Tracy “Lovely spot for a short break, amazing views and very comfortable accommodation”
- Tracy, May 2025 -
Thomasina “Wonderful little cottage in a really lovely quiet location!”
Only 30 mins to pub or to lake, and easy to park at.
- Thomasina, May 2025Lindsey “A cottage full of rustic charm with stunning views across Keswick and the surrounding mountains.”
Beds were comfortable, towels were soft and we found everything we needed in the kitchen with a Nespresso machine for the coffee lovers. The lanes in the village are single track. This didn't bother us but other people might like to be prepared, especially if they have a large car/suv. A very comfortable stay, we didn't want to leave.
- Lindsey, April 2025Alona “Beautiful cosy cottage - only quibble was sockets for bedside lights in main bedroom didn’t work but not a huge issue.”
Will definitely rebook for next year.
- Alona, March 2025William “Second visit to this cosy detached bungalow and again did not disappoint.”
It’s warm, clean and benefits from fantastic views through the lounge window. A large part, for us, is the location, we park our vehicle on arrival and don’t move it until departure. We either walk, cycle or bus. The locality has so many options for outdoor activities raging from a gentle stroll to challenging hill walks and MTB rides. For our needs, Woodside ticks all the boxes as both a touring base and cosy accommodation to sit and gaze at the views.
- William, February 2025Stuart “Lovely property, this was our second stay and enjoyed it very much.”
Only thing to mention is that the double power socket close to the double bed was not working, making it difficult to plug in the bedside lamps.
- Stuart, February 2025Thank you for your feedback; it is great to read that you enjoyed your stay so much. We are sorry that you found a plug socket not to be working; please don't hesitate to contact us if any issue arises during your stay and we will be happy to attend to it straight away. Neil “Lovely cottage.”
My third visit. I was there during storm Eowyn that brought a tree down on the local road. The power in Thornthwaite went out for 5 hours so we had a candles and wood stove adventure for a while. Snowdrops came out on the hillside. Rabbits joined the local wildlife that visited the garden. Such a peaceful place.
- Neil, January 2025Claire “This is the third time staying at the cottage and I love the location, it’s very cosy & comfortable.”
The kitchen could do with an upgrade of utensils, glasses, kettle etc. It’s a shame there wasn’t any wood & kindling just for the first night. I also think during the winter months the check in time should be earlier so it’s light when you arrive. I thinks it’s reasonable to have check in & out the same as a hotel 3pm and 11am.
- Claire, November 2024Neil “Another lovely stay at Woodside.”
Idyllic, warm, beautiful views, great walks nearby, the loudest thing is the bird song. I saw a red squirrel on this visit (and two greys). I think they'd been doing maintenance outside the cottage the week before. Looked very neat. When I arrived the thermostat read, 'low pressure.. Refill'. I did that and the heating came back on. The WiFi went out for a few hours on Tuesday/Friday. The kitchen tap came loose, leaked so I pushed it back in and screwed the collar back. Minor niggles don't spoil my holiday but for owner's information.
- Neil, November 2024Neil “Lovely stay.”
Felt like a real, cosy home. Fantastic view. Caught a glorious sunrise one day. Easy access to North Lakes. Bus stop is two minutes walk so don't have to use the car. Will be booking again soon.
- Neil, October 2024Bea “The general waste bin outside was full to overflowing when we arrived (next to where we park the car) with a full black bin liner on top of it.”
The bin liner was removed by the bin lorry during the week but the bin was not emptied. It smelt, people had pushed full dog poo bags into the already overflowing lid and there were flies around it. There was only recycling for paper which in 2024 is extremely poor; we have stayed in many Lakeland villages ( including one a few miles away at the end of August) and alway been able to recycle glass, paper and plastic. People had also put dog poo bags in the paper recycling bin during the week. Furthermore, guests have written in guest book very recently that although laundered the towels had marked and stains on them - this was the case for two of our towels …this is very poor. The cottage was as described but did not match up to other 4* cottages we have stayed in, in the area. A simple welcome pack of some milk biscuits and tea and coffee would cost little and is the norm for most other cottages now, especially those rating themselves as 4*. The cottage was clean and was warm but waste and recycling are issues that need addressing.
