The Old Byre

The Old Byre is situated in a a very quiet area near Appleby.

We had a peaceful stay in a spacious and well-equipped cottage. The kitchen is large and ideal for self-catering, and the cottage retains lovely features such as exposed beams and bare stone walls. It is close to some lovely walks from Orton, and there are some excellent pubs such as the Royal Oak in Appleby and The Stag Inn in Dufton.

Absolutely fantastic.

Just as described. Everything you could need home from home. Sanford Arms is a gem lovely food.

A lovely peaceful, relaxing place.

With beautiful walks from the door step. Also a great base for visiting the local area. With a dog friendly pub/restaurant in the Village, just a short walk from the cottage.

Lovely place.

Very restful atmosphere

This property is outstanding.

I don't think the pictures really do it justice. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Bar 1 pub in the village there is nothing around but that is just how we wanted it. Everything you might want to get to is only a short drive away. The house is cozy, warm and well equipped to make your stay relaxing. We had our two pooches with us and they didn't want to leave either. We will 1000% be back :) For those who take dogs, there is a little circlular walk if you go out of the cottage, take the first right (Sharp right so walking back on self). Carry on until you can see the river and there is a gate on the left. (Stays dead end but keep going) Perfect for a little dog stroll.

Lovely cottage in a lovely quiet village just off the A66.

The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was ideal for us (2 families with babies). The owner kept us informed of any last minute info prior to our arrival. Only minor criticisms would be there were no logs or coal for the fire for our arrival despite this being advertised in the welcome pack so we had to go fireless on the first night. Secondly the kitchen knife supply was pretty poor, a new set of knives wouldn’t go a miss. Finally (and this was the email directly from Sykes), stating we should empty the dishwasher before departure. When on holiday the last thing you want to do is wash pots, we have always finished breakfast put pots in dishwasher and turned on, cleaned down kitchen. We thought this is standard. A minor thing, otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We have stayed at the Byre several times over the last 25yrs and love it there.

The facilities and set up have had very few changes over the years, we’re happy with that. To completely modernise the place would ruin the feel of it. The local residents are friendly and helpful. For those wanting to eat out, the Sandford Arms serves good food at a reasonable price. For food shopping, Kirby Stephen, Appleby and Penrith are all an easy drive away, with a wide selection of shops. Kirby Stephen and Appleby both offer good takeaway options if you’d rather eat at home but don’t want to cook, just check opening times and days online. One of the things we love is having the fire and I’ve now found decent, more economical places for wood, B&Q in Penrith and the Grocers in Appleby. Overall, this feels more like our second home than a holiday hire. The only thing I think that does need improvement are the beds. I think the mattresses could do with changing for something a bit better.

Fantastic little cottage, great base for the North Pennines, Lake District and Hadrians Wall!

! 5 of us, including 3 children (and 2 dogs) stayed in The Old Byre in late October, although the weather didn't play ball, the cottage was brilliant and the facilities were spot on! Log Burner was always on

Nice accommodation in a good location in a nice village.

Only drawback which is no fault of the accommodation is no garden

Wonderful home.

Absolutely gorgeous house and the village is just beautiful. I wish upstairs bedroom had an ensuite but otherwise the stay was perfect in a fabulous location and the pub just Along the road serves great food.

Het zou heel fijn zijn als het toilet apart was, als je met 6 personen daar verblijft is een badkamer nog wel te doen maar met het toilet in de badkamer is dat niet handig.

Een toilet apart zou wel heel fijn zijn.

Loved our stay there really enjoyed it, the house was beautiful, the Sandford arms does great food 10/10

An amazing cottage, loved the quirkiness of the place.

It's Alot bigger than we were expecting.Would definitely stay here again.

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!

I have to say value for money, location, cleanliness, there is nothing bad I can say about this property. In an amazing location. Information is provided so you know exactly what is need in accommodation along with what is in the local area. It was like a home from home to us and we are certainly looking at booking again in the near future. Thankyou for an amazing stay and one we will never forget.

Twin room mattresses were uncomfortable, I got up each day with back ache.

There was no wood available other than what was in the box and basket next to the fire. I couldn’t find the padlock code for the store cabin round the side of the Byre, so wasn’t sure weather there was wood in there. No other concerns beyond these points.

