“The location of Bridge House is great for exploring the South Lakes and we found the swimming facility excellent.”

However, we felt the house was only superficially clean (cobwebs and spiders everywhere) and is certainly in need of renovation, especially in the bathrooms and kitchen. We got the impression that Bridge House is furnished with cast-offs - a miscellany of kitchen equipment and and the bedding has seen better days, with lumpy pillows and duvets along with rubbed, faded sheets and duvet covers. It would have been useful to have had a drying rack or washing line as the wall-mounted rack in the utility was useless as the room was so cold, despite the super, warm weather we had. Also, the provision of only one oven mitt made it well-nigh impossible to lift hot trays out of the oven without burning yourself.

“Bridge house was in a lovely position and it was definitely a bonus having the spa/hotel very close to us with complimentary access.”

On the whole, the property was comfortable and well equipped but there are a few points I feel I should mention. We did have a problem with the Wi-Fi which was tricky as one of a party was working from home for a fair part of the week. The owner did his best to sort this and kept in touch with us regularly to let us know the situation.We eventually had Wi-Fi on the Wednesday. Another point was that the specifications said there was a washer dryer. Unfortunately there was only a washing machine and with the inclement weather It would’ve been really useful to have had the dryer too. The last point, I thought I should mention is that although the Property came with a lovely secluded garden, including picnic bench, we were unable to use it due to it being tick season. Our dog received a few unwelcome visitors when we sat out the first evening. This obviously was not the fault of the owner, but it may be useful for anybody visiting to know this, and maybe come prepared with a tick remover! We had a lovely week and the property is well placed to visit all of the beautiful areas in the Lake District.

“This is my own personal opinion of Bridge House, I don’t normally like to leave negative reviews but feel I must on this occasion.”

Positives first The view is lovely and the cottage is very quirky. Now our experience Entrance to property very unwelcoming, not painted for a very long time. Kitchen - very dated, also unclean. I had to clean it before we could use the worktops. Lacking some basics - no bread bin and few other items Living room, steep steps into it which are mentioned in description. Furniture in keeping with cottage and good TV would say this was best room. There was a hole in carpet by fire but otherwise ok. Utility - wires although not live were hanging from ceiling not enclosed. Downstairs toilet: Shower room. - Needed a clean but generally ok. Didn’t use it so can’t comment on functionality. Upstairs is where I encountered the biggest problem, Bathroom- Rust around plug hole/ wouldn’t think of using the bath. Bedding- very old. Not ironed and made me not wanted to go to bed. On saying that the bed was comfortable. Wardrobes and furniture-well I didn’t use them the smell when you opened the doors was horrendous. Very musty and I wouldn’t have wanted my clothes in there. The house needs a lot of maintenance to be worthy of the 4 ticks that has been awarded by Skyjes cottages. Not sure how often they review their property ratings. As I have mentioned this is my experience and I know other people will have different opinions. I have given feedback to the owner and to Sykes cottages. I will be honest and say we did leave the cottage after the first night. It just wasn’t us. We Managed to find an alternative cottage which enabled us to enjoy our much needed break.

With the exception of the hole in the fireside rug and rust around the period bath plug, I do not accept your assertions. We have never had complaints on the points you raise and it is noteworthy that you didn’t contact me to discuss on arrival and in fact only communicated by text after you had left the property the following day. You therefore gave me no opportunity to address your concerns. We have an 81% overall score, with several 100% (see previous review on web site), which puts your 31% in context. Property Owner

“A lovely characterful house with 3 bedrooms and 3 sitting rooms: a dining room with farmhouse style table; a lounge with Woodburner; and a 'cosy' with 2 comfy chairs and good reading lights.”

It was a lovely warm house in the autumn, well kitted out. The location by the river meant you could hear a constant roar of water, and whilst working in kitchen there was the glorious view of the river, changing with the light. Recommend a trip on the railway and some of local walks - full details provided in house. Also took up offer of use of spa for a swim - a real bonus with the house.

“Spacious property with nice views over the river.”

Kitchen generally well equipped and access to washing machine and smart tv was great. Having enclosed garden also a positive. Didn’t use local hotel but facilities looked good. Due to the age of property the door frames are low and anyone 6ft or over will need to be vigilant moving through house, Due to steps and uneven floors, would not recommend to people with mobility issues. Car needed to get out and about - as shops, restaurants etc., are a drive away. You will need to bring things like cooking oil, condiments, tea, coffee, sugar, clothes washing sundries etc. as these not provided. Steam train, motor museum and escape room within walking distance if you’re happy to walk on roads. You see people white water rafting on river and looks fun.

“We had another wonderful stay at Bridge Cottage.”

We love the quirks of the cottage and it’s proximity to the river- it sounds amazing! The conservatory is a great place to have a cup of tea, read a book, watch the paddlers braving the white waters! The children thoroughly enjoyed using the swimming pool at ‘Cascades’ opposite every day. The cottage is a great base to visit places nearby too- we visited Barrow on Windermere and had a lovely boat trip and enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Magic Roundabout. The kids enjoyed the fantastic Beatrix Potter museum. We also went on the steam train at Haverthwaite, which was great fun. Booths is close by and it it’s a lovely supermarket. Thank you for another awesome stay at this gem!

