Thompson Cottage

The house was very comfortable, with a lovely garden and a great location.

The kitchen is well supplied for cooking and eating in the house or outdoors, and the mattresses were particularly comfortable. Our only notes were that there were several spiders in the ground floor toilet (ceiling corners), which made a few folks uneasy—it would be great if that could be addressed! The main room could be made a bit more cosy with area lamps instead of only recessed lighting—we’re a bunch of readers and would’ve liked some softer lighting in the evenings. Would definitely book again—excellent value for a nice home away from home!

This cottage was gorgeous and comfortable for our family of 5.

It was a lovely location to explore the Lake District being in between both windermere and ambleside. The garden is sooo pretty and the kids loved playing in it. Only request to the host would be to have more plates ans teaspoons to avoid having to turn the dishwasher on at every meal.

No problems at all everything was as written in the specification .

The only thing I would have preferred was a larger duvet on the double bed but that’s a personally preference .We would definitely stay there in the future

On the whole the property was well located, clean, tidy and warm.

It was let down by the downstairs Bathroom, which was built as a wetroom, but as the whole room flooded when you had a shower it was impossible to get dried off, or use the room for some time afterwards. Also the Underfloor heating and fan in this room had major issues. We ended up not using the room for the rest of our stay. However the upstairs bathroom had a toilet, shower and bath which were well presented. The is also a lovely track coming off Holbeck Lane which takes you behind Low Wood Spa resort to the Main road. This makes walking to the Ambleside (Waterhead) pier in around 30mins possible. We would recommend to anyone looking for 3 bedroom accomodation within easy distance of Ambleside and Windermere, that they consider this property, especially if the 2nd shower room is not required.

Communication up to arrival was good with info we needed.

We were happy to arrive at Thompson Cottage. It was cleanly and neatly presented. I especially liked the kitchen pack laid out ready of oven gloves, tea towels, dish sponge, cloth, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid. You don't always get these provisions in rentals but I think they should be standard. I would just say the decals on the oven dials have worn away. I figured it out but could do with new sticker symbols for ease. The cottage was spacious. The living area area was comfortable with a games cupboard and stack of DVD's, including Miss Potter, which we enjoyed. The bedrooms were a good size and nicely presented. One daughter complained her matress was hard but actually slept very well - she just wasn't used to a firmer mattress. There is easy parking for 2 cars. The location was ideal. I would happily recommend this property.

Lovely cottage; plenty space for our family of 4 plus Grandad, great facilities- weather glorious (of course it rained a bit- it’s the Lake District!

), but we used the washer & dryer several times having a 9 yo that likes to find the hardest route and then gets wet feet! Perfectly clean (don’t heed previous reviews that said it wasn’t). Thankyou - totally loved our stay here

Leaks on the kitchen floor and from the upstairs shower were discovered on arrival on Friday.

Emergency number and all other Sykes numbers go to voicemail until Monday morning. Plumber finally comes out Wednesday morning, leaving us without showers for 5 days. No sense of urgency from Sykes or the owners. Uncomfortable beds, a barely usable kitchen and lack of showers lead us to leave early. I notify Sykes and no interest in the issues other than letting the owner know cleaning can start a day early. Shoddy.

Unfortunately, we wouldn’t recommend this cottage.

We had to hoover the kitchen upon arrival as it was noticeably dirty, and overall, the property didn’t feel well-cleaned or maintained. The upstairs shower was difficult to keep at a constant warm temperature, and the downstairs shower flooded. The duvets were extremely uncomfortable, completely bunched up, and unlike anything we’ve ever slept under before. Additionally, there was a blood stain on one of the sheets. It was incredibly cold when we arrived, taking hours to warm up – a simple fix if you know guests are due. The kitchen tap sprays in all directions, which is frustrating, and the radiator in the twin room wouldn’t turn off. The location is fantastic, but unfortunately, it doesn’t outweigh the issues mentioned above. Proceed with caution when booking.

We had a lovely three days at Thompson cottage.

The property at Thompson Cottage was very comfortable and comfortable.

The property was warm and in a good location. One down side is that it is listed for 5 people but the kitchen has only seating for 4 people.

Double bed- needs to be king size as its so small myself and my husband struggled to stay in it.

I slept one night in another room to get more space. Would gladly have had smaller bedside tables to accommodate. Needs mattress topper in all the rooms. The mattresses are so uncomfortable we didnt sleep the entire stay. Downstairs lights dont turn off on three nearest the window. No heating in kitchen or downstairs toilet working. In winter it is freezing and not enjoyable to use. Downstairs shower doesnt drain quick enough to be able to use, almost flooded hallway, took 2 hrs to drain. Mirror rusty in downstairs toilet. All directions on oven and hob rubbed off had to google for settings. This is very dangerous with a gas hob. One ring dial on gas hob doesnt work properly/dial sticks. Again very dangerous. Taps on bath move about/loose. Clocks not set to the right time (1 hr ahead) and unable to change some of them. Steak knives need updating very blunt. Could do with a measuring jug Could do with more than one baking tray for the oven. Signal on the tv goes out regularly. We have stayed at Thompson Cottage a few times over the years and previously enjoyed our stays. Unfortunately the property needs now some updating and money spending on it go bring it back to annacceptable standard. Unfortunately we would not be booking again unless the above could be accomodated. The bed situation being the most critical in my opinion.

