With October half term quick approaching, you must be wondering where September went. As we head into the cooler months you may be wondering what’s on offer for the family in the Lake District during the wonderful autumnal weeks in October. Well, you don’t have to go far; there are so many things to do in the lakes that you’ll wonder why you ever went abroad on holiday. Read on for some great October half-term holiday ideas.
First, you’ll need a place to stay. But imagine the hassle of taking the kids to a hotel! Do they get their own rooms? Do you sleep all in one room as a family? What about getting everyone ready to go down to breakfast in the morning? And then ready for the day? What a lot of fuss and hassle, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Lakelovers has a huge collection of self-catering cottages in the Lake District to suit any sort of family or group. You can even bring the dog along, as we have plenty of dog-friendly accommodation available. You’ll have as much time as you need to get the kids ready in the morning. With no fussy hotel manager telling you that breakfast is only served until 8am and that’s final. You can even make sandwiches for the day’s outing.
And how to fill those crisp days? Our first Lake District attraction is one for the animal lovers out there; there are plenty of great, fun things you can do in the Lakes. Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is a wonderful attraction for anyone who loves big cats, with their incredible glass tunnel allowing you to get up close to the main attraction; a pair of snow leopards. The male, Pavan is even a movie star – he was one of two leopards used in the filming of The Golden Compass (which means he’s met Daniel Craig, lucky guy).
If that’s not enough brilliant animal entertainment for you, there’s also the South Lakes Wild Animal Park. This is a great interactive day out where you can hand-feed giraffes and get personal with the penguins and other animals.
If you’re looking for something a bit different another one of the best attractions in the Lake District is one the whole family can enjoy – why not check out the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway? An excellent opportunity for some education disguised as a fun day out – for ideas, there are some good resources on the website. During October half term, be sure to check out their spooky Witches and Wizards Week events.
At the Lakeside end of the railway, you’ll be so surprised at the variety of things you can do there that you won’t want to get the train back until the end of the day. You have the option of continuing your journey across the water with Windermere Lake Cruises, and can even buy combined tickets to save money. The boat cruise is a great experience and takes you through some beautiful lakes scenery.
As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the Lakeside Aquarium. Home to some of the cutest mammals in Britain, otters. They also do very important fund raising work for conservation charities there. So it’s a great venue for the ethically minded day tripper.
With all these options, and tons more, you should have no problem keeping the kids entertained during the half term holiday. For younger children (or nostalgic big kids) there’s the Beatrix Potter Attraction. There’s even an option for the surly teenager; loads of holiday cottages with wi-fi access in the heart of the Lake District.
If you’re stuck for half term holiday ideas then head over to Lakelovers. You’ll be amazed at what you can find to see and do right on your doorstep!
