Staycations…we’re thrilled that they’re here to stay.

This year, staycations across the UK are set to contribute an estimated £28 billion to the UK’s economy. A staggering amount that solidifies how popular UK breaks are.

Our research has shown that over half of Brits are very interested in staycations this year, and are more likely to book a UK trip than one abroad.

Our parent company has seen a 31% uplift in bookings for Summer this year compared to the previous year. With all that the UK has to offer, it’s easy to see why Brits will take 3 UK breaks this year on average. How many have you got planned so far?

The Lakes leads the way:

It has come to no surprise to us that Cumbria and the Lake District is in the top 5 most popular locations for a 2023 staycation. Cumbria has ‘beat’ other popular locations such as Devon into the top 5. The Lake District is also set to be a top destination this Winter.

May bookings for 2023 are also going to bring a strong footfall to the Lake District. Of UK destinations, Cumbria has 3 out of the top 5 locations for May half term bookings: Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick all made it into the top 5. With so much to offer: historical sites, incredible hiking and also a coast line, it’s easy to see why the Lakes is a top destination.

Consumer trends:

Self catering is popular with consumers, our data shows that 54% of respondents prefer their UK holiday to be in self catering accommodation. This is often due to it being more budget friendly for families and also offers a more spacious living area.

People also want to take the opportunity to holiday with their dog. Dog friendly bookings are higher than previously with lots of our guests wanting to bring their four legged friend along for an adventure. 34% of bookings so far for 2023 are bookings with pets. Making your property pet friendly is likely to lead to a fuller calendar with more bookings.

Luxury amenities continue to be favoured by holidaymakers. Hot Tubs are still popular as ever, with bookings for properties with hot tubs up 104%. After a long day hiking and exploring in the Lakes, a hot tub is the perfect way for guests to relax.

Trending areas:

Solo travellers are also enjoying staycations, with Keswick leading the way as the number one location for solo travellers. Keswick has much to offer such as the bustling town with regular markets and of course the incredible walking trails.

The Lake District has always been an incredible location to our team, however it is growing in popularity with more generations wanting to explore its beauty. On TikTok, the hashtag #LakeDistrict totalled 359 million views. The hashtags for locations in Windermere, Keswick and Ambleside were also the top three locations within the Lakes viewed by users.