Only one big bag available apart from that could not fault the place leave extras bin bags under the main build bag.

Cottage was superb on the whole but the cleanliness wasn’t the best and the beds were absolutely intolerable - they were so uncomfortable it was more comfortable to sleep on the floor, as we did from time to time or the settee - none of us could wait to get home to jump back in our own beds and get a decent nights sleep.

If they could upgrade the beds this cottage would be perfect but there’s nothing worse than a bed like that after a long day walking.

We would stay at this cottage without reservation again.

The cottage was located up a hill and accessed via a single track lane with passing places. It is situated with a few other properties and had parking for 2 vehicles. The cottage had everything we needed to use whilst staying there. It was clean and presented well. The main shower was fantastically powerful and after a long day in sun screen clagg was great at removing such clagg! There was plenty of washing up liquid, toilet roll, dishwasher stuff etc to get you started. Like all self catering cottages; facilities and maintenance is such a subjective thing that if you look hard enough you'd find something wrong or not to your liking. However, how i like to think of this, is the response if you do find something wrong. We noticed a few minors which we highlighted to the lovely owner, Kate, and they didn't impact on our usage of the cottage as we adapted. Unless owners or cleaners are made aware of things this will happen.

Good points Lovely location, good parking, warm house and comfortable.

The utility area is a great spot for shoes and coats. The WiFi was good and we didn't have any issues with it. Points to note The house was not cleaned to a satisfactory standard upon arrival. I had to clean the kitchen sides, the table cloth, the toilet and sink vanity unit. Plus we moved the coffee table to the side to allow a place for our young children to play and found it was not clean underneath. I had to hoover it. Not a great start especially given the fact the changeover is out at 9am, check in at 4pm. The kitchen is poorly equipped which could be easily rectified, something mentioned in previous comments. We did enjoy our stay but expected better levels of cleanliness from Sykes.

Cottage was comfortable, downstairs shower room could do with an upgrade floor water runs the wrong way and the cubicle up stairs door won’t shut properly and seal’s need looking at.

Wi-Fi connection could be better not many suitable adult films if your renting in the winter. More cereal bowls would be good 2 out of the 4 were chipped and cracked. On a positive note we enjoyed our stay at Thompson Cottage. The weather was kind to us and we did a lot of walking.

Overall very happy with the house and it was in a brilliant location.

Only suggested feedback would be an upgrade of WiFi, as it was pretty terrible. Also, the cleanliness of the propert could be slightly better, it was slightly dirty when we arrived. Also, a few more utensils in the kitchen, bigger pots etc. over all a great stay and would happily stay again

Well equipped overall though a few things are missing in the kitchen, given that up to 5 people could stay there (chopping board, bigger pots and pans, more plates, an oven dish… also scissors!

). Soap holder in the shower is broken. Hot water failed three times during our stay, requiring a boiler restart – this needs looking at (message was something like “pump fault, water shortage”).

Lovely cottage, really warming and homely.

It was the perfect size for what we needed and the garden was lovely too. There were a few utensils and bits that the kitchen didn’t have that would have helped us for cooking but other than that we loved it and would definitely consider staying again.

The property was everything we needed and more.

We stayed as we were attending a wedding locally. It was very comfortable and plenty of space for 4 adults and a toddler. Thank you to the owners for the home comforts down to playing cards and small mirror ( for checking back of wedding hair). We would love to come back and explore the beautiful area

We really enjoyed our stay here.

House was excellent. Only small niggle was that we couldn’t find any guidance on the oven and dishwasher functions (as the symbols on the machines had been rubbed off due to lots of past usage).

The property was generally excellent and with a few improvements, it would be perfect - The beds were all very old and uncomfortable.

All the matresses were in dire need of replacement to something more comfortable. This impacted a good nights sleep for everyone. Although a property for 5 people, there was not enough knifes/forks/spoons/plates etc - there probably was once in the past but since breakages occur - some hadn't been replaced. The Wifi was woefully slow, but worked for basic needs.

From booking the holiday to leaving the property, using Sykes was painless and easy.

Regular email updates made it simple to check in and out and and had all the other necessary information to make it a comfortable stay The cottage as beautifully kept and in a lovely locating very close to all the amenities that Ambleside has to offer.

Well placed accommodation for access to Lake District attractions and well equipped house One or two minor house keeping points left with owner - none of which have affected our holiday

there were some minor issues such as certain lights not working ,draws in sideboards broken a lack of certain kitchen ware and it was unclear if there were to be 5 people staying how room could be made in the dining area to accomodate everybody.

Fantastic location, just far enough away from Ambleside.

An excellent base and an excellent cottage, very clean and tidy.

