About the location

BOLTON LOW HOUSES

Wigton 3 miles; Cockermouth 13 miles; Carlisle 14 miles; Keswick 18 miles.

Situated eight miles north of the Lake District National Park, the small northern fells village of Bolton Low Houses offers a pub serving good food. Only three miles away is the historic market town of Wigton. Lord Melvyn Bragg was a native of Wigton, and used the town (called Thurston in some of his writings) and the surrounding area as the setting for his novels, which include A Time to Dance. Close by, set just inside the National Park is the lovely village of Caldbeck, which is well worth a visit. The area has something for everyone, including the market town of Keswick, Lakes Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, the Solway Coast, which is well-known for its golf courses and the town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, plus within driving distance is the cathedral city of Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Borders. Bolton Low Houses is an ideal base for exploring the area.
