Swallow Cottage

A lovely wee cottage with a decent garden.

Perfectly suited our needs of a summer holiday break away from Edinburgh whilst we let out our own house for the Festival. Small and compact but does exactly what it says on the tin. Well presented and tidy.

We had a lovely stay overall and found the accommodation to be clean, comfortable and in a peaceful location.

It was around a 30-minute walk to the local shops, and with a car it was well situated for exploring the surrounding area, making it a great base for our holiday. There were just two disappointments. We specifically chose this property because it advertised a hot tub, but unfortunately it was inaccessible due to overgrown nettles and appeared not to have been used for some time. We feel it shouldn't be advertised as a feature unless it is maintained and available for guests. The other issue was the number of flies. There were a huge amount throughout our stay—we used two cans of fly spray and had hundreds of dead flies by the end of the week. Despite these issues, we enjoyed our stay and, with these points addressed, it is be an excellent place to stay.

We had a lovely week at the cottage.

While it was small (which of course we knew in advance), it was very well arranged and our family of four (all adults) plus 2 large dogs fitted in with no problem. We particularly appreciated the large windows which gave the cottage a light, airy feel and the French windows we could throw open from our bedroom, plus the very secure and large back garden for the dogs. We had a great week walking the Wall.

Superb location for exploring the area around Carlisle, with easy access to local town of Brampton for shops, services, pubs and restaurants.

Very peaceful farm in beautiful countryside with good dog walks in local woodland.

We absolutely loved our stay here.

The accommodation had everything we needed and the sunset from the huge garden was amazing. We also loved the log burner and hot tub. The owner was on hand whenever we needed to ask anything but left us alone to enjoy our stay. For the money we paid, this was an absolute bargain break and we would highly recommend

Fantastic location and everything we needed, living area very comfortable all appliances worked perfectly and outside area for our dog's was safe secure and plentiful

Lovely lady owner.

The place was well located, peaceful and quiet. There was everything required for a good long stay. It was clean and tidy with a large secure garden for our dog. On the minus side it requires some TLC and some DIY, it's getting very tired. I

POSITIVES: Good location and layout of cottage, large enclosed garden, comfy beds, lovely bedding, constant hot water, efficient radiators.

As previous reviewers have said, the cottage does need updating (eg, the broken blinds waft when it’s windy, the previously mentioned hole in ceiling) but that did not spoil it for us. NEGATIVES; The horrible lingering smell (?drains, urine, damp) from both toilets. [I did private message the owner about this, but she has not replied.]

Place needs a good cleaning maybe a lick of paint.

There were cobwebs all over an a big gapping hole in the roof of the sitting room a bird actually got in one morning, The kettle is leaking badly it’s just an accident waiting to happen! on the plus side the bed was nice and comfortable and the garden was great for the dogs

Cottage nice and warm, a few bulbs out of light fittings , beds really comfortable, showers need updating very slow water pressure, all just needs a bit of TLC .

Lovely cottage really enjoyed our stay it was so cosy and warm , the garden was a good size if you take a dog and it's all well enclosed in .

It had everything you need to stay to make your stay enjoyable, the toaster needs replacing though you have to stand and hold the button down and when you are trying to do breakfasts for a family it's not ideal , for the price of a new one it's a little thing that just needs replacing. Overall a lovely little quiet , tranquil place and the owners are lovely

We stayed for 5 nights in October with our 2 adult children.

The cottage was very well set out with plenty of space for us all. The wifi worked well. The kitchen was well set up with plenty of storage space and a fridge-freezer big enough for a week's shop. Lots of power points and really good heaters for a cosy stay. Also, the log fire was lovely and the owner provided plenty of logs for our stay. Private patio area and garden which was useful. Just a few minor maintenance issues that didn't interfere with our enjoyment. Overall, a very quiet and peaceful stay. Highly recommended.

Fab holiday cottage.

