“This is our 2nd stay at 'Undercragg' and there is a reason people return time and time again to this property nestled in the Duddon Valley.”

It is a step away from life, no wi-fi, peace & quiet, relaxation, and our host, Sheila has thought of everything you possibly need. For us, it is a home away from home. There is a secure garden for the dogs, and for you to sit with a glass of something, or a cup of tea in the morning and take in the stunning views. Plenty of walks on the doorstep. We also visited Windemere, Hill Top House, Wray Castle, Tarn How, Coniston, Ulverston and Ambleside, but there is plenty more to see and do especially ...

We can't recommend this accommodation enough.

Peaceful location which might not be as suitable for those wishing to visit lots of attractions but if you love walking in the hills and along the river and enjoying the beautiful garden with a view to die for it’s for you! We absolutely love this unspoilt traditional cottage, original, historic, quirky and characterful as well as being comfortable (perhaps less so if you’re very tall as beams are low) We love it because it hasn’t been given the ‘anonymous’ holiday cottage makeover! Please don’t ever change a thing, it’s perfect! Lovely cottage in a gorgeous setting

It was in a wonderful quiet location and the property was very well and thoughtfully equipped. A highlight was hearing a cuckoo as soon as we arrived! The low beams were not a problem but I think the advert could also include the low doorways as well, just so that people know. All in all a really fantastic trip.

“A beautiful cottage in a beautifully remote location.”

Pictures simply don't do any of it justice. You couldn't want for anything in the cottage. Everything had been provided and more. Even down to spare batteries for the radio, heaps of torches and candles, a gas camping stove with lots of spare gas, flask, good stock of wood - so that anyone staying would be comfortable in the event of a power cut! Wine and cake awaited our arrival along with milk in the fridge. The location was stunning with walks and swims in the rivers and streams only a stones throw away. A pub a mile away that has wifi and excellent food and beer. An all round excellent experience.

“Delightful detached cottage in idyllic quiet setting.”

Lovely garden with great views, there was nothing nicer than watching ‘Sheep TV’ in the evenings after taking one of the many lovely walks straight from the cottage door. Very warm, cosy, lovely open fire. No mobile signal and no Wifi which was a plus as it all contributed to a totally peaceful and tranquil setting for a relaxing holiday.

It is situated in a particularly attractive and quiet part of the Lakes with the additional benefit of little traffic on the roads. However, perfectly possible to spend a week here without resorting to any further car travel.

“We got caught in storm Arwen and had no power or heating for four days but there was a single burner camping stove with several gas cylinders at the cottage so we could at least have hot water and food.”

Plus plenty of candles and batteries for the radio. There really is everything you could need provided. Very clean and comfortable, we will return.

Everything we needed was provided. The rooms were cosy and well furnished, and the enclosed garden was a great place for the dog to run around. The local pub is only a ten minute walk away and serves tasty food all day. All in all we really enjoyed our stay.

“We had a wonderful week at this lovely cottage.”

Very well equipped, beautiful gardens, clean and very cosy. We knew about the lack of Wi-fi and mobile signal and this was one of the reasons we booked this cottage. The only neighbours were the cows and their young in the field opposite. Perfect bliss for a whole week. There is a landline with a trust box if needed. Very friendly pub a short walk away serving tasty meals. Thank you for the treats and all the extras, the only issue we had was having to go home to reality!

The location is beautiful and quite remote in the peaceful Duddon valley. Many basics were supplied and a welcome pack of wine and cake was kindly provided. The only thing we didn't realise was that there is no Wifi or mobile phone signal but there is a landline you can ue with payment. We would definitely recommend this to guests looking for a relaxing holiday.

“We loved the cottage at Undercragg.”

Plenty of room for the four of us, (and two dogs) lovely furnishings, bedding and character with stunning scenery from every window and door. The home was well equipped with plenty of towels, toilet roll and cleaning products, soap and hand wash, with some essentials in the cupboards such as tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, etc. Lovely open fire, which was not really needed as we had gorgeous weather but we just had to light a fire when we were there. Quite a long, single track road in some parts to get to the cottage, but good fun. Lots of additional touches such as a bottle of wine and sponge cake on arrival to towels for the dogs. There is no phone signal or WiFi but that added to the relaxing holiday and not constantly checking emails etc. But there is a basic sky tv and DVD’s availability, along with CD player and radio. The gardens were stunning with plenty of tables and chairs. We would really love to come back to Undercragg in the future and would definitely recommend this beautiful cottage.

Our host Sheila welcomed us. The cottage is in a gorgeous setting and we loved the enclosed garden as our dogs were able to go off lead. Stunning views from the house, watching the lambs prance and leap around the field was lovely. The house is really comfortable and you have everything you need. There are plenty of walks on the doorstep with breathtaking views. Our stay was so peaceful, a breath of fresh air. The beams weren't a problem as others reviewed and we are all between 5ft 9' and 6ft 4' and we managed OK. Would highly recommend and we would love to return again.

