Howes Beck Cottage

We absolutely love staying in Howes Beck Cottage, the setting is so peaceful and there are lovely walks and views from the doorstep and the lakes are only a short drive away.

The cottage is very well appointed with everything you might need and very comfortably furnished. The flowers, fudge and milk are a lovely welcome and the dogs always enjoy their treats too. We will return.

This is the second time we have stayed at Howes Beck and it is such a lovely property.

The accommodation is very comfortable and everything you need is there. The location is perfect for exploring the Lake District. The owners live next door and are lovely. We would recommend this property for your stay in the Lake District as it’s like being at home. Being dog friendly was an added bonus .

Howes Beck Cottage is in a perfect location, very peaceful.

The cottage is very well equipped, they have thought of everything and provided everything. Bedrooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable. It is definitely one of the best places I have stayed in and would recommend it to anyone.

Huge super comfy bed! Lovely welcome touches: fresh flowers, local biscuits and a kilner jar of treats for our dog. Short walk to an excellent village pub, and v helpful community shop.

Howes Beck Cottage was a wonderful base for our holiday in this beautiful quiet part of the Lake District.

The accommodation was really comfortable and spotlessly clean with everything we required. It was lovely to find a cafetière as well as the coffee machine!! The location allowed us to walk out onto the Fells without having to drive which was perfect and made for a superbly relaxing holiday. It was really nice being able to meet our hosts who were so welcoming. We would definitely like to return and cannot rate it highly enough!

The owners, who live next door, are friendly and helpful and they have furnished the property with good quality items. Definitely a five star holiday home.

My husband and I once again stayed at Howes Beck, I cannot find fault in this lovely accommodation at all and that is one of the reasons we love coming back each year, we love the piece and quiet and you certainly get this at Howes Beck, there is everything you need here that creates a home from home.

Howes Beck Cottage is lovely and the owners very welcoming.

Facilities in the cottage are excellent with comfort and practicality in mind. We particularly liked the wood burner, the comfy beds, and the drying rack and airing cupboard for drying out wet kit. The cottage is on the moor, just a 5 minute walk to The Mardale Inn, a community owned pub in the village which is well worth a visit. The menu is fairly limited, but the food is cooked to perfection.

The cottage is located away from the main road in the village, so it is very nice and secluded, but still with easy access to the village shop and pub.

A delightful barn conversion in a very community oriented village and perfect for easy access to the high fells around Haweswater and Ullswater.

Rich and Kate were wonderful and welcoming hosts without intruding on our holiday. The cottage is extremely well furnished with some lovely touches. Highly recommended!

We stayed here for a week with our two dogs.

The cottage was excellent everything you needed and more. The directions sent by the owners were very good and easy to follow. The cottage’s location was beautiful and so quiet. We have lots of visits from the horses who obviously thought we were going to feed them over the gate. The cottage itself was so comfortable and the week flew by. Places nearby were easy to get too though I don’t think we did as much as we intended. We have booked to go back next year as we loved it so much.

Our second visit to this lovely quiet cottage.

It has everything you may need and the owners are lovely people. It is surrounded by a great common for walks. Our little dog loved the walks. Sheep and horses roam freely around the cottage. We even saw a red squirrel and a lesser spotted woodpecker on this visit. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this cottage to anyone who likes peace and quite and who enjoy a countryside walk.

The cottage is amazingly very comfortable excellent facilities and accommodating. Everyone very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely book again.

We found Howes Beck Cottage to be the perfect location to explore the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales, the cottage has the added bonus of having sheep, horses and red squirrels literally on your doorstep.

Rich & Kate were the perfect owners, friendly, informative & helpful. We loved the cottage, it had everything we could ask for & would have no hesitation recommending the cottage, ideal for both couples and families. We must also recommend the local village pub The Mardale Inn which Rich and Kate are involved with, we ordered a takeaway meal, large portions, very good value for money and more importantly the food is very good.

The flowers, fudge and milk are a lovely touch for the human visitors and the dog treats go down very well with the four legged one! Very well appointed cottage, with everything one needs. We will be back!

Howes Beck cottage is situated in a very quiet setting just 5 minutes walk from Bampton.

It is extremely well equipped, comfortable and immaculately clean. There are numerous walks from the door, as well as easy access to Haweswater reservoir. There is a small outside space, but no garden. There is plenty of space for car parking outside the cottage. The village has a community pub which serves excellent food.

Excellent cottage, fantastic hosts, superb location highly recommend you visit will definitely be returning.

The most amazing cosy little cottage tucked away on the edge of the Lake District.

So well equipped and the owners really have thought of everything. We felt at home straightaway and we were very sad to be leaving after just one week. Such a peaceful location to unwind and de-stress. We cannot fault Howes Beck Cottage and cannot wait to return one day.

Very peaceful and tranquil. Well placed to access The Lakes, lovely walks from the cottage and fab community pub 5 mins away; very welcoming with lovely food.