- Bea, September 2024Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are pleased that you found the property to be warm and clean. We take your concerns regarding cycling on board. Thank you The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner
Joanna “Woodside is in a fabulous position, with lovely views.”
It’s cosy, clean and comfortable and provides everything needed for a lovely holiday. There are some minor improvements that could be made; the shower is very weak and the bath towels provided are very small, however this would not put us off returning as the cottage is otherwise excellent. The views and surrounding area is stunning.
- Joanna, September 2024Orinta “We had a lovely week here.”
Perfect location, cottage had everything we needed. The forest is just at the back of the house. We can not wait to come back.
- Orinta, August 2024John “Another perfect stay in this lovely comfortable little cottage in it’s wonderful landscape.”
- John, June 2024Jeanette “A really lovely property, comfortable and equipped with everything needed for a lovely stay.”
Very comfortable bed Beautiful country side. Lovely garden. The art gallery and tearoom in the village is a must and only minutes away from the cottage, only a three mile visit to Keswick We did find a few cobwebs in the lounge and bits under the sofa cushions apart from this everything was absolutely fine and we would not hesitate to return again
- Jeanette, April 2024Deborah “The location of Woodside was excellent.”
The outside area needs attention, and the bathroom needs updating. It lets the cottage down. The cottage was very dusty, full of hairs and cobwebs everywhere, especially hanging down from the radiators. The door handle areas were dirty and needed cleaning as were the mirrors. Also, a recycle bin for glass is needed. Other holiday cottages in the area had them. Parking space was good. The kitchen was well equipped, and the double bed was comfortable. The views were lovely.
- Deborah, April 2024Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear about the cleanliness issues, I have escalated this to the housekeeping manager for urgent review. - The owner relations team Property Owner
Jennie “Really lovely cottage; had a lovely feel to it, good location and had everything we needed.”
- Jennie, April 2024Tom “Beautiful, warm, spacious cottage.”
Great views of the fells opposite, which were snowcapped during our stay. Drying room a helpful addition. A few basic food essentials such as salt and teabags would have been very helpful
- Tom, March 2024William “A very nice property, warm comfortable and clean.”
Furnished to a good standard. Enjoyed a long weekend walking and biking straight from the door. We would book again without hesitation.
- William, February 2024Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear that you had an enjoyable stay. We hope to welcome you again. The Lakelovers Owner Relations Team Property Owner
Helen “This was our 2nd time at this lovely cottage - and none of us could fault this beautiful well placed and cozy property which we hope to stay at again.”
For myself, being somewhat older than my son & his fiance, the addition of a handrail to the righthand side of the steps both up to the garden from the road and into the front of the property itself would make it absolutely perfect! As they are now can be a little unnerving.
- Helen, November 2023Andrew “We enjoyed a lovely and comfortable stay at Woodside which is a charming property.”
It enjoys fabulous views over the mountains and is peaceful. We were also very lucky with the gorgeous weather and would like to come back as Woodside is very well located for Keswick and Cockermouth plus an abundance of walks over the fells. Whinlatter Forest is literally behind the cottage! Having stayed at other Sykes properties we were slightly disappointed not to find a welcome pack of basics such as milk or bread and that we needed to purchase more washing up liquid and handsoap due to those at the property being nearly finished and what was left was watered down! The cottage information book could do with updating and clearer guidance on rubbish disposal. Some minor points but all in all a very pleasant stay and a location we'd like to come back to.
- Andrew, September 2023Colleen “We enjoyed a relaxing week at Woodside cottage.”
