    “Friars Fold had everything we needed.”

    Clean, well equipped, well laid out (with 3 toilets), excellent showers and heating (especially the little log burner, needed even in August!), has ample parking and is well located for exploring the South Lakes. The property was as expected and represented in the pictures, i.e. it probably would benefit from some modernisation as it is getting a little tired. But we saw this from the photos and the price was set accordingly. We know the location of Backbarrow, so we expected the road noise ...

But we saw this from the photos and the price was set accordingly. We know the location of Backbarrow, so we expected the road noise that others have complained about. It wasn't that bad, but if you are a light sleeper take earplugs if you sleep with the windows open! There are walks from the door and lots to do in the area. Not your quintessential Lakeland cottage but a fantastic option for a family on a budget wanting to explore the Lakes and within easy access to the motorway network.

The small village of Newby Bridge takes its name from the five arched stone bridge built in 1651 over the River Leven. The famous Furness Railway, one of Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam railways, runs between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge. Visit the Lakeside Hotels and enjoy magnificent views across Windermere and the surrounding fells, or enjoy the Aquarium of the Lakes, where the naturally themed habitats, bring the history of the Lakes vividly to life.
