“The location is great.”

The lounge room space is smallish for three, but the property is priced accordingly. Linen, bathroom and kitchen were fine. The appliance instructions were helpful, especially for the washing machine.

“We found the property very cold on arrival and thereafter.”

There didn't seem to be any hot water for a bath and the shower wasn't exactly hot either. We had to get a maintenance person to come in and show us how to put the radiators on and hot water. Not ideal for people arriving tired and cold! I suspect the owner doesn't want to spend money on tenants' comfort, otherwise they would make the water and heating system more user-friendly.

“We had a thoroughly lovely stay here.”

The property is cosy, clean and well equipped. The beds were comfortable. There is a very spacious closet in the main bedroom which is ideal for storing away suitcases once unpacked which is a handy bonus. I was a little concerned about the parking situation before we arrived, but all was fine. We were able to park easily on the road using the provided permit. Another concern was how good WiFi would be, but it is absolutely fine. We were able to stream movies using the smart tv with no problems at all. The big bonus for us was the location. Being so close to the main hub of Ambleside gives you plenty of options for eating out and/or food shopping all within a 5 minute walk. There is a lovely cafe called Esquires which I would recommend for breakfast/lunch and they do amazing coffee. Plus the location being in Ambleside puts you in a great starting point for to explore other parts of the lakes during the day. I would definitely return here with no hesitation.

“A lovely clean cottage in a quiet road in Ambleside very close to all amenities yet away from traffic etc.”

. it is small but perfectly adequate for three people. Lovely views across to the mountains from the front room. The rooms are comfortable with everything you may need. If in the area again we wouldn’t hesitate to go there again. Parking is a short distance away but the car can be brought up for loading etc right to the door. It’s very useful and necessary to have the parking permit. The only thing we were surprised about was there was no basic soap either in the kitchen or bathroom. Just a basic thing in this post pandemic world.

A short stroll to the centre of Ambleside with a great selection of restaurants and shops. With many other locations just an easy car journey away. A great base for exploring the area.

“We really enjoyed our stay at Rydal View.”

The toilet flush was not good and often had to be flushed more than once which is a waste of water. Also we wouldn't have expected to buy hand-wash, washing up liquid, scourer and cloths when staying for a few days. Everything else was great.

“The property was very clean and tidy and had great views from the front windows.”

The kitchen though small was very well equipped and clean. For us and I suspect that for a lot of older potential guests, the bathroom facilities were the weak point in the cottage. For me to want to stay there again I would like to see the bath replaced with a full width shower. The shower unit is a very reliable make and worked well. However, the shower curtain was horrible and inescapable. The front garden could be made into a small seated area where guests could enjoy a drink or maybe read a book.

Only things that need improving are a double duvet rather than a single one on the single bed and a plumber just needs to sort the toilet drainage as it took a few flushes each time. Other than that brilliant place to stay and would cerrtainly come back.

“A lovely small cottage that is clean and has everything you need.”

Our issue is with the beds and bedding. The quilts on the beds were in desperate need of replacement. They were very dirty and covered with bad stains. The mattress on the double bed is also dirty and stained and has lost its comfort and trys to roll you out of the bed as the support has gone. The single bed was like lying on top of a jelly as there was a single mattress that has been placed on top of another matress both of which again had no support and were dirty and in desperate need of replacement. Very uncomfortable with very little sleep all week.

“Rydal View is in a great location being only a 5 minutes walk from the pretty Ambleside centre where you'll find plenty of places to get meals and a selection of shops.”

All of the lake District attractions are within easy reach of the cottage either by car, foot or the frequent open top bus service. The cottage doesn't have its own parking space but there's plenty of street parking (using the provided permit). We found the cottage warm, well equipped and comfortably furnished for 3 adults. If you like 5* luxury then book somewhere else but if you are looking for reasonably priced, good location and comfortable accommodation then Rydal View is perfect.

“Rydal View may be small but is perfectly formed for 3 adults.”

The accommodation is ideally suited as a starting point for all activities around the lakes, an easy stroll into Ambleside for our evening meal after a day out exploring, who would want to sit or watch TV with all that the district has to offer but had that been our choice the facilities certainly were there. Our only niggle and it's a small one is the water pressure, the shower doesn't stay at a constant temperature but we simply ran a shallow bath instead. Many thanks for a great stay.

Excellent quiet location, very clean, good facilities and useful parking permit. We did not recognise the property from the negative comments previously submitted. The only niggle was a rather noisy electric fire. We would be happy to book this cottage again.

“We were very concerned by the negative comments of some earlier reviewers.”