The lounge suite was very saggy and would benefit from replacement. In all Undercragg is a lovely cottage, however, the lack of a dishwasher is sufficient for us not to consider returning. Although we were fully aware of this at the time of booking, we soon tired of the constant stream of washing up. Moreover, at this price level, and for a property set up for a family, this really should be provided - and there is plenty of room for one if the washing machine is relocated to the utility room.

It was a bit more expensive than we usually pick for just 2 of us, but was worth the extra for it’s fantastic location and comfort. We always look for dog friendly properties, which sometimes means a long list of rules and poorer quality of soft furnishings. Not in this case. We will book again!

it was most welcoming after a long journey. The cottage was SO beautifully presented inside, with great attention to detail, and very clean. there was extra condiments, sugar, coffee and tea, and even a well equipped sewing box. Watching the young calves ith there mothers jut a few feet away over the fence was beautiful.

This was more than made up for by the location and comfort. As sky tv is in the cottage I think the owners should consider installing WiFi. In this day and age it’s a bit like not having electricity. Apart from that it’s perfect.

I have wanted to go back ever since but I knew it ceased to be a holiday cottage in around 1982, so I never thought I would get the chance to return. I cant tell you how thrilled I was to discover it is once again available to rent! And it is just as beautiful and peaceful as I remember it! My husband, children and I had a really lovely week there and it thoroughly lived up to and exceeded our expectations, from the cleanliness to the wonderfully comfortable beds, from the cake and wine on arrival to the very well stocked cupboards - everything was thought of. It is an amazing cottage in an amazing place.

Only two comments about improvement: a tumble dryer really should be available (especially if you are staying for more than a week) - and a dishwasher would be a real bonus! Who likes to spend holiday time washing up?! Apart from that, this is a generously equipped and lovely place - and so clean!

Quiet and peaceful surroundings. Cottage is spotless and well stocked. The owner has thought of everything. Walks from the front door and within walking distance to a lovely local pub that serves good food and ale, about a 20 minutes walk from there is a post office and small convenience store. I would say this cottage is underestimated in description and photos. Maybe thats a good thing!

There are some beautiful walks straight from the front door, the rocky walk along the river is not to be missed provided you don't mind a bit of a scramble. “As always we enjoyed the peace and solitude that this cottage offers due to its location and this is our third visit in five years however we were disappointed to find that the shower door still leaks, making the carpet wet.”

This meant that the bathroom had a really bad smell and has put us off booking this place in the future until it is sorted out. The note on the window sill saying sorry wet carpet implies that it’s the fault of the previous occupants and it hasn’t had time to dry out. Time to rip it out and put some tiles down, carpet in the bathroom is very unhygienic.

Very secluded and you really don’t get any service for miles, so a complete break from the outside world. The location is fantastic with incredible views and plenty of walks on the doorstep. Very dog friendly which we loved. The Newfield Inn served some lovely homemade meals definitely worth a visit and just 5-10 minute walk down the road. This cottage and holiday has everything we could have ever asked for.

“We had a fantastic week.”

Stunning location out in the wilds.......... just what we like. The Autumn colour was stunning in the Duddon Valley and surrounding fells. The cottage was wonderful, loved the low beams and the window seats. Even though it was cold outside (10 degrees) we were warm inside. The open fire was a real treat and brought back childhood memories of lighting fires with grandparents!! The garden was lovely and the dogs loved running round playing chase. All the rooms were comfortable and the amount of equipment supplied was just amazing........thanks Shelia for thinking of all eventualities!! Oh and the coffee cake provided was delightful - being my husbands favourite cake and thanks for the bottle of wine. We think the description.......... calling the upstairs WC an ensuite to one of the single bedrooms - would be much better if it was just called a separate upstairs WC.

“I was particularly looking for a cottage that was tucked away in the middle of nowhere, with excellent walks from the doorstep and had a warm cosy feel with an open fire.”

This cottage exceeded my expectations and I had a lovely time here. The kitchen was well-stocked, there was firewood, kindling and coals provided, the rooms were warm and the beds are comfortable. The living room was cosy with nice views out of the windows and the walks from the cottage were great: rivers, glades, rock formations, crags and up through woodlands into the open fells. I didn't see anyone whilst I was there (except tiny spots in the distance)! I will be coming back!

We have never seen such a well stocked "home." The owner obviously loves her home and ensures that visitors are catered for in every way possible. It was quiet, just how we like it, yet only 10 minutes from one of the best pubs in the Lake District. I honestly couldn't find fault with anything at all. We loved every minute and would definitely recommend it to anyone seeking peace and tranquility. LOVED IT!

It was fantastic, the cottage, the location, the peace and quiet, the pub down the road after a hard days walking, the dog friendly nature of the cottage. The welcome pack of the cake, wine, milk, tea bags, everything that you could want was there. We really didn't need to take anything! Totally secluded and peaceful, in stunning surroundings. There was a pleasant country pub less than a mile away and loads of great local walks for the dogs. The garden was large and securely fenced and there was ample parking for a few cars. We will definitely be back!

About the location

BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS

Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.

Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.