We were a party of 6 adults and found only 1 bathroom with the toilet in was very difficult.

We also felt that the 2 single beds seemed to be child size the adults sleeping on them had their feet over the end. It was very clean though, the area was very quiet but can't remember reading that the other properties were so close.

We were a party of 5 Adults, 1 Child & 2 dogs that enjoyed a relaxing stay at The Old Byre.

It was exactly as listed and had everything that was required for a very comfortable stay. We have already recommended to friends and wouldn’t hesitate to book again for ourselves.

5 star accommodation.

An absolutely amazing property, exactly as described and advertised.

It exceeded our expectations and made for a great week away from our normal lives. Our only downside was the British weather not matching our wants for sunshine. But the Old Byre was a lovely place to relax and watch the rain. 10/10 would recommend and will defo come back in the future

Lovely stay for our family of 6.

Full facilities in the cosy cottage . Clean & tidy . All linen bedding was included. Towels were included too. Local pub Sandford arms is a great family run pub, worth a visit for a pint

We had a lovely stay here.

The Old Byre is a beautiful property in a lovely setting. Everything you could possibly need was provided by the owner. We would highly recommend a visit !

The place was extremely clean and nice, i can admit it was even nicer than the pictures.

The host was very nice and friendly and flexible with our request. The area was so beautiful too. Definitely will recommend the place.

The cottage was beautiful, very warm and cosy, just a few things to mention, I chose this cottage as it had a washing machine, that was 1st on my tick list having a dog and muddy Clothes this time of year.

I booked last minute and was told the washer wasn't working and they had sent for a door lock for it. I was told engineer was coming out at the beginning of our week to fix it. Then I received a different message saying unfortunately they don't know when it would be fixed. On arriving I found the washer door had been removed.. I wasn't happy. The only other issues were the freezer compartment was enough fir 2 people but wouldn't serve 6 people. The pans unfortunately were very poor, all the teflon coating was chipped and came off in the food. We then couldn't use them. The pans didn't work on the induction hub, they took forever. I think if a new set of stainless steel pans were provided and may be some extra casserole dishes I would give it 10/10. Would definitely revisit, thank you for a lovely holiday.

Absolutely beautiful cottage, nice comfy beds.

Everything we needed was there. Loved our stay.

A beautiful charming cottage, in a lovely quiet setting!

We are a family of six, and there was plenty of room to enjoy each other’s company (with it being open plan), or take time out in the very spacious bedrooms. The cottage had everything you could possibly need. we visit the lakes at least twice a year and there is always that “something” missing., hats off to the owners attention to detail. There is a very welcoming pub (sandford arms) within walking distances, serving nice food. I would definitely recommend The Old Brye to family and friends, and hope to visit again in the future. Pat & family.

Lovely, very clean comfortable cottage!

Neighbours friendly and to say there were so many properties in the courtyard there no noise! Pub within walking distance very friendly and good food! Definitely recommend!

Only a minor comment, the bath and basin waste outlets need some maintenance, other than that everything was excellent, and as stated on the website.

Everything was perfect ,they thought of everything you could possibly use Excellent

Lovely barn conversion.

Will hopefully book again in the future

Beautiful place, wonderful home!

Definitely recommend!!!

Wow a fantastic cottage, Very clean, cosy, everything you need, beautiful!

!! The cottage is amazing and the neighbours are so friendly. The cottage is situated at the top of the village, no through road so hardly any traffic. So quite, stunning scenery and beautiful walks down the river. Very friendly owners! My daughter forgot her cuddly toy elephant, i contacted the holiday company and the owners rang me to tell them they had found it! They went out if thier way to help return it! Heather the amazing cleaner contacted me for my address and the toy arrived within days! Honestly can't fault the cottage or the village with an amazing friendly pub just down the road! We travel alot around Britain for holidays as we would never leave the dogs and this cottage and holiday has been unforgettable! With appleby and kirby stephen just minutes away by car and Penrith a large shopping centre 30 minutes away! A beautiful day trip to pooley bridge! Amazing 5 * cottage!!

Fantastic cottage, very clean.