The cottage had everything we needed. It was very peaceful and quiet. The views were amazing, we would definitely recommend. To reach the property, we would advise to continue up past Thornthwaite Gallery, immediately after the gallery car park there is a lane that is untarmacked on your right, do not go up it, the road bends to the left at this point, you will pass two cottages on the right hand side, then there is a sharp right, Woodside cottage is the first property you come to on your left. (for larger vehicles to negotiate this sharp right, it may be easier to do a three point turn further up the road where the road forks and return back to this junction, making it a lot easier to negotiate).
- Colleen, August 2023John “We loved our stay at Woodside Cottage.”
The small parking space is adequate even for our long estate car. The narrow lanes require thought as to the direction you wish to face! We were blessed with perfect weather and the countryside was at its best. The views from the cottage are wonderful looking across to the fells. We look forward to returning!

Carol “The property was comfortable and clean once inside.”
Had some difficulty with the key lock box ..there is a knack (very frustrating) The outside parking space is very small and tricky...one way only to park from narrow lane .
- Carol, April 2023Pamela “We had a wonderful few days at Woodside.”
We'd definitely stay here again when visiting the Northern Lakes.
- Pamela, April 2023G “The cottage was clean and well equipped.”
It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.
- G, October 2022Carol “The property was not cleaned to the standard we would expect.”
The garden furniture was broken, dirty and not fit for use. The oven trays, grill pan ,frying pan and wooden spoons all need replacing. Inside the microwave was rusted! The oven was dirty and smelt. The washer door had to be kept shut because of the smell. There was dust and cobwebs in a lot of place's. The bins in the kitchen and toilet obviously hadn't been cleaned for quite a while. To say we weren't happy with the cottage is an understatement!!
- Carol, September 2022Anne Marie “Lovely property very homely”
- Anne Marie, August 2022Sally “This was a lovely holiday property to stay in.”
Lots of room and a place to store a bike and I would certainly stay here again. The only minor down side was there was no sink in the toilet room, I prefer a bathroom with a toilet. Hot tap in the bathroom needs attention. You may need a word with your neighbours living opposite as in a few years time their trees will be blocking your beautiful view.
- Sally, June 2022Helen “Lovely stay in comfortable cottage, very peaceful.”
We very much enjoyed the views of the Fells from the front 2 rooms and the bluebells were all out in the garden. It's a little dark with the trees at the back of the cottage which we expected, but you're not going to spend much time in the kitchen on holiday I'd hope. We saw a Nuthatch on the bird feeder and a couple of field mice have made their home underneath the tree it hangs from- lovely to watch at dusk. We didn't need the log burner but the heating seemed pretty efficient on chilly days and evenings- little sun falls on the cottage so it isn't the warmest without heating. There's a half-sized freezer and a tumble drier in the outbuildings at the back - I'd assumed from the picture there could only be a freezer compartment to the fridge- which was useful. The double bed was very comfy but when my partner was banished to the other room for snoring he reported those mattresses weren't so great. Probably fine for children though as lighter. Worth popping over the road to Thornthwaite gallery for lunches and teas- very nice.
- Helen, May 2022Martin “Perfect! Spotlessly clean.”
Very comfortable and well-equipped. The living room is filled with sunlight in the morning and it is so relaxing to simply sit and admire the view of the mountains. A simple short journey into Keswick, which seems quieter and more friendly than towns in the southern lakes. Art Gallery and veggie cafe just 2 minutes away well worth a visit. Lovely, if energetic, walk up to Whinlatter Forest Park from the door. Perhaps the owners should clarify the wi-fi situation on the Sykes site. There is wi-fi but due to factors beyond their control it is apparently limited to 100GB pm. Thus, if previous visitors over-use it you might not have it. We had no such problems. If we return to the area we would certainly try and rebook this cottage. Recommended !
- Martin, April 2022Shaz “Lovely, warm cottage with fantastic views and a great location.”
Already re-booked for next year!