Slightly away from Ambleside which was nice and peaceful but close enough if you needed anything. Only one small issue was the broken peeler in the draw, but that just needed a replacement. Overall an excellent break

We cannot recommend this cottage as it had not been cleaned to a satisfactory standard, especially bearing in mind Covid-19.

Four adults from our group spent the first two hours remedying the situation. The following points are just some of the problems we encountered. The kitchen lacked the expected cleanliness; the fridge had food remnants on the shelves and there was mould growing on one of them, the microwave had food splatters on the inside, there were food crumbs, etc. on work tops and the oven was covered in burnt food residues. Both the wet room and shower had pink and black moulds growing on the shower heads and in several other areas. The child’s cot was stained and dirty. Many contact surfaces (e.g. the bannisters) felt sticky and grimy and there was clumps of hair on the lounge carpet. Although the cottage sleeps five, there are only four dining chairs. We numbered five adults, plus a toddler using a booster seat. The TV was not connected to the outside Freeview cable. Following the thunderstorm, the Wifi did not work and a password was not provided to remedy the problem.

Really nice cottage, in a great location for Lake Windermere and the ghylls, fells, tarns and peaks around Ambleside, and beyond.

Super quiet and well appointed. Underfloor heating in the main bathroom was very special too :-)

Lovely accommodation, felt at home as soon as we walked in the door.

The cleanliness was impeccable and the cottage just oozed comfort. Beautiful area and lovely garden. Would highly recommend.

The cottage was so cosy and clean, situated in a very peaceful neighbourhood and close to many sights.

It looked even better than in the pictures! There was roomy parking space, which was such a relief! The kitchen has every utensil you would need. There were plenty of maps and leaflets, as well as board games. The rooms were great, everything was so tidy and the finishing touches made it very homely. Only thing that we would have liked was more toilet paper as there were only two rolls provided for three nights and four people. Other than that, we had such an enjoyable stay - thank you so much!

A real home from home.

The location was good for access to many of the National Park's many features. We were able to sit in the garden to eat supper. So peaceful.

The shower was blocked so was unusable until we rang to get it fixed.

The cleanliness of the property was below expectations: there were nail clippings on the carpet and a used sanitary towel in one of the bedrooms. The wood burning stove hadn't been swept out and theŕe were socks etc in some of the drawers upstairs. Also the cleaner had left the cleaning sponges in the middle of the kitchen and had forgotten her coat.

Had an amazing week.

It was a lovely house, spotlessly clean, very comfy beds and everything needed for a relaxing stay, including lots of games in the cupboard for the rainy days.

Great location and lovely cottage for a family to stay in.

Beautiful garden for children to play in and terrace to relax on. Could just do with a few more essentials eg hand soap and logs.

My husband had to move everything in the shed as soon as we got there to get our Mountain Bikes in ( not designated bike storage but shed full of BBQ, lawn mower, chairs, old white goods etc ) The kitchen could have been a lot cleaner, oven and extractor fan were really greasy.

The cottage was in a great location, not far from loads of attractions and really quiet despite having a few neighbours.

Bike storage was a bit short on space - if that was meant to be the small outhouse, it had chairs and BBQ etc in leaving no room for our bikes.

Wasn't a problem in our case as they just stayed in the cars.

Lovely cottage , suited us so well ( 2 couple with 4 year old child ).

Perfect location, close to Windermere and Ambleside but tranquil and offering all amenities .

The cottage was really well equipped.

Everything you could think of was there in the kitchen, and the house was a good size for our family of 5. It was also in a great position to explore the area. Amazing powerful shower, log fire and a big garden all brilliant things about the cottage. Already looking at dates next year to go back. Also, all Sykes staff so kind and helpful whenever I rang the office.

This was a truly lovely cottage.

We spent four days here in a very snowy February. Convenient for the whole of the Lake District and some lovely walks around the local area. We have used Sykes regularly and have never been disappointed. The cottage was lovely and clean, bedding and towels were lovely and fresh. The only negative was the starter kit for the log burner. We've stayed in a few cottages with log burners and there is always a basket with logs, kindling etc on the hearth to start you off. There was nothing when we arrived so we looked in the information booklet again nothing. Eventually we found a key in the utility room for the shed and in there we found a box with 3 logs and some tongs and a couple of brushes and little shovels. It's just as well that we had taken note of the weather and brought some extra logs and kindling with us otherwise we would have struggled to light the logs that had been left for us. It wasn't the end of the world as there is central heating but if its included in your price then it should be there. Apart from this everything else was excellent.

The holiday was quite relaxing.

However due to the location at the top of quite a steep incline maybe not suitable for the elderly .

This was my first booking with Skyes, it took me a while to find what I was looking for, but I was glad I did a longer search.

Thompson cottage is so warm and cosy has soon as you open the door, it is clean and has everything you need, full kitchen, washing machine and dryer, games, films etc. We had awful weather so couldn't make use of the garden, the cottage was warm so we didn't use the fire bet its cosy with that lit. My daughter came with her baby and we made use of the travel cot. It was great to have us all together. This is a cottage people need to stay in and there's parking for two cars, BRILL
