The Lyth Valley is lush and laid back, riddled with picturesque walking and cycling routes and renowned as a peaceful landscape compared to busier Lake District self-catering destinations such as Bowness and Ambleside. The valley is set apart from Lake Windermere by a row of lower level fells, with plenty of opportunities to climb up high and soak up stunning lake views. You'll never be too far from attractions, evening entertainment and sophisticated shopping in Bowness village, with Windermere Golf Club also nearby. Also from Bowness, Windermere Lake Cruises depart to Ambleside and Lakeside. The Lyth Valley is also renowned for its scattering of high-class country pub restaurants, one of which stands only a stroll away from Highbeck Cottage. The Punchbowl Inn is one of the most widely-acclaimed Lake District gastropubs, nestling alongside a pretty old church.

About the location

Bowness-on-Windermere 5 miles; Kendal 6 miles.

Crosthwaite is a small village set in the picturesque Lyth Valley, famous for its damson trees, and boasts a lovely pub known nationally for its excellent food. The lakeside towns of Windermere and Bowness are nearby, with plenty of activities, interest and entertainment for all ages. Also within easy reach is the popular market town of Kendal, an historic Lakeland town with a fine reputation for shopping. Kendal nestles on the banks of the River Kent. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden, are nearby, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay.