- Shaz, February 2022Brian “Enjoyed our holiday Lovely Cottage Cleanliness and facilities very good”
- Brian, December 2021Stephen “Lovely traditional Lakeland cottage with lots of original features.”
Immaculately clean and well maintained. Located in a rural location so peaceful and quiet. We were blessed with clear blue skies and fantastic views of Skiddaw and the fells. Struggled with the wood burner as a few previous visitors did. The Visitors book has lots of people coming back time after time - one on their 26th visit! I can see why. We only stayed for 3 nights but could have easily stayed longer
- Stephen, December 2021Sarah “Cosy property in a great location.”
Very well equipped with everything we needed. The Christmas decorations were a great touch thanks. The bird feeder action was amazing. Despite the description of no wifi-there was wifi (but not unlimited). We couldn't get the log burner or DVD to work- but still loved our stay and would return. Thanks
- Sarah, December 2021Marian “It’s been our first visit to Woodside, arrived to a lovely warm, spotlessly clean and well equipped cottage in a superb setting, so would definitely return.”
- Marian, November 2021Karen “The cottage is in a brilliant location but there are a few things that could really improve it.”
The hedging is beginning to obscure the views, the shower hose was broken and the mattresses on the single beds still need replacing!
- Karen, September 2021Harvey “We had an excellent holiday at the cottage.”
The views from the living room and bedroom were amazing, and it was nice to sit outside at the private garden table while the children enjoyed the mini woodland walk. The kitchen was well equipped, and the bird feeders outside the kitchen window attracted various interesting birds. It was very considerate that the holiday cottage company phoned us up to check that we were ok when there was a local power cut. We are hoping to return to the same cottage for another holiday soon. There are some improvements which could be added to the cottage, which would enhance our experience: A cafetière (most holiday cottages have one) Pegs (there was a washing line but no pegs) The drier had a fault. The door would not remain closed because the catch did not align with the square hole. This was overcome by pushing it back into alignment each time the door was closed. The back door was very stiff and the children were unable to open or close it. The shower hose was deteriorating. It was ok for us but looked as if it would not last much longer. These were not serious problems, but improvements that could be made. I hope you will send this feedback to the owner so that they can improve the cottage. We had a great stay and hope to come back to the same cottage again.
- Harvey, August 2021We are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday at our cottage. Thank you for the detailed feedback. It has been such a busy season that we have not stayed there since we reopened in April. There used to be a contemporary Bodum cafetière at the cottage, we will certainly replace it as it sounds like it has gone missing! The coloured clothes pegs are usually kept on the shelf in the drying room. This is the first time that we have heard of a problem with the drier. It sounds like we need a new one. We will investigate the problems with the back door and the shower hose - which is surprising as the shower unit is only three years old. Kind Regards, David and Judith, (owners) Property Owner
Anna “Woodside is a lovely little comfortable cottage with great views, the only downside was that the plumbing needs to be looked at as the taps are very noisy.”
- Anna, July 2021Viv “Wonderful ,homely, comfortable and clean cottage .”
Had everything we needed for our short stay .set in beautiful surroundings with stunning views. We hope to return again soon.
- Viv, June 2021Jenny “Cosy and clean with lovely atmosphere.”
After day walking in hills, was so good to know we were coming back to Woodside Cottage
- Jenny, May 2021Jane “Woodside is a gorgeous, homely cottage with a view.”
There was no wifi but a good selection of board games and classic DVDs, so it was great to spend time as a family in the evenings, instead of everyone glued to separate devices. Our monopoly game lasted four nights and our 12-year old boys couldn’t wait to get back to the game each night. It’s really convenient and easy to get into Keswick, so the location is great. We hired mountain bikes in whinlater forest, which I would really recommend. Hiked Scafell pike & Scafell, hellvelyn via striding edge & of course Skiddaw as you can see it from the cottage. We had a fabulous time and would recommend and will stay at Woodside again. I loved it.
