Back in 2023, staycations across the UK contributed an estimated £28 billion to the UK’s economy. A staggering amount that solidifies how popular UK breaks are.

Our UK staycation statistics report for 2023 revealed that over half of Brits were very interested in staycations and were more likely to book a UK trip than one abroad.

Our parent company Sykes Cottages, saw a 31% uplift in bookings for Summer 2023 year compared to the previous year. With all that the UK has to offer, it’s easy to see why Brits will take 3 UK breaks on average. How many have you got planned so far?

The Lakes leads the way:

It has come to no surprise to us that Cumbria and the Lake District is in the top 5 most popular locations for a 2023 staycation. Cumbria has ‘beat’ other popular locations such as Devon into the top 5. The Lake District is also set to be a top destination this Winter.

May bookings for 2023 brought in a strong footfall to the Lake District. Out of  UK destinations, Cumbria had 3 out of the top 5 locations for May half term bookings: Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick all made it into the top 5. With so much to offer: historical sites, incredible scenery and outdoor activities and also a coast line, it’s easy to see why the Lakes is a top destination.

Consumer trends:

Self catering is popular with consumers, our data shows that 54% of respondents prefer their UK holiday to be in self catering accommodation. This is often due to it being more budget friendly for families and also offers a more spacious living area.

People also want to take the opportunity to holiday with their dog. Dog friendly bookings are higher than previously with lots of our guests wanting to bring their four legged friend along for an adventure. 34% of bookings in 2023 were for holiday stays with pets. Making your property pet friendly is likely to lead to a fuller calendar with more bookings.

Luxury amenities continue to be favoured by holidaymakers. Hot Tubs are still popular as ever, with bookings for properties with hot tubs up 104%. After a long day hiking and exploring in the Lakes, a hot tub is the perfect way for guests to relax.