Gorgeous airy space and we loved opening the patio doors, having a cuppa and listening to the animals every morning while laying in bed. The cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable stay with the added bonus of a lovely garden and outdoor table to enjoy the outdoors on the warmer evenings. Owners were friendly and helpful. We loved our holiday here and look forward to coming back!

Their where 4 of us staying, we all thought it was a lovely setting but unfortunately we all thought the cottage was very dated and in need of some attention.

The fridge was definitely in need of replacement as you couldn’t even put milk in the door as the holding bar was missing, the shower in the en-suite wasn’t working and a phone call to the help number on our second day of a week’s stay resulted in no action taken and therefore, we all had to share the one shower for our full stay, which wasn’t ideal.

We have just spent 4 nights at swift cottages had a fantastic holiday cottage lovely and clean, beds very comfy and a fabulous big enclosed garden for our dog.

We had everything we needed, the owner is lovely we should have been staying in Swallow but there had been a problem with the water tank so we were accommodated in swift cottage which is identical but slightly larger. Thank you for a great time.

We had a lovely stay for 5 nights at Swallow Cottage for a family break with our dog.

The very clean and comfortable cottage is in a great location for exploring Cumbria and Northumberland. The owner was great at responding when we had a small issue and sorted everything straight away. We would definitely stay here again.

A lovely warm cottage, very peaceful courtyard setting.

Even though it is on a working farm we were never disturbed by noise. The cottage was very clean with everything in full working order. A lovely large private garden for our dog to enjoy. The owners are lovely people, always willing to stop for a chat. Would definitely recommend this property.

Lovely cottage very comfy and warm.

Lovely views nice and peaceful. Large enclosed lawned garden which the dogs loved. Would definitely recommend this accommodation.

Facilities were very minimal.

The microwave didn’t heat anything up, the toaster didn’t toast properly. The shower was terrible and cold most of the time, the grill didn’t grill properly. The plug in the bath wasn’t sufficient so we were unable to properly bath the children. 2 of us came home covered in bed bug bites!

People were wonderful and accommodation great.

It was Christmas break and you pay more for this. I was disappointed with the Christmas tree. It was less than a foot plastic and shabby. Also first time no welcome pack ( milk tea bread) only small but means a lot. I take my own but I didn't have tea bags. The lady was lovely and gave us some -( I asked about shop) but would have been nice to be there. I think the other many stays we have had created a minimum expectation. The heating was fab, had lots of loggs for logg burner It was amazing to have a morning coffee with the sounds of sheep and cows ( actual working farm) . The hosts were lovely. The place was very clean and comfortable

Our stay was cut short due to one of our party having an accident.

The owners of Swallow Cottage could not be more helpful as they assisted us with our injured party.

Really nice place and run by lovely people. Highly recommend for a relaxing break. The only thing I don't love is the shower pressure. Lol

Swallow Cottage was in the perfect location to visit some lovely places.

The homeowner was on site and available to help if you needed it which was reassuring. The beds were super comfy and it was great to have 2 bathrooms in a relatively small property. Great enclosed garden which would be perfect in the summer. The wood burner is lovey and makes the space cosy. My only slightly negative comment is that parts of the property are a little tired. The wind and cold does blow through the window and door panes in the living area and twin bedroom which could do with resealing. There was also a lack of baking trays and some other pots and pans and a working tin opener. That being said, this wouldn't put me off and I am likely to stay again.

Very happy with our stay overall.

Nice property and lovely area. Only small point was the living area looked bigger on the pictures than it was in reality. However the garden was a great size.

Lovely cottage.

We had a lovely holiday. Dogs loved the garden. Very clean. There was a couple maintanance issues but nothing major. The wall light in the living room was not working and a bit of water leaking from the fridge. But that didn't effect our stay at all. That was definitely one of our favourite places to stay. Very nice owners and good communication. Thank you.

Plenty of room for us and we loved staying there. Will stay again in the future

The cottage was lovely and comfortable however we were inundated with flies throughout our stay.

The master bedroom patio doors were sealed closed so we couldn’t air the room and any means of escape should there be a fire in the hallway was removed as a result. The hot tub was available and we used it a couple of times, sadly though it was in a poor state of disrepair with loose and broken water jets. Location was lovely and the amenities were great but sadly it was overshadowed by the flies.

