About the location

DEARHAM

Cockermouth 5 miles; Bassenthwaite Lake 15 miles; Keswick 19 miles.

The small country village of Dearham is in the borough of Allerdale, just five miles from Cockermouth on the western fringes of the Lake District National Park. Dearham has a thriving community, with four public houses including The Old Mill Inn and The Ploughman, a Post Office/village shop, a fish and chip shop, a hairdresser, a petrol station and a locally renowned pie shop - The Cottage Pie. The countryside offers dramatic panoramic views across this constantly changing landscape to the Loweswater Valley and mountains beyond, including imposing Grassmoor. The nearby rugged coastline of the Solway Firth is within a short drive, and the dramatic coastal route south to Ravenglass and beyond is one of the more scenic and peaceful journeys in the UK. The nearby market town of Cockermouth is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame), with Wordsworth's Georgian family home, set on the main street, now a popular visitor attraction owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth boasts a variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, with the area renowned for the beautiful scenery and superb walking in the northern lakes around Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
