A shame that the rd was closed as it was a good 10minutes diversion, although I do realise that this was totally out of the property owners hands and will eventually be open. Disappointed that the hot tub was gone, as when we originally booked that was one of the reasons, although it's probably because of covid!. But altogether it's a lovely cottage with good clean accommodation, plenty of space for everyone and we all had a fantastic week. The pool table was enjoyed by all and a lovely welcome hamper on arrival, which was really appreciated, so thanks for that!

Situated in the heart of the traditional country town of Alston is this superb, stone-built cottage, Mill Race House. Alston is famed for being the highest market town above sea-level, offering scenic views, unique shops, inviting pubs, and the Heritage & Transport museum for a fantastic range of historical transport displays which provide an insight into the life gone by in this delightful town. Just outside the town, you can find a golf course, the Epiacum Roman Fort, and Killhope Lead Mining Museum which offer tours of an old mine. For those wishing to explore the area on two wheels, cyclists should take advantage of the Pennine Way which passes through the town and is also on the C2C Cycle Route. The surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty offers plenty of breathtaking waterfalls and scenic fells, including the nearby Cross Fell which is the highest peak in the area and offers views of the Lake District National Park. Take a day trip to the town of Penrith to explore the 14th century ruins of the castle, the local museum and the Thacka Beck Nature Reserve, as well as the shops, bars and eateries that the town has on offer. Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there.
