Valerie “Our second stay here with our family, including 4 grandchildren, and it is a really lovely house to stay in for a Lakes holiday.”
Plenty of equipment, large kitchen, toys, games, entertainment consoles and hot tub. Even in October it was a treat to be able to use it as the weather was very kind to us! Beautifully clean, comfortable beds and complimentary hamper and toiletries. Plus a welcome vase of flowers. Only minus was the noisy road sweeper in the car park at 6 in the morning! Lovely to hear the owls and see the bats on Halloween. Plenty of easy walks from the house too. We were very thankful to be allowed to ...

Carolyn L. “Fabulous place to stay.”
Very well stocked and plenty of space for everyone. Beautifully maintained property. We aim to have our family holiday here again.
- Carolyn L., July 2024Peter “The best house we have ever stayed in in the Lakes.”
There was every thing we needed and more. The welcome hamper was great and a real treat. Sitting in the hot tub watching the planes fly overhead was brilliant. Even though we were in Ambleside, the house was so private and quiet. Ambleside has so many great restaurants and shops we didn’t need to go far. There are so many walks from our door we didn’t really need to use the car much. (If you want something different go to Yew Tree farm for the Herdwick experience which was fantastic).
- Peter, June 2024Andrew “All that were on the Holiday had a brilliant time.”
The house was clean, spacious and had everything we needed. The garden and hot tub were awesome and coupled with the excellent weather, our trip could not have been more perfect. Close to the centre of Ambleside so we had all the amenities on our doorstep. I would highly recommend this property for a memorable trip to the outstanding Lake District.
- Andrew, May 2024Dawn “Everything was top class: the comfort of ALL the beds, the hot tub, the dining space, the comfort of the living room and all the kitchen equipment.”
The dishwasher is the best I've ever used. The kitchen had EVERYTHING you could possibly need. The only thing that I couldn't find was a seive to drain my pasta (I used a vegetable steaming pan) but I discovered many seives in the cupboard by the sink on the last day! We hope to come back sometime but getting the 10 of us together was the tricky bit (only 9 of us made it this time). One suggestion: You have the most fabulously detailed information about everything in the house (I read it all throughout the week) but I could have done with a quick, idiot's guide for using things like the oven, TV, dishwasher etc. Also, the light over the dining room door to the patio: We couldn't find a switch anywhere but thought the decking steps could have been quite dangerous without one (We had our own lamp with us but others might not). We were all very impressed that a house of this calibre was available to hire for holidays. Thank you so much for sharing what really is a luxurious home from home.
- Dawn, March 2024Andrew “Definitely a home from home.”
Extremely comfortable and well laid out. Everything you could possibly need and more. Superb location, very near to all amenities. Owners respond immediately to any questions. This was a perfect fit for our family, (8 adults, 2 children and a toddler) I would definitely recommend this property to anyone.
- Andrew, December 2023Kathryn “We were a family of eight, including two babies under two, which stayed at wonderful Bracken Howe the 15th to 18th December.”
We were so delighted on finding the house so beautifully decorated for Christmas when we arrived; it was a lovely welcome (together with the scrummy welcome hamper) to this charming, comfortable, well-equipped and well-positioned nineteenth century house. The character of the house with its original features, yet fully modernised and equipped, was delightful. The weather was pretty grim, but we expect that in the Lakes in December! It would not stop us recommending Bracken Howe at any time of the year. Thank you Phil and Janet for a wonderful weeekend.
- Kathryn, December 2023Ed “This was another great family week at Bracken Howe in glorious Ambleside and we feel it is now our second home.”
The house is grandly spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Cold sunny days and we still made good use of the hot tub every day.
- Ed, November 2023Valerie “This was the best holiday house we have ever stayed in.”
It had a lovely atmosphere, a warm hot tub, plenty of toys & games, complimentary toiletries, and a fantastic Welcome hamper. There was a lovely view of Loughrigg fell and we were fortunate in having a week of beautiful weather to sit outside and relax. Plenty of walks from the house with no need for a car.
- Valerie, March 2023Alison “Amazing place to stay to celebrate a special birthday with friends.”
We were all blown away with the comfort, atmosphere and facilities. The hot tub was fabulous. We have stayed in the Lakes for 30 years now and this is one of the best places we have ever stayed. Thank you
- Alison, November 2022Muriel “A stunning property set in a great location to base yourself for all things outdoors.”
Very comfortable, highly maintained, and very beautiful interior. I can genuinely not pick any fault with this property. A party of 8 very satisfied guests.
- Muriel, October 2022Paul “A very well and thoughtfully maintained property.”
Very convenient for shops/restaurants/pubs in Ambleside. An excellent base for walking and exploring the wider Lake District.
- Paul, September 2022Stephen “We had a great stay at Bracken Howe for grandparents and two families with young grandchildren.”
Fantastic house which was very roomy and well equipped. Also a great central location for town and local amenities' and scenery...
- Stephen, August 2022Euan “Lovely property, ideally located in a quiet street very close to Ambleside Town Centre.”
The property is spacious, very well appointed with high-end appliances and bedding, quiet and relaxing. There is parking for 4 cars easily on the driveway and a multitude of pubs, shops and restaurants a very short walk from the property. Coupled with the fact that there are many walk options from the front door this was an ideal property for a walking group such as ours
- Euan, June 2022Caroline “We really enjoyed our holiday in Bracken Howe, it’s a well equipped and very comfortable house in the perfect location, close to the centre of Ambleside but quiet.”
The hot tub was lovely to use at the end of a day on the fells and we enjoyed view over the park as we enjoyed some bbq’s.
- Caroline, July 2021Sally Pryde “"A good location close to centre of Ambleside and easy access to lots of walks and activities.”
Property well equipped to cope with 8 adults and accommodate needs of three infants under 2 years of age. "
- Sally Pryde, Nov -0001Seward party “The accurate description was spot on.”
Spacious rooms, many with glorious views. Top quality furniture and bedding. Extremely clean & well presented. Good parking and lovely private garden.

- Bone party, Nov -0001Wandle party “Having the whole family together in such a great house with all the comforts & facilities and in such a convenient location.”
Our elder daughter, who did most of the cooking for us all, just loved the kitchen and all the equipment. We all loved the flowers and the welcome pack.
- Wandle party, Nov -0001Clark party “The location is excellent.”
Very central for lots of restaurants and close to lots of activities for families
- Clark party, Nov -0001Gilmour party “The accommodation was of a very high standard and the facilities were excellent.”
The age range of the party was from 2 to 71 and there was plenty for everybody to do. The big attraction was that it was close to the town centre but the outside play areas and the hot tub were also well enjoyed

About the location
AMBLESIDE
Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
