“Ellwood House is an absolute gem of a holiday retreat, one that I would recommend to anyone.”

Caldbeck itself is a quiet village with an excellent pub that provides good, reasonably priced meals. There is also a good local shop and an excellent cafe, as well as a number of other commercial outlets. Ellwood House is just a short walk from all of these, and is an extremely well appointed house that gave us a very comfortable and enjoyable week away in what we found to be the most picturesque but least tourist orientated part of the Lake District. The front of the property opens directly onto the road, but this wasn't a problem as there is very little traffic anyway. Noise was never an issue, and we only really used the back door anyway as this led out to the reasonably enclosed garden, (although the fence was not quite high enough to be crazy border collie proof), and the large parking area. The house itself was fabulous. Downstairs comprised a decent and well equipped kitchen with the door out to the garden, and a large and equally well equipped joint lounge/dining area. Half way upstairs was the bathroom, then one bedroom that was higher than the bathroom but lower than the other two bedrooms. Mezzanine heaven, but it gave the property a really interesting vibe that we really liked. There are walks direct from the property, with High Pike well worth a go on a clear day. A comfortable drive gets you to Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwent Water, Ennerdale, Loweswater, Crummock Water and Buttermere, all of which are quite spectacular. Dodd Wood (near Bassenthwaite), is well worth the hike to the top for its views over Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite Lake. I found Stuart (the owner of Ellwood House) to be exceptionally helpful and friendly, as well as being attentive enough to make us feel welcome and looked after without being overbearing. If you are looking for a quality stay in an excellent property located in a less frequented, tranquil and picturesque part of the Lake District, then I would recommend Ellwood House without any hesitation. We certainly hope to return some day.

About the location

CALDBECK

Wigton 7.5 miles; Carlisle 12 miles; Keswick 16 miles; Cockermouth 17 miles.

The charming Cumbrian village of Caldbeck is situated on the northern fringes of the Lake District National Park and is surrounded by beautiful moorland and fells. It’s a classic stone built village with a church, pub, village green and duck pond. The church dates back to the 12th century and is famous for being the resting place of the renowned huntsman John Peel. Although in every sense a ‘traditional working village’, the local craft centre at Priest Mill and the riverside walks to the Howk gorge, draw visitors to Caldbeck. The village is an ideal base for the northern Lakes, the market town of Keswick, as well as Lakes Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. The natural beauty of the Solway coast, well-known for its golf courses and the town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth are close by, whilst also within driving distance is the cathedral city of Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Borders.

If you require the super king double to be made into a twin - please advise at the time of booking.
