ireby , cumbria & the lake district
  • 4 guests

Description

Situated to the north of Skiddaw in the pretty village of Ireby this 2 bedroomed cottage which sleeps four people is ideally located to explore the northern lakes. Free use of two mountain bikes and a set of golf clubs.

Situated just to the north of Skiddaw, Ireby is an excellent centre for touring and walking throughout the northern Lakes yet is relatively unspoilt and provides a haven from the hustle and bustle of the busier parts of the Lake District. Ambleside and Windermere are however within easy reach.

There are numerous walking opportunities from the door over the Caldbeck Fells and Skiddaw which leads you into Keswick (12 miles by road) where many amenities including Derwent Water, restaurants, pubs and shops await you. After a busy day on the fells or sight seeing a relaxed evening can be enjoyed sat around the stove in this cosy cottage or in the local pub, just next door, which serves a variety of beers and good home cooked food.

Ale Cottage has retained much of its original character with exposed beams and latched doors throughout and is heated by night storage heaters.

We had a wonderful week at Ale cottage, it was comfortable and cosy and in a great position to get around Keswick and the surrounding area There is no shop close by but the farm shop was a few mins away for milk and eggs The steps are quite steep and you may struggle, but otherwise a good work out We enjoyed our stay

On arrival it looked good, but then we found the broken toilet seat in the en suite, mould in the downstairs wardrobe, and we had to remove our clothes because they smelled of damp.

In the main bathroom, the bath panel was broken, the bath tap was loose, and there was mould around the grout. In the kitchen there was no hot water and the tap was broken, which was a pain as we had to boil the kettle to do everyday basic things. We also found dog waste in the garden, which we cleaned up. We were looking forward to being able to go for a meal and drink at the local pub in the evenings because my family drive for a living, only to find out it had closed the previous year. This was one of the reasons we booked this accommodation, so it was very disappointing. We would have changed our booking if we had been informed. The property was up for sale, and one day when we came back the gate was open. Another day, someone turned up saying they had a viewing appointment. We ended up going home a day early because it wasn't the break we expected, and we would not return.