“Great property.”

Yes, it's got some steps, but it's been wonderfully restored/renovated so that it has all the "mod cons", but they have to fitted in where space allows. We had a real sense of excitement exploring behind each door. We divide properties into 2 types - sterile modern boxes (do the job, but no surprises) and an historic building like this. We haven't stayed anywhere like this since our last trip to France - where we felt that the actual resident had been hurriedly evicted. The furniture is a good quality and the kitchen was well equipped. If you could make changes, perhaps provide a broom/dust pan. We tried to use the mop, but it made things worse. It would also good to have a teenager available to help the "elderly" to use the television. We managed to sign in for Netflix and Amazon, but despite our efforts, we're not sure if we signed out. Thank you.

“We liked the quirkiness of the cottage.”

Yes it was on different levels, but that added to the feel of an old cottage. We didn't notice the roar of the water once inside. We were kept warm by the log burner. The car parking area was adequate for 2 cars. Loved the heritage train passing the top of the garden. The motor was in easy walking distance and worth a visit. We could not find a hand brush which would have been usefull. The guidance for rubbish collection and recycling was vague. All in all we had a wonderful week. (10-17 Sep 22)

“Bridge House is a home from home holiday.”

The house has all the amenities needed for a self catering holiday and our designated contact was contactable when needed but was not intrusive. The waterfall was lovely to listen to - especially in the evenings. Our children (ages between 3yrs - 15yrs) loved playing in the garden and watching the steam train pass at the bottom of the garden. Another enjoyable stay at Bridge House.

One desire would be slightly firmer mattresses. Ample parking for 2 cars and made full use of the Cascades Spa as convenient as if you actually stayed in the hotel.

“We consider the advertisement of two parking spots false as there was barely a good spot for one car.”

The cottage was very dangerous, doesn't comply with health and safety standards. There are many trip hazards throughout the property. The shower was dangerous to get out of. The property is not suitable at all for children or elderly or slightly infirm. To be honest, the fit able bodied people in our party did not enjoy it because of how hazardous moving around the property is. 2 of us did hurt our feet on a small step from out one room because it's so hard to see. There were cobwebs everywhere. It was not the cleanest it could be but just acceptable enough to live in. The steps out the back door to the car parking spot were not suitable, uneven and lead straight onto the road which was on a bend so you if fell you could get run over whilst trying to get up. You'd be quite hurt to say the least just from the steps. It should be more obvious in the advertisement that this property is so unsuitable / has so many drawbacks to it. The place needs an assessment, review by a health and safety official.

Sorry to hear you were not happy with our cottage, but I take issue with your comments as follows: All other clients have found no difficulty parking two cars, with no problems raised. Indeed I have provided photos, when queried prior to booking. The 34 photos on the web site clearly show the layout and character of the property, to enable assessment of suitability for children or infirm adults. No concerns were raised or queried regarding safety when booking. Indeed no clients have raised H&S issues to date, or Sykes when the property was inspected. Your compliance comments in this regard are in your opinion and inconsistent with reviews by other clients, two recently giving a 100% score, though one published review did suggest people with mobility issues may struggle. I will refer your comments re cleaning issues to our contractor for their consideration. Property Owner

“Lovely old style traditional cottage in nice location.”

Good sized rooms with everything supplied. Living fire was great for cold nights but could supply more logs as we spent another £40 on logs etc. Some more information on local walks, things to do and most importantly, places to eat Cascades Spa over the road was great and had a nice spa day there. Would recommend to both couples and small families

We wanted somewhere cosy to spend half-term and this fitted the bill perfectly. I could have sat by the window and watched the river all night- I’ve been missing it since our holiday ended. Part of my heart has been left in the Lake District- we have booked the footage again for next year already :-)

You also need to supply a lot more feed back from customers about each holiday home. The beds where comfortable and the sheets and towels where clean and of a good standard.

“A quirky old cottage that was ok for us but people with mobility issues would struggle with the layout.”

Kitchen well equipped but would benefit from an upgrade. Dining room great. Downstairs shower room good. The lounge good with smart tv but could do with a leather sofa or two. Washer a bit small and no drying facilities other than a maiden to put in the conservatory, so a temporary line or rotary dryer in the garden would help. Bedrooms were great with plenty of storage. Dog friendly but a less mobile pet would struggle getting to the garden and a lively dog would need supervision with a few sharp drops and the railway at the top of the garden. Off road parking is a benefit but maybe the owners could find some way of getting to it without having to walk on the road would be helpful. We have two autistic adult children and while the road wasn't busy we still needed our wits about us to get to the car. Complimentary use of the leisure facilities at the Whitewater hotel is a massive plus for the cottage. Ideal for a base with access to the main road to Ulverston nearby and the Lakeside road leading to Hawkshead and beyond. Plenty of walks a short drive away if you don't want to brave walking on the roads. This is an old property with history so please allow for this, we are just a family here for seven days in a house with centuries of history.
