“A charming, cosy and well equipped cottage in a great location.”

We missed that no towels are provided for guests. Our fault of course, but in our experience it’s unusual and we could have done without the drive to Penrith to purchase towels. The bedding is getting a little thin and faded, the chair cover in the living room is crumpled and untidy and the soft furnishings and linens throughout are about ready to be replaced to improve the overall comfort and presentation. There was also a general feeling of clutter such as random items stacked in the corner ...

“Nice house in beautiful area, perfect base for long walks .”

The only complaint we have is the quality/ size of the beds ( too small for tall Dutch people ) and no smart tv which would be nice on rainy days to keep the children happy . Nonetheless we enjoyed staying here very much !

“Superb property.”

Very clever use of space in what looks like a small property. Good walking in a much quieter location than Glenridding. Arrival instructions need a caveat :- Arriving from the South, the right turn into the lane is very tight. Better to overshoot, U-turn in the layby to the North, come back and turn left. If arriving at night, park and walk down with a torch to have a look - Lake District stone walls are unforgiving. Coming out, turn right using the mirror.

“Beautiful cottage in stunning location.”

Truly one of the nicest we have stayed in. It was incredibly warm and cosy. So lovely to return to of an evening. Our bed was super comfortable and I loved waking up and stepping onto the terrace to see the beautiful fells. Fabulous walks straight from the door. You can avoid the main road by taking a path that leads to Patterdale. There was just one thing that made us feel uncomfortable though and that was the Deer Antlers hanging above the fireplace. As lovers of nature and the animal kingdom we didn't really appreciate this. I think a nice picture hanging there in its place would be in better taste. On another minor note we were a little surprised that there was no welcome pack of even a small jug of milk and some sugar. These are just essentials that most people provide. After a long 6 hour drive this sort of gesture would have been greatly appreciated. We would love to return to this cottage but morally could not if the Deer Antlers remain in place.

Access to the drive and the bathroom off the main bedroom should be highlighted because both are very awkward. Anyone with mobility issues would struggle with the bathroom.

Quirky layout and an amazing use of space. A wonderful location for hillwalking. When driving in, particularly in the dark, park in the layby 100 m N of the lane and walk in to check entry. It's rather tight turning in from the South.

“Another excellent stay.”

Thank you. We were last here three years ago - arrived Friday afternoon - by teatime Mr Johnson had closed the pubs and restaurants - on Tuesday we were told the leave and go home. Much has changed since then - locally, nationally and internationally. It is a shame to see the demise of the Patterdale post office/shop where Wainwright sold the first of his guidebooks. Shame also that the White Lion has fallen on hard times - it was only open for one afternoon during our two week stay. Hopefully it will return to former glory. Glenridding survives with some vibrancy. Although we are in these changing times it was so good to see that Beckside retains the same quality and appeal as it did on our first visit in 2008. Would still highly recommend this unique cottage.

“This is a lovely cottage and we have stayed on numerous occasions both winter and summer, the only comment we have is that it would be handy to have a couple of pint glasses as there are no glasses big enough to take a full can of drink and we prefer not to drink from the can or part pour as this does not work well for some drinks.”

We are wise to this having stayed in many self catering cottages and usulaly take at least one with us.

“Lovely cottage in a great location and overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.”

Whilst we didn’t eat in (apart from breakfast) the accommodation was adequately equipped although whilst acknowledging the limited outside space (& room for storage) the outdoor furniture could maybe do with a bit of an upgrade. Also we felt that there was too much ‘clutter’ (for us) in the cottage, but not a particularly big deal + lots of flies … All in, though, really good; thank you.

To look out of the windows and see the fells in every direction was magical.we will defiantly be back, this was our fifth stay in Cumbria and defiantly the best.

“We have visited the cottage eight times over the past years and have always been very pleased with the accommodation.”

However it does appear that, this time and on our last visit in July 2021, the cleaning standards have slipped a little. There was a scheduled all day power cut on the Thursday of this visit about which we were not informed.This rather upset our arrangements for a special day out; not being able to wash before going out and not knowing at what stage the power would be restored.

also when the central heating starts up you can smell the oil fired boiler . but besides that it met all our requirements and the location is perfect . We wouldn't hesitate in returning to the property for another holiday .

“Sixth visit to the cottage; this was our first time in summer so it was really nice to be able to use the beutifull garden.”

We have previously always found the cleaning of the cottage to have been to a very high standard unfortunately on this occasion we found the toilet and waste bin in the master bedroom had not been cleaned. Dishwasher out of order. We have recommended friends to the cottage who have booked for September and we have booked our winter break for November. We hope the usual high standard of cleanliness will return.

“The only issue we had was there should have been a blue refuse bag for rubbish - these are apparently left by the council on a Fri morning for the following weeks occupants.”

A neighbour kindly gave us one (the council won't take anything other than the Eden Council blue bag refuse). We waited for the bin men on the morning of departure and left 2 bags for the next occupants - so not sure what had happened the previous week. Its only a small issue but an important one. All in all it was a great place to stay with excellent facilities.

The property

Dating back to 1880 this former farm worker's cottage later became a photographer's studio and has been lovingly restored with 21st century comforts in mind. It offers picturesque holiday accommodation in one of the most beautiful Lake District valleys - Lake Ullswater is just over a mile away for lake cruises and boat hire. The fine walking around the surrounding high fells includes Helvellyn, St. Sunday Crag and the High Street Ridge and there are numerous valley rambles in the immediate area. Patterdale village has a well stocked local shop and a pub for bar meals etc. Accommodation: The cottage stands in its own enclosed garden bounded beyond the wall on one side by the tumbling waters of Deepdale Beck and with views to the hills around. The split-level interior has its entrance into the dining kitchen with hanging space for your outdoor gear. Several steps lead up from the kitchen to the comfortable beamed sitting room with pitched ceiling and feature stone wall, (TV with Satellite Freeview, DVD, free wi-fi and radio/cassette). French window to outside steps. There are two bedrooms - a twin on the lower floor reached down a few steps and with an adjacent bathroom (bath with hand-held shower, basin and wc), and a master double en-suite, on the same level as the kitchen with a few narrow steps down to its bathroom (large shower, basin and wc). French window out to little bedroom patio. The cottage is cosy in all seasons with a real eye for detail, attractively furnished with carefully chosen colours and fabrics. Slate floor in the kitchen, tiled bathrooms and fitted carpets elsewhere. Outside: Ample parking in the gravelled drive. Large patio area with garden seating and fine views of the Hartsop Fells. About the location

ULLSWATER

Ullswater is generally considered to encompass three major villages. This includes Glenridding at the south and Pooley Bridge at the north. The second largest lake, at approximately 7.5 miles wide, Ullswater is often regarded as the most beautiful lake in the district. There is dramatic mountain scenery to the south, as well as the gentle hills of the north. This region is popular among walkers, climbers and cyclists of all levels of ability. There are various water sports for all abilities too and lots of family activities. Along with historical sites of interest, Ullswater has a strong nautical history, having been a popular sailing destination for centuries. There are marinas placed all around the lake. Plus a wide range of superb eateries and shops, sure to delight!
Also, on the west side of the lake is the beautiful Aira Force Waterfall. It is one of the National Park’s most popular natural tourist attractions. Glenridding is a particularly popular tourist attraction with mountain walkers. They visit the village to scale England’s third highest peak, Helvellyn.