Lovely cottage that was just perfect for us.

Nice enclosed garden for the dogs which was a perfect sun trap. Good local wood walk for the dogs, just over railway line, turn right at the cottages down the lane onto the pathway into the wood, away from the sheep for an off lead walk. We were warm and snug in comfortable beds.

Property is exactly as per description.

Stayed with our 2 young grandkids who the owners allowed to go into barns to see the newly born calves and the farm tractor. Very nice touch from the owners.

Ideal location for exploring and perfect for those, like us who like to bring their dogs on holiday.

The large enclosed garden was perfect and the owners very friendly.

Welcoming and friendly owners provided guidance regarding local amenities and good dog walking routes within the area.

The cottage was ideal for our needs and provided an excellent base for our day trips. WiFi was good throughout the cottage and TV Reception was stable. In general the cottage was ideal for a peaceful, relaxing stay.

The cottage was lovely and cosy with comfy beds and everything we needed.

The area was lovely with beautiful walks nearby. Because of covid we couldn't use the hot tub because it is shared with other units which was disappointing but we still had a fab time

Apart from the back door there were no opening windows in the kitchen dinner area.

When extremely hot only option was to open the door to the patio area.

The place was easy accessible to discover Cumbria and good walks.

The shops in Brampton are great to visit and not far from Carlisle.

The Host was very friendly and helpful.

Cosy Cottage, everything was provided for a relaxing week. This was are second visit to the Cottage because there is do much to do and see in the area.

A great holiday find in a beautiful part of the country.

There were loads of great things to do around. The cottage was exactly as advertised, it was also clean and tidy and equipped with everything we needed. The owner was lovely and accommodating.

Good base for exploring Hadrian's Wall, Solway coast etc.

Well equipped kitchen and great enclosed garden which was perfect for our puppy. Owners were very welcoming. Ample parking, seating, hot water and towels...all important for a family holiday. Would definitely return.

Swallow cottage was fab for our needs.

Sparkling clean, with a warm welcome on arrival (at a safe social distance) by the owner. The cottage is well equipped and the double bed was super comfy. It was also great having our own enclosed and private garden for the dogs to run about in safely. Great location and a lovely get away.

Brilliant service from Sykes and also the owners of the cottage.

The cottage was very nice and well worth the money. Ran out of wood for the burner on the last night and the lovely owner brought some round for us. Good quiet location. Only thing at fault was the pressure of the hot water but it was useable and it was a perfect weekend. Will definitely be visiting again!

Swallow Cottage is lovely.

A real home from home with a wonderful log burner in the lounge and logs provided by the fantastic owners. There is an enclosed garden with the cottage that was great for the dogs. We were lucky to see some baby lambs too that had just been born. The owners were happy for us to go into the lambing sheds to have a look and for the kids to hold the lambs. The weather was atrocious but we still managed to find stuff to do and then each evening we battened down the hatches with the log burner and Netflix . Would highly recommend

Lovely cosy cottage.

Situated a couple of miles outside of the main village of Brampton, the cottage is an ideal base to explore all of the delights Brampton has to offer of which there is an abundance!

Swallow cottage is small but perfectly formed! Well stocked with all of the stuff you need for a long weekend tramping through the woods of Miltonrigg or meandering round the stunning Talkin Tarn lake. After your wander its well worth going into town and visiting the Howard Arms (very dog friendly) service with a smile and the food is great! Also if you just fancy a pint and to soak up a bit of cumbrian atmosphere then Shoulder of Mutton is the place to be (Also dog friendly) most pubs in town are. This place has the best home made pork pies I've ever tasted! Mrs Ackerley is a perfect host who gave us the warmest of welcome's and was a font of knowledge about the area. The garden was perfect for our two Jack Russells who simply did not want to leave! Storm Ciara did unfortunatley gatecrash our holiday but she didn't dampen our spirts. We simply lit the log fire and huddled around the table with a game and some nibbles and had some quality time completely unplugged!. The Hot tub is shared between all 4 properties and in need of some maintenance but once that's sorted it will be a perfect accompaniment to your stay. It's a short walk from the cottages but there is a summer house for you to change into your speedos :) The showers aren't the most powerful but do get the job done, however I would suggest talking your own bath towels as the ones provided are quite small. We really enjoyed our stay at Swallow cottage and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to fellow trampers with furry friends!