Everything what you need is there. We were positively surprised.

Very nice holiday cottage.

We have stayed in quite a few and this was the best we have had

We’ve stayed at the Byre a number of times over the last 20yrs and love the place like a second home, so please don’t ever change it.

It was nice to see the familiar furnishings a decor, though a new stool seems to have appeared now. The facilities were all in good working order and clean. As usual for us, we didn’t sleep in the beds, we use sleeping bags on top of the beds, but still put most of the bedding to wash (not the fitted sheets), which had seen skin contact. Only one recommendation from us, is to replace the cooking knife set as they are well used, don’t sharpen particularly well and not the most robust of knife sets. Sadly we came home 2 days early as I was battling a very heavy cough from the 2nd day onwards, which was only getting worse. Despite that, we got several days in the Byre, with the fire to gather round and enjoyed the views from the windows. Thanks so much, we plan to book again for next year, but will have to see how finances pan out first, given the current financial crisis in the UK.

Fabulous property, friendly neighbours, walks from the door and only a few hundred yards to lovely dog friendly pub.

Great stay thank you.

We had a great stay at the old byre.

The property is well cared for and very clean. The location is great for exploring the local area. Just one thing which we found a bit much - there are a lot of instructions from the owner, which are useful, but some are a little overwhelming as you are on supposed to be on holiday!

A quiet location a few minutes from the busy A66, but meaning easy access to all points of the compass.

A great base for exploring the Lakes, up to Hadrians wall or across into the Dales.

Beautiful cottage, village and surrounding area.

We had a brilliant holiday with our 2 teenagers and dog. We ventured near and far enjoying the massive landscapes, walks, castles and waterfalls. Thank you

Such a lovely, well equipped little cottage, had everything we needed.

Everything was clean & fresh, did not have a single complaint about the property. Outside patio area is abit on the small size but there is a nice little walk route out towards the river. Liam from Sykes was really helpful in our hour of need.. had a vehicle breakdown the night before coming home, contacted the cleaners, who were extremely friendly and helpful, who let us stay in the property until our taxi arrived. Situated in a remote little village which only has a pub.. shops are around 15/20 mins drive away (no bus or train nearby) so a car is essential. Locals were extremely friendly and helpful giving us great tips of places to visit. Would definitely recommend and we would definitely come back to this cozy little barn cottage.

This property gets ***** had a great week at the old byre .

Overall a nice place - large, well equipped & clean .

Be aware that the large main bedroom is much darker & gloomier than shown in the photos. I found it way too dark & oppressive to sleep in & ended up in a single bed in the smaller room next door. My friend also felt she couldn’t sleep there & chose to use the upstairs bedroom instead, even though it meant coming downstairs to use the bathroom. Also worth noting that whilst the property is dog friendly which is great, there isn’t a secure area to let the dog off .

Absolutely beautiful cottage in an ideal location for anyone wanting peace and quiet, it is the most well equipped cottage i have ever stayed at.

Neighbours are lovely and the guy opposite was very helpful and told us the best dog walks, lovely friendly pub with great food. Immaculately clean with very comfy beds, we really didn't want to leave, unfortunately there was supposed to be a calendar in the info file for the recycling but this is not there so we missed putting it out, sorry. Cant wait to come back

Really lovely cottage, spotlessly clean, all the utilities you need, had a really enjoyable stay

Fantastic place to stay, the property had everything we needed and was clean and warm.

Great pub down the road,? Closed Tuesday. Ideal base for many walks, we will be back!

Absolutely lovely stay for Christmas 2021.

We throughly enjoyed it. Gorgeous location, with nice walks. The cottage is very cosy and relaxing. The only downside was the small fridge/freezer. We'd stocked up for Christmas but couldn't fit everything in. Luckily it was cold out. It didn't damper the stay though and we would defo return!! Thank you for a lovely stay.

An amazing cottage, everything was perfect.

It was so quiet, yet ideally situated to visit beautiful places in the lakes. Our whole family did not want to leave. We have tried yo book for the oncoming new year but uts already booked, however we can't wait to return to our little piece of heaven .

