Holemire Barn

This was the second time we have stayed at Holmire Barn and as before we had another lovely stay, the cottage is clean, tidy and very comfortable, with all the amenities that we required.

The cottage sits in one of the quieter areas of the Dales but still with plenty to do with Whinlatter Forest Park up the road and the Lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater a short distance down the dale.The owner is very friendly and helpful.

Ideal for a solo traveller.

Comfy bed in dark room downstairs and lovely light filled room with skylights to sit in upstairs. Although there are no views out to the countryside you can throw open the double glass doors and watch the birds on the feeders from the comfy sofas. Cottage was lovely and warm with plenty of hot water. A bath was a plus after walking all day. Friendly host lives next door if needed. I always got parked in the lay-by over the road to cottage (room for 3 cars) in May. Remember to bring your own oil, salt, coffee etc. Microwave available and freezer available. Cottage has a lovely feel to it and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Holemire Barn is beautifully fitted up with every modern convenience.

It is warm, comfortable and relaxing and close to the Wheatsheaf pub where the food is excellent. Our main disappointment was the lack of a view from the upstairs window, and the bird feeder that provides the entertainment remained unfilled after our first day. The weather was wetter than we have ever known it after 40 years of autumn holidays in the Lorton valley and there was nowhere to dry wet clothes that couldn't go in the dryer but these are not huge issues, simply comments.

Lovely barn set in a beautiful location. Ideal spot for exploring the Lakes.

This converted stable is a good property for one couple.

It is situated in a timeless Lake District village. We were glad to have brought a fan with us to stay cool in the upstairs living area in July. The owner lives in the adjacent property and she was very helpful, especially in replenishing the bird feeder which attracted large numbers of finches of various sorts.

Excellent equipment in the kitchen.

Lovely outlook over the garden. Property owner friendly and available. Great base for walking the fells around Buttermere. Parking in layby opposite property, but a space always available.

Lovely cottage in a quieter part of the Lakes.

We enjoyed watching the birds at the bird table and the visiting squirrel. Very well equipped and comfortable.

We enjoyed our stay at Holemire Barn apart from the fact that my husband was ill for a couple of days but that had nothing to do with the cottage.

Just a couple of suggestions...we think that a more comprehensive folder of all the details needed for the cottage eg heating, washing machine, etc would be good. Perhaps in easy line of sight when you first go into the cottage. Maybe on the coffee table. Details were available but we only came across them bit by bit. Also details of eateries, attractions etc could be kept up to date and in a folder together. Angela and her dog Honey were very welcoming and helpful.

Spent a very enjoyable week at Holemire Barn.

Just 15 minute drive to Buttermere and the hills and lakeside walks. The cottage was an ideal place for my solo trip, clean and comfortable and had everything I needed for a week of self-catering. Lovely garden and Angela, the owner, was very welcoming and friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Great place to stay off the beaten track in the quiet village of Lorton.

We had a great stay in Holemire.

It was a good location for the activities we wanted to do.The weather was kind to us which meant we were able to do all we had planned. So nice to have a window on to the bird feeders and to see the red squirrel.

Lovely cosy barn set in a beautiful location.

Very quiet and peaceful. Great place to relax after a day's walking and visiting the great places the Lakes have to offer. Great to watch the different birds feeding from the window. Would highly recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our sta.

It is a charming, comfortable, clean and well-maintained dwelling. The only problem we had was with the power shower, which sometimes switches to cold during a shower, or fails to heat the water upon start-up. This may just be a temporary maintenance issue but apart from this minor inconvenience, we would thoroughly recommend Holmire House Barn.

Enjoyed my stay.

Very comfortable. Lovely to see so many birds and Red Squirrel out of the window in the garden.

Although my stay was okay l had concerns ● on arrival I was kept at the gate in the rain, with the owner stood in her doorway and the dog at the gate barking at me , despite 2 phone calls to say my ETA would be later than first thought.

I could have been told then that the key was in the property door and I wouldn't have been left in the rain. ● builders arrived for 2 days ● parking was across the road in a small lay-by ( 2 cars) and it was a bus stop. ● a welcome pack/ information pack would help as I only had an A4 poster on the door, behind the blinds, to inform me of bins ect ● kitchen bin was totally inadequate On the plus side the juliet balcony was great !

The location is ideal for walks around the Lakes and fells with beautiful locations near the barn. It’s my second visit here and it won’t be my last the barn has everything you need for a stay in the Lake District ❤️

Holemire Barn is wonderful, it’s clean and tidy and has all the facilities you need for a romantic self catering getaway.

It’s ideally placed for walking the Northern Fells, some you can do from the cottage. There is a lovely pub and great little shop within walking distance. The cottage is warm and welcoming and the upside down living is great for watching the birds and other wildlife in the garden. I would highly recommend this property and will definitely be visiting again.

Holemire barn is an idyllic little holiday getaway.

