! Location was also fab for a walk to the nearby crags (a bit of a quick uphill but well worth the views) and lovely Kirkby Lonsdale, Ingleton and Country Harvest just along the road. Thank you for the lovely lemon drizzle cake! We look forward to returning one day.

“Our family of 4 (2 adults, one teenager and a 11 year old) stayed in February for a week at Pickle Barn and cannot recommend it highly enough.”

Firstly, the location is incredibly peaceful, quiet and feels like you've truly gotten away from everything which helps massively in relaxing and enjoying a proper holiday. However, you're only 20-30 minutes drive from both Kendal and Lancaster with everything you might need in terms of shopping for supplies. It is easy to get into the Lake District with Windermere around 30 minutes drive, and about an hour to get further north to Keswick or Grasmere. The coast at Arnside is only about 20 minutes as well so plenty of options! The property is cosy and wonderfully equipped (particularly enjoyed having a kitchen stocked with good quality cookware as we tend to cook for ourselves most of the time when we are away), the flipped bedrooms are a nice touch for being able to enjoy the view with a cup of tea in the morning as the sun rises, and the open plan means you can all still chat and hang out while making food. Our hosts were welcoming, friendly and made themselves readily available in case of any issues (of which we had none!) and we are definitely considering a return visit in future - potentially in warmer weather so we can take advantage of the garden and use the barbeque!

Great location well equipped wanted for nothing. Comfortable and clean. Visited lots of places a good base for the lakes and the dales. Loved Kirkby Lonsdale and Devils bridge with the river Lune. The Waterfalls at Ingelsden well worth a visit. As is the Country Harvest farm shop there. Ate out at The highwayman, Pheasant and the Plough good food would recommend these for a visit.

“The place was wonderful, the location was great with the Dales on one side and the Lakes on the other and beautiful walks from the door.”

The accommodation was excellent, the best we have stayed in (and we've stayed in quite a few !), well equipped, very clean, with beautiful views and in such a tranquil spot. The icing on the cake was the delightful owners who were so welcoming and informative but never intrusive, when we left we felt as if we were saying goodbye to friends. We've never stayed at the same place twice but I think this will be the exception to the rule.

“We had a great time at Pickle Barn, Steve the proprietor was there upon our arrival to explain the general running of the place.”

Pickle Barn is a gem of a barn conversion open plan upstairs with the bedrooms below. It is perfectly equipped and very warm and comfortable and very clean. It is placed about 10 mins drive from the town of Kirkby Lonsdale. The scenery around is fantastic we took full advantage of the inclement weather to do an extensive tour of the Dales and found super pubs in very small villages for great lunches and even a train trip on the fantastic Settle to Carlisle line. All in all, we had a great time at Pickle Barn.

The house is very nicely set-up, clean and welcoming and the location is extraordinary. The view from the kitchen french doors was a heart stoppingly beautiful panorama of fields and stone walls, there were sheep and cows grazing on the green grass and it was wonderfully rural but not isolated. The very nice owners are right on site and the pretty town of Kirkby Lonsdale is an easy drive with an excellent grocery store and a charming high street. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Quiet with great views. The upside down configuration was ideal for the roasting temperatures at the beginning of the week. The bedroom stayed a very comfortable temperature. Some great walks from and close to the property. The approach roads made driving interesting on occasions testing my reversing skills a few times.

“From my experience of holiday cottages over decades, I can honestly say that this one has to be one of the best for comfort.”

I walked extensively every day, all but once from the door and this kept me going especially on two occasions during the week when the weather turned very wet, knowing the cottage would be warm with plentiful hot water for a recuperative bath or shower on my return. There are wonderful views from the upstairs living accommodation, the open plan arrangement creating a really spacious feel.The owners are so welcoming and friendly, from the onset I felt at home and at ease. “The property is very well maintained and comfortably appointed.”

The 'upside down' arrangement (bedrooms downstairs) provides a fine outlook from the lounge and kitchen. The location offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside but the approach to the property from the main roads is along a series of very narrow, winding lanes with high hedges affording poor visibility. It's a slow process. There's not much the owners can do about that but, be aware!

The only difficulty we had was in the booking process, where one payment was made to owners direct (a 'commission' payment I believe) and another to Sykes. This caused some confusion and necessitated a phone call to Sykes. This part could have been made clearer at the booking stage to prevent confusion and extra time/admin on both our side and Sykes'! Overall, a wonderful, relaxing holiday in a cosy, very well equipped cottage.

It is within easy reach of the A65 and extremely close to the border with both Lancashire and the Yorkshire Dales, so day trips to both plus of course the Lake District are an absolute must. The barn itself is really well equipped and comfortable, with very helpful owners. The tea and cakes on arrival were very welcome. A wonderful property!

“One of the best, if not the best, property of Sykes Cottages we have stayed in and we have stayed in many great places over the years.”

I can't fault it in any way. The owner was welcoming and left essential goodies which were much appreciated. If you want a holiday where you can swtich-off, this is the place for you. In the middle of the rolling countryside it is a great place to recharge your batteries. However, there are lots of interesting places to visit within the vicinity so you can have the best of both worlds.

The surrounding landscape is beautiful, peaceful and so quiet! Our host was charming and very welcoming, laying on tea and cakes ready for our arrival. The barn itself is fabulous, the conversion is quite new so all the facilities offered are in great condition with breathtaking views of sweeping countryside from the upstairs living area balconies. It was lovely just to sit with a pot of tea and watch the weather roll by and the birds come and go in the six acres of grounds. Perfect! Also plenty to do within twenty minute's drive in the nearby Yorkshire Dales and there's a good quality supermarket ten minutes away.

Perfectly positioned to enjoy some of the finest limestone scenery in the country, this reverse-storey holiday let makes for a lovely base for a family of four's getaway.

Two off-road parking spaces greet you on arrival, so you can unpack, settle in and get your break started with ease!

Continue inside and upstairs to uncover the open-plan living space, where exposed beams give the space a charming touch, and Juliet balconies offer stunning views over the surrounding countryside and garden.

Make your way over to the to the well-equipped kitchen, where all you need to create culinary delights can be discovered, alongside a handy washing machine and dishwasher!

When dinner is ready, tuck into it at the dining table and take in those elevated views from the French doors; alternatively, take your meal outside to enjoy it amongst your peaceful surroundings of the grounds.

After dinner, head to the sitting area, where sumptuous seating entices you to unwind as you enjoy a family-favourite DVD or play a board game together.

Hutton Roof, with its variety of annual fairs and activities is within easy reach, whilst Hutton Roof Crags Nature Reserve is nearby providing some of the best examples of limestone paving in Britain. KIRKBY LONSDALE

Kendal 9 miles.

An attractive market town, Kirkby Lonsdale is situated in the heart of the Lune Valley, midway between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and holds a 13th century Market Charter. Nowadays, Thursday is market day, a perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the variety of distinctive independent shops in the town, or the many 17th and 18th century buildings which still stand. The town was also a finalist for the High Street of the Year Award in 2016. This part of the Lune Valley was a favourite haunt of the artist Turner, and was made famous by Ruskin – his "view" of the valley is still spectacular. The medieval Devil’s Bridge spans the river, and the quiet country lanes are ideal for exploring by car, bike, or even horse. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, fishing and a variety of riverside and country walks, making the area an ideal location for a break, whatever time of year. When voting Kirkby Lonsdale as the ‘Best Place to Live in The North West’ in 2019, The Sunday Times commented it is “An unbeatable Lake District location, bags of community spirit and one of the cleanest high streets in the country".