An excellent cottage to spend a peaceful relaxing few days had everything we needed.

My only criticism would be the towels could have included a bath sheet but we went & bought a couple so not a big deal. Also I had read the previous reviews & took my own hairdryer as one is not provided. All in all a lovely place & if we went back to that area we would certainly rebook.

my partner and I have just came back for a lovely week at this property, its normally difficult for us finding somewhere that allows us to bring our dog but the family that own this are very accommodating to both us and our pet.

definitely recommend this listing as it's very relaxing and comfortable, the cottage we had is perfect for couples with pets.

Really loved the cottage, it was clean and very cosy as described, was a good size for our family of 4 also we didn't have to travel far to get to any of the local historical sites.

I didn't give it the highest mark as we felt a bit let down by the jacuzzi not working but it didn't put a damper on the holiday

The owners very cheerful and helpful, they told us about the nearest beaches.

The Carlisle cathedral, local parks and shops and the cottage had everything for the kids dvd player and dvds, books and about all the bbq stand cause on bank holiday we had a BBQ.

Absolutely enjoyed our break here, the owners are very helpful and very friendly they even put a trampoline in garden for kids so that's a 10/10 from them!

I would definitely recommend this cottage if you want a very relaxing, calm holiday. I only have one very tiny comment to make is that we took our dogs with us and they shed there fur abit I would of liked to have had a little vacuum cleaner in the property 7 days is long time to go without vacuuming with 2 dogs. I'm only saying this cos I'm a cleaning freak!!!. Overall it was gorgeous cottage would very highly recommend it to all we will definitely be going back in future, cant wait till next time.

This was very good accommodation and we found it ideally situated for the sites that we wanted to visit.

We would certainly use this accommodation again.

We were given a warm welcome the minute we arrived.

The cottage was very clean and well looked after with all the facilities we could need. It is situated a short car ride from the village of Brampton which has a good range of places to shop, eat and drink. It is also well situated for visits to Hadrians Wall and the Lakes.

Swallow Cottage.

It was an excellent cottage. There were a few minor things which we brought to the attention of the owners such as no hanging space in the very small en-suite and it needed a shelf or basket in the shower unit (I have a back problem and reaching down on the floor of the shower for shampoo and shower gel was a bit hard for me). Otherwise it was lovely and comfortable.

My husband, dog and I spent a lovely week at Swallow Cottage, our 2nd time.

The cottage is based on a working farm, owned by Mrs Ackerley who welcomed us on our arrival, lovely lady. The cottage has everything we needed for our break away and nice and clean. Our cocker spaniel Jett loved the large garden and walks along the farm tracks. It was great to see all the new lambs in the fields. The cottage is just a 5 minute drive into Brampton with all the amenities you require and found the locals to be very welcoming. Also close to Hadrians wall and the lakes a great base. I would highly recommend it.

Very nice conversion but it has not been maintained, very scruffy.

Plus side, lots of toilet rolls and friendly owners. Minus side. We had the impression that the owners were not interested in how their guests felt, there was no book for clients comments no advice on the area only a draw full of old brochures left by previous clients. No welcome pack. No cleaning materials or hoover. Over the Easter bank holiday the weather was hot, the outside seating provided consisted of an old bench with the stain ( what was left of it ) rubbing off on you and your clothes and two old steel chairs and a small bistro table. This for four people!!!. I would not recommend this as a good holiday for four, two maybe if you are not used to any room and don't like sitting outside. Very disappointed. I would recommend the owners come and stay in the property we have taken over here in wells norfolk for the next month and learn how a proper property should be run. I guess from comments about being busy on the farm this is the excuse for what is wrong. We stayed with two large long haired dogs and hair is a problem, asked the owner of we could have a hoover, one was delivered the next day but was collected the next morning, not used to living like that, only one toilet brush for two toilets, how mean. I would say that unless your standards are low don't go here until they improve the attitude to clients and try maintaining the property.

