The property

Thimble Hill is a delightful cottage in Wreay near Carlisle, enjoying a scenic rural setting with off-road parking and far-reaching views over countryside and woodland.

It’s the kind of place that encourages everyone to slow down, whether you’re stepping straight into the wraparound garden for fresh air and patio moments, or settling in with a book while the landscape does its quiet magic beyond the windows. Inside, there’s a strong sense of space, making it well suited to family breaks and get-togethers with friends.

The sitting room feels made for together-time, especially when the woodburning stove is glowing and the evening turns into a relaxed round of conversation and board games on the Smart TV.

When the group wants options, the snug offers a second place to unwind, with patio doors that open the house out to the garden and let the outdoors become part of the day. The kitchen/diner is set up for proper holiday cooking, anchored by an electric AGA oven and hob and supported by the essentials for self-catering.

Gather at the dining table for unhurried breakfasts, picnic planning, and big shared suppers, then drift back outside if the weather calls for meals in the open air while the garden becomes a playground for children and a social hub for adults. Wreay village features a medieval church and conveniently located close to the M6, a short drive from Carlisle Racecourse and 40 minutes from the Lake District, and with the beautiful Solway Coast and Hadrian's Wall easily reached, there is much to explore.

The vibrant city of Carlisle has the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, while younger visitors will be delighted with Walby Farm Park.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Armathwaite is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley and the lovely coastline of the Solway Firth. The village has two old pubs, both with popular restaurants serving excellent food, a village Post Office and a traditional village shop. The River Eden runs through the centre of the village, and the area is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing, plus walking, canoeing and climbing. Armathwaite Castle, by the river, is a four-storey Pele Tower, and the 15th-century church has fine examples of stained glass windows. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring. The local railway station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and where today many old steam trains still wend their way through some of the finest countryside in Britain. The Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith is the "largest grass covered building in the country" or you might like to visit Dalemain Historic House, featured in a television production of Jane Eyre. The town is within reach of the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing guests with many mountain biking, hiking, and birdwatching opportunities.
