“Small cosy cottage in good location.”

Second bedroom needs a black out blind or curtains (it is far to bright to sleep in with just the thin roller blind that’s up) and the living room chairs aren’t very comfy. We also had an issue with parking when someone from the next door hotel parked over our driveway so we had to start parking on the road to ensure we could get out in a morning. On a positive though, the location of the cottage was handy to tick off some of the western fells and the double bed was comfy so we slept ...

On a positive though, the location of the cottage was handy to tick off some of the western fells and the double bed was comfy so we slept well. Also, the Fox and Hounds is a brilliant local pub which serves great food and beer so we’d highly recommend a visit.

The property

Resting in the heart of the pint-sized hamlet of Ennerdale Bridge, on the edge of the picturesque landscape of the Lake District National Park, is this delightful white-washed cottage, Herdwick Heaf. Set across two levels and comfortably sleeping up to three guests, Herdwick Heaf makes a wonderful choice for a family escape to the countryside. Park up on your private driveway nestled alongside this lovely dwelling and make your way through the rear patio and over the threshold into a small entrance hall, providing handy storage space to kick off your shoes and hang your walking gear. Make use of the cloakroom to freshen up following an action-packed day before stepping through to the open-plan kitchen/diner, thoughtfully laid-out with white cupboards topped with wooden surfaces; a lovely pairing of contemporary and traditional décor. Make use of the range of modern amenities provided to rustle up a heartwarming meal for your group before gathering together at the snug dining table to indulge in your culinary delights. Carry the conversation outdoors and soak in the last of the evening sun in the peaceful setting of the patio, and recount the days adventures over a crisp glass of wine. As the evening draws to a close, climb the stairs to the first floor where you'll find two well-presented bedrooms, a double and an intimate single room, each decorated with a light and airy interior and providing a calming ambiance to rest your head. In the morning, prepare for a new day in the family bathroom, where you can indulge in a hot soak in the bath, or make use of the overhead shower for a quick rinse. Take a break from doing the cooking and cross the neighbouring stone-built bridge into the heart of Ennerdale Bridge to grab a bite to eat at the nearby pub, the Fox and Hounds Inn, where you can indulge in delicious homecooked goods served alongside a pint of locally sourced ale. As the first stop on the famous Wainwright's Coast to Coast trail, you're in an outdoor adventurers paradise; lace up your walking boots and embark on a two-footed adventure through the rugged countryside, taking you as far as the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay, or tackle the varying terrain by bike. For a more leisurely stroll, head to the nearby lake of Ennerdale Water, idyllically settled in a remote part of Cumbria and offering a secluded spot to enjoy an escape from reality; the perfect setting for a picnic amongst the tranquil scenery of the surrounding fells. The port town of Whitehaven is within easy touring distance, where you can immerse yourself in the local history and interactive exhibitions at The Beacon Museum, tour the The Rum Story, a fascinating recreation of an 18th century Caribbean island, or watch the world go by as you savour fresh fish and chips alongside the peaceful marina. With all of this and more, make unforgettable memories with a stay at Herdwick Heaf.

About the location

ENNERDALE

Whitehaven 8 miles; Keswick 22 miles.

The tiny village of Ennerdale rests among the rolling hills and small farms of pretty Cumbrian countryside, on the edge of the Lake District National Park, just a few miles from the coast. The River Ehen runs through the village, with a stone bridge dividing Ennerdale into two halves. On the northern side are the village school and a pub, whilst the southern side is home to the parish church and a second pub. There are lovely footpaths trailing through the surrounding countryside, across fields and fells of the wild Ennerdale Valley and there are great opportunities for mountain biking, walking and horse riding. This area is rich in flora and fauna and there is also an outdoor pursuits centre at the top of the valley, available if you book in advance. Ambleside, Keswick and Windermere are all easily reached, whilst the many beautiful lakes of this stunning location can also be enjoyed.