It provides an absolutely beautiful base location to explore the lakes and I would recommend it to anyone. We absolutely loved it.

really comfy and cosy, exactly what i needed after a days hiking. all the facilities needed including birds next to the window!

A comfortable cottage in a wonderful location.

Local shop and pub within easy walking distance and plenty of places to visit. This was our first visit to this part of England and we were most impressed.

I would highly recommend Holemire Barn for its location, and warm welcome from owner Angela and Honey xx.

The Barn has everything needed and a bed to die for....if i could take it home i would have!! Will be here a again next year.

A lovely peaceful place to relax fairly central to Keswick and cockermouth.

Nice to sit and watch all the different birds on the feeders.

We had a lovely week staying at Holemire Barn.

It was very peaceful looking out from the lounge watching the birds and the red squirrels feeding. The owner is lovely and was a great help in supplying us with local knowledge. We have visited the Lakes many times but this was our first stay in the Lorton Vale area. Only two downsides, firstly there is no onsite parking. The description "offroad" parking is inaccurate, as parking is actually on the road, on a slip road area at a T junction opposite the cottage, (it is not a layby, see it on street view). This should be amended in the Sykes Cottages description. Secondly, whilst there is a bench to sit on outside the front door, there is no private outside seating. However, these were minor issues which did not detract from a lovely stay. We would certainly consider going back.

Cottage was in a lovely setting.

The lady who owns it lives in the property on the main road. This is just behind it and up the lane a little. . I did find the oven difficult to use even with instructions not your normal electric oven. Wasnt a problem as so hot all week. We lived mainly on salads. . The birds in the garden are lovely. A bird feeder hangs on a tree outside the glass doors. Enjoyed watching and listening to them. . No squirrels that we saw while there. It's a lovely base for a holiday with everything we needed .

A comfortable holiday cottage in a beautiful area, Helpful owner.

The cottage is a great property for a couple seeking a getaway, and has all the essentials.

The quiet village location is perfect for exploring the northern Lakes, and is best suited to those who want to avoid the crowds, and traffic in nearby Keswick. You can explore directly from the cottage, or take a short drive to the nearby better known treks starting at Loweswater or Buttermere.

I enjoyed my week at Holemire Barn.

It is in a nice location and is convenient for a number of local tourist attractions. I climbed several Lake District mountains, cycled to Buttermere and Loweswater in the evenings and along the Solway Coast one day. I also did a long day trip to Vindolanda & Housesteads on Hadrian's Wall. They are both about an hours drive from the cottage. The only issue I had was that there is no mobile phone signal. However, the land lady does provide WIFI which helps mitigate this.

An enjoyable stay.

Friendly owner. Barn is compact but comfortable for two people. Creative design, with large picture windows looking out at lots of birds on a bird feeder outside the main window. Great base for walks and peaks around Crummock Water and Buttermere.

lovely location and host, Angela made us feel very welcome and her little dog always welcomed us home.

The bird feeders outside the balcony window kept us entertained all week , perfect location everything you would need within a 30 mile radius superb walking country. the cottage was very comfortable although , because of location dont expect good internet connections

Angela and the beautiful Honey made us feel at home. A cottage for 2 beautifully furnished very comfortable. You would not realise from outside that this Barn is upside down which makes it more special. Everything you need for a relaxing break. Lots of places to visit nearby.

Perfect cottage for the two of us, very comfortable and lovely quiet location.

It was a great base for exploring NW Lake District and we were out every day walking. We holiday in the Lakes a lot and would definitely stay at Holemire Barn again.

Tucked out of the way, we missed it the first time passed but that wasn’t a big issue!

Lovely landlady who knocked to introduce herself & kept the bird feeders well stocked - mesmerising to watch the birds from the Juliet balcony!

Good location.

Relaxing to watch the birds, squirrels and rabbits in the garden. Kitchen area is a limiting, but we ate out mostly. Owner was very friendly and helpful. No private parking, but parking in the lay-by across the road worked OK.

Great location with so many great walks just short drives away.

This cottage is in a delightful spot, tucked away from the road, and sheltered.

All our needs were met, particularly being warm, and having entertainment from the birds which come to the feeders outside the upstairs sitting room. Comfortable bed and chairs. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and can think of no criticisms!

The cottage was superb.

Extremely comfortable, well equipped and very roomy. A really comfy bed, so a good nights sleep every night. It was in a lovely location, very quiet. Great access to many different walks. The owner of the cottage was very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic location.

Loved the window that overlooked the bird feeding stations. A constant flow of garden birds. Only negative was the funny tasting water.

Lovely cosy cottage.

Angela the host was great. The lounge was upstairs and bed room downstairs and there was plenty of space for the 2 of us. We saw 20 species of bird from the lounge window over the week. We did several day walks from the cottage and drove down to Buttermere to climb Red Pike and nearer up Grasmoor. The village shop 1/2 mile away stocked lovely home made bread and other basic items and Cockermouth 4miles had a big supermarket. The Lorton valley was peaceful and quiet. We will certainly return.
