“I don’t really write reviews but feel on this occasion the need to.”

We booked this cottage because it’s ideally situated and has all the amenities listed we needed for our two week holiday. Online it looked absolutely perfect. When we arrived however, it soon became very clear that all is not as it seemed. First the dishwasher and the bottom oven didn’t work. The dishwasher kept tripping the main fuse. After I phoned, someone came out fairly quickly to take a look and said someone would come the next day to fix it. This didn’t happen. The oven (both) and ...

The oven (both) and baking sheets were absolutely disgusting, covered in a thick grimy layer of fat and grease. Obviously, no one had seen the necessity to clean it for quite some time. As we have dogs we always bring blankets with us to cover the furnishings, however here we used our blankets to cover up the sofas, which needles to say were also pretty rancid. As for under the sofas ….. I’m not even going there. The sink in the downstairs bathroom only drained extremely slowly and the shower leaked water all over the floor from beneath the shower tray. Mould in the upstairs bathroom, a hob extraction fan which was also filthy and didn’t work, a light bulb in the living room which was so dim you practically needed a torch to read anything, just topped off the whole experience. When I think how much we paid for the two weeks, I feel that the accommodation was well below par. The whole place needs a thorough deep clean and renovation. The cottage is completely booked out until December next year and obviously it is only given a very superficial, surface clean between guests checking out and in. It could be such a lovely place, with plenty of charm and character, perfectly situated for a holiday in the Lake District. I’m not usually very fussy, but there are things that I feel need to be said, when I think about the amount we paid.

About the location

NETHER WASDALE

Gosforth 3.9 miles; Santon Bridge 2.3 miles

Nether Wasdale is a small village situated to the west of Wastwater, the deepest lake in Great Britain. The village is well-served with two pubs, one with its own brewery, a farm shop and café selling local produce and ice cream. This area is the birthplace of climbing and is a superb base for climbing, hiking and all outdoor pursuits. Unlike many lakes, motorised boats are forbidden on Wastwater though canoeing and kayaking are perfect for these unspoilt and tranquil waters which add to the peace and serenity of this stunning part of the Lake District National Park. Wastwater is sided by The Screes and at the head of the lake the fells of Great Gable and Scafell Pike can be reached, popular with hikers and climbers alike. The view from the summit of Great Gable is said to be the finest view in Britain. At Wasdale Head is the church of St. Olaf, one of the smallest churches in England, dating back to 1550 and its beams are said to have come from Viking long boats. Close by are the villages of Santon Bridge and Gosforth.
