The property

Salvin Cottage presents a characterful three storey retreat in the centre of Alston, Cumbria, offering an inviting base for families or friends eager to explore the North Pennines with the River South Tyne, the Lake District National Park and a selection of local amenities all within easy reach.

Arriving in the heart of the town and parking nearby, the charm of the traditional stone exterior immediately stands out, with the cottage positioned just a short stroll from the shop, the welcoming pub and the river that threads through the landscape.

Stepping inside, a small porch provides a handy space for outdoor layers and walking boots before you move through to the sitting room where sofas, an armchair and a mounted TV create a pleasant setting for evenings spent winding down with a film, a game or a good book.

A few steps take you up to the kitchen and dining area where the air fills with the scent of cooking as you prepare meals, brew tea or lay out breakfast while chatting at the dining table that encourages relaxed mealtimes.

Climbing the carpeted stairs brings you to a landing with a sitting area that forms a quiet spot for reading or an unhurried morning drink before you enter the first double bedroom which includes a TV, soft carpeting and an armchair that adds a thoughtful touch for restful moments.

The en suite walk in shower room offers a refreshing start to the day with its heated towel rail and well arranged features, while the main bathroom on the same floor provides the choice between a warm bath or a shower over after time spent outdoors.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