Check in was straight forward and businesslike we were able to get in early which was helpful to both parties.

Nice sized accommodation, compact and user friendly. In desperate need of repair, door frames coming off, curtain pole in twin bedroom coming off, lights hanging down in en suite bathroom. Crockery chipped and in need of replacing. In kitchen area really needs a good degreasing. Hot tub is communal, a couple of the jets weren't working so we didn't use it but owner said is usually chargeable, but on the website the impression is the hot tub is individual. Lovely and warm, plenty of heating with a great location.

My friend and I had a lovely relaxing stay at the cottage.

There were a few issues but these were resolved quickly. it was such a lovely weekend.

When we arrived the host was on hand to welcome us and give us some ideas of things to do, which was lovely.

The cottage was well equipped and extremely comfortable. The area was as gorgeous as we expected and we spent a fabulous week relaxing, walking and generally having a lovely time. Added bonus was the sun shone most days!

Perfect little cottage to get away from it all.

Lovely woods nearby for dogs and the cottage itself was spotlessly clean. Can't wait to come back

Really lovely cottage in a good location - quiet but also close to many nearby attractions.

The photos don't do the property justice. Two spacious bedrooms; two great bathrooms; large enclosed garden was perfect for my dog to run around without annoying others and good outside seating area. The kitchen is really well equipped with a large fridge and freezer, good electric oven and hob and dishwasher. Everything is really high spec and the whole property is immaculately clean. Car parking is right outside the property and despite others being there, there was no noise or distractions. We were met by a lovely lady who showed us in then left us to it which was great. She advised about where to shop and good local attractions and there are loads of leaflets in the property. Nearby Brampton is about 5 minutes drive away and has everything you'd need for shops and eating. I've stayed in a few cottages and this is definitely one of the best. Cannot recommend highly enough.

It was a great place in a convenient location.

The accommodation was an ideal size benefitting from a bathroom and an en suite so two showers which was really useful. Well equipped and the owner was helpful and very knowledgeable about the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone.

The Farmers were very friendly and letting our grandson who joined us for a sleepover, feed the baby lambs was just magical.

The enclosed garden was great for him to play and our 2 jack Russell’s to wander safely in & the log burner was just amazing.

Beautiful little cottages in a quiet little hamlet !

!!!! What more could you ask for !!! Got there early and the owners kindly let us in as we had had a long drive and we had a tired golden retriever with us. Lots of beautiful surroundings and plenty of breathtaking walks, a perfect quiet getaway from the rat race. Won't hesitate to use them again and will most definatly recommend them.

Fantastic,had a power cut and mrs ackerley moved us in to a gorgeus cottage,perfect place for a relaxed time,thats what we needed and thats what we got,will be visiting again

Friendly but unobtrusive owners. Easy access to nearby towns and lakes. Very relaxing holiday. We were blessed with warm, sunny weather.

The Cottage was absolutely fantastic could not of asked for anything more, beautiful inside and out very clean lots of room everything you needed a home from home.

The owners where lovely people who couldn't do enough for you if you needed anything. Having the hot tub to relax in after a long days walk in the mountains with the dogs was a lovely bonus. Beautiful outlook of the mountains from our bedroom, lots of space for parking. Not far from the village of Brampton, few shops, takeaway's and Public houses it you needed anything, lovely little village. Good access to roads & motorways for travelling too & from places. Had a fantastic time in the Lake District lots of beautiful walks with fantastic scenery, will definitely visit again.

The cottage is in a very quiet and peaceful location in the coutryside, 20 minutes far from Carlisle and in a strategic position for visiting the Lake District and Hadrian's Wall.