However either the feedback they gave was false or steps have been taken to rectify everything. Our stay (March 2022) found the property to be as described and very appropriate for our needs. We were only 2 adults and use to staying in relatively small properties. It would work with 3, though you might need to be creative / flexible with storage - yet this is far better than a mobile home or room in a b&b (for example). You would have to balance the overall size (pity Square metres is not stated for all properties) with price and the advantages such as location (Quiet but central), smart TV / wifi (I really wish I had ran a speed test) - but we did not notice any difference with what we are use to at home which is 65mbps.It was clean and comfortable and the parking permit was an essential that was much appreciated. We did not use the Washing Machine.

“This is a very convenient little house for Ambleside particularly if you come on public transport, being near to shops, cafes, small supermarkets and the cinema.”

It has a nice view of the mountains from the upstairs bedroom window. Since our visit in the spring a couple of things need rectifying which we have left a separate note about in the property but forgot to mention that the small freezer at the top of the fridge is currently completely iced up and unusable.

“1 Rydal View, Ambleside So, where to start.”

Disappointing to say the least. On arrival the cottage was disconcertingly small. Adequate for two but a bit of a squeeze for three (just as well the third member of our party was unable to travel with us). No garden to sit in and relax after a long day out in the hills. Just a communal yard at the rear which was less than attractive and not conducive to privacy, and a pocket handkerchief sized front area (I hesitate to call it a garden) filled with overgrown shrubs with no space to sit on a warm evening or have a barbeque. And inside? No welcome pack – well there was an already opened box labelled as a cleaning pack containing a couple of black bags and ironically given there is no dishwasher a small box of dishwasher tablets. Nothing else – no washing powder or soap. Not even soap in the bathroom. And just two toilet rolls – insufficient for two for a fortnight let alone three. Previous cottages we have booked for holidays at least had a basic set of amenities. There was not even anything left by previous occupiers – cans and packets etc. When we cleaned and prepared cottages for let as holiday accommodation in Cornwall we supplied sufficient toilet rolls for the stay, soap, washing powder, and basic foodstuff for use on arrival after a long tiring journey (bread rolls, butter, jam, milk, tea and coffee and sugar). And then there is the basic quality of accommodation – the lounge light still didn’t work (as reported by a previous reviewer) so I changed the bulb with the one in the small bedroom (and then that also failed later in the week so I swapped that for the one in the main bedroom), the coal effect bulb in the electric fire doesn’t work and only two of the four bulbs in the array in the kitchen work. The heater in the small bedroom which we tried to use to help dry clothes after washing couldn’t be made to work either (even with the heating ‘boost’ button applied). The tools and equipment in the kitchen were in a less than satisfactory state – for example the potato masher was encrusted with dried mashed potato and the tool for turning eggs etc in the frying pan was encrusted with someone else’s food. One of the mugs already had a broken handle (just in case you think it was us that broke it!) I felt I needed to wash everything up before even thinking about using it. Also as reported by a previous reviewer there was no indication of where to leave black bags of rubbish (there is no marked bin outside but I left it in a random bin that had space). There is no WiFi (as also previously reported) a basic amenity these days but being a BT broadband customer I was able to connect to a very weak mobile hotspot. The cottage seems to be maintained by Lakelovers (at least that was what was emblazoned on the towels and the information folder) and the defects may be their responsibility rather than Sykes but I would hesitate to book another cottage through Sykes if this is representative of their acceptable standard of quality. That having said we enjoyed the fact of being in such beautiful surroundings in the Lake District as a whole and made the most of our fortnight and the local shops and pubs!

Two little niggles - the kitchen windows were filthy and the lounge bulb went late at night on our last day but there were no spare bulbs. The biggest issue is the fact that there is no WiFi at the property and is the only reason we wouldn't stay at the cottage again.

It was a great location for the two of us, we felt sharing the downstairs space would have been a challenge with anyone other than a small child. It just felt as though the cottage lacked some TLC, a bush was growing over the back door, there was only one saucepan provided, there was no information regarding how to deal with the bins or recycling, at the end of the stay having initially thought the vacuum cleaner was broken we found the hose to be completely blocked . I appreciate it has been a challenging 18mths for anyone in the hospitality business, and i expect some weariness has crept in when the government guidance has been poor , late or just confusing.

“This cottage is in a perfect location.”

Right in the middle of Ambleside. Parking is on the road but we had no trouble finding a space and a permit was supplied. However there were a few things that could be improved, the main one being the provision of WiFi. Also there was only one saucepan provided plus a very large casserole. As the cottage is for only 3 people, this seemed odd.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away.