Idyllic cottage with a warm welcoming feeling set in a perfect surrounding fully enjoyed our stay there ,would highly recommend it specially if your looking for a quiet relaxing place to stay

Lovely area, great property and close to interesting places of interest.

We have stayed at the Old Byrne several times over the years and knew what to expect and were not disappointed.

Our only complaint was when trying to get the oven working, the clock was in some sort of edit mode, which disabled the cooker function. With no instructions for the cooker available, it took time to work out how to get it working. When you have the dish prepared and ready too coo, but cannot get the oven working, this is a real annoyance. Overall, an enjoyable stay in comfortable surroundings.

Cottage is lovely with great.

Very clean and comfortable. We had a very happy stay for our week. All the people in the village welcomed us and stopped for a chat on our daily dog walks. In a very pretty area with so much to do you won’t get bored. As others have said, upstairs bed could do with a new mattress. Otherwise everything else was perfect. Cant wait to go back.

An all round pleasant accommodation.

.... The neighbours are very nice..... The upstairs bed needs to be upgraded as the mattress is thin and the bed squeaks like mad preventing sleep. The kitchen pans were of a poor quality and not effective on a electric hob as the bases are distorted and bent. The location was good and the surrounding area beautiful.

We absolutely adored our stay!

Thank you so very much

Excellent booking process.

The old byre was beautiful! It had everything we needed and was spotless when we arrived. Our dog was also very comfortable.

We had a lovely stay.

Relaxing log burner in a very unique barn conversion. A very comfortable family base with everything you need.

Lovely property in a great location.

Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and would love to return again for longer. Pub down the road is excellent, had a great Sunday Lunch there, very friendly and dogs are welcome.

What a lovely few days we spent with the family in this tradiontal barn.

Lovely surroundings and lots of walks. Walking distance to the Sandford Arms where we ate on an evening, lovely food. The only minus I would say about the Old Byre is that it is lacking in an en suite/ bathroom upstairs. One bathroom between a family not ideal. Nevertheless we would stay again.

One of the best holliday cottages we have been in, set in a beautiful village, the cottage had everything we needed however we would have liked a small enclosed garden to keep our grandchild and dogs safe, but that did not detract from our holiday experience.

as the cottage more than made up for that.

it was better than we expected - much more space than we imagined.

Sometimes photos can make a place look bigger - exactly the opposite in this case. Also the pub in the hamlet was a complete surprise - brilliant.

The Old Byre was a well equipped, spacious clean place.

It was in a small quaint village where the locals were friend and helpful. We will definitely come back to the Old Byre again. There was alot to do for for our children aged 2 and 6 in the surrounding towns and some beautiful walks for our dog too. We have used cottages a few times where the owners have placed stipulations where we have to clean the cottage upon departure as well as other rules which has put added stress on to our stay. This was not the case with the Old Byre, the owners seemed laid back in their information booklet and provided fantastic information and guidance on where to go and what to do in the surrounding areas. If you are looking within this area we would definitely recommend the Old Byre a home away from home!

Lots of space in the house and it was nice and cosy

Cottage is fabulous would just like a fenced off area for dogs to go out.

This is the first time the family have stayed in a cottage.

We weren't disappointed, home from home. If its just a peaceful holiday its ideal but if you need to be entertained wrong location as you will have to travel. The pub about 5 mins walk is very welcoming and serves lovely meals, but for any kind of activity non provided as like darts sports t v pool or music.

Was a lovely holiday cottage and very well located.

The only negative really was I could not find anywhere a checking out time.

Great cottage, only let down by the really uncomfortable bed which caused daily back aches.

A little more thought could go into the furniture positioning etc. For example dressing table nowhere near a plug socket for a hairdryer. It has no garden for dogs to run in but there's a very quiet lane next to the cottage. Well equipped though and in a very handy spot for the Lakes and the Dales.

We all had a lovely stay.

This is a very well-equipped and lovely place to stay. We highly recommend Kendal and Keswick.

Lovely holiday, beautiful scenery.

Cottage ideal. Weather was kind to us. Thank you.

A lovely restful weekend in your gorgeous cottage.

I had the best nights sleep and woke up well rested (slept in the single bed). The cottage has everything I could ask for, a real home from home! Would highly recommend your cottage to anyone.