The cottage was so homely and comfortable. We were really impressed with the small touches, such as decorating the house for Christmas. The house was very well equipped, especially in the kitchen. You could easily spend longer here. Great communication with the hosts. Thanks again for having us!

Just returned home from a lovely week stay at Howes Beck Cottage.

The cottage was perfect. Spotlessly clean, comfortable and so well equipped. There was even a beautiful Christmas tree up which made it very Christmassy. The food at the local pub was amazing! I would definitely return.

Such a beautiful location, with everything you could possibly need. Kate and Rich were the perfect hosts, who obviously know how to cater for people holidaying with their canine family members. The village of Bampton is a very short, and enjoyable walk from the cottage. The community pub offers the warmest of welcomes, with great menu on offer. The village shop and tearoom is charming, with a little bit of everything. Staff are so friendly and knowledgeable so it's great to just introduce yourself and ask lots of questions about the area. We hope to return in the near future as we really only scratched the surface of what the area has to offer. 5 Stars all round ✨️

Feels like a home away from home as we have been coming here for a few years now. Kate and Rich cant do enough for us and the kids and dogs love the safe drive way (as the dogs are small) and the openness around the property. Already booked for next year!

The best staycation we’ve had in a long while.

The owners create such a home from home feel with little touches only a woman would think of. Its a delightful area and perfect for a quiet family break. We all loved it and even the horses stopped by to say hello. We will be back for sure! Thank you for creating such a lovely family home at an affordable price.

The cottage was absolutely devine, (my dream home) so cosy, loved the fresh flowers, the goodies and hand written note.

You wanted for nothing on your stay. We booked this holiday purely for Amber our little shitzu for her 17th Birthday but unfortunately she passed away in April, and if it wasn’t for her we would have missed out on this wonderful cottage with stunning views and great walks.

We stayed here in June this year.

If was our first time at this cottage, although we have stayed at many others throughout the Lakes. From opening the door it was a warm welcome with personal touches including a little welcome postcard (which we kept as a souvineer) and a packet of fudge. Our dogs also felt welcomed with a jar of treats. Milk was left in the fridge so allow us to make a cuppa on arrival. The cottage was immaculate and fresh flowers left in a vase on the table. The owners are lovely and friendly and stayed out of the way, other than a few friendly conversations in passing. We enjoyed lots of beautiful walks with our 2 dogs straight from the door step and found the cottage to be warm and cosy in the evenings when we returned with everything you could possibly need. We also enjoyed a stop off at the local pub with had a few outdoor benches which was perfect after a long walk. The local shop (although small) was well stocked and helped us out with a few supplies when running low. Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely cottage. We loved it so much we have booked straight back up to come next year.

The location was good being in a quieter part of the Lake District but still near enough to visit the places we wanted. It was thoughtful of the owners to provide us with some provisions and flowers and fudge.

Howes Beck Cottage is the perfect place to stay.

The location is peaceful, the scenery is lovely and the Lake District is on the doorstep. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. Everything you need for the perfect stay, including little extras for the dogs. We love it there and will definitely return.

From the moment we stepped through the door we knew we had made the right choice.

Fresh flowers, tea & coffee, biscuits and cup cakes were most welcome. The kitchen was fully equipped and the lounge and bedrooms most comfortable. The location was great. Very quite and safe to walk along the roads to the local pub and shop. Larger centres such as Penrith not too far away by car.

Howes Beck is a simply delightful gem.

It is a very cosy, well appointed, well positioned cottage in an extremely beautiful spot. It is a short walk to the local community pub which is very friendly and serves good wholesome meals and there are many very scenic walks from the front door. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. What more could you ask for?

It is maintained immaculately year after year. It is perfectly equipped with no unnecessary odds and ends. The area is beautiful with so many wonderful walks and places to visit. We have already booked our fifth visit for next year.

Lovely cottage with very welcoming owners in a peaceful area of the Lakes, with easy access to Lowther Castle and Haweswater.

Very dog friendly, we had some great early morning walks across the Common and along the riverbank.

Howes Beck Cottage is simply perfect.

We have now been 4 times and love it. Kate and Rich are welcoming and so helpful. There are many beautiful walks from the cottage. There is a local shop and great community pub. Sunday roast was amazing. We will be back next year. Thank you for your hospitality Kate and Rich. Ps There are two gorgeous dogs too. Fraggle and Luna. Sheep and horses visit you at the gate. We stayed at Howes Beck for a week, we fell in love with the place and are seriously considering living in the area as we loved the village life and the community feel where everyone pulls together.

Howes Beck cottage was a delight to stay in and it had everything anyone would need for a stay here and there wouldn’t be any hesitation in staying here again and most likely I will book for next year as well now. Super holiday let in great location.

Lovely cottage with beautiful views but unless you are a walker or youngsters then there is nothing to do and have a long way to go to do anything so sorry not really for pensioners Found the shower dangerous as very slippery Said its dog friendly but found a lot of restrictions and no outdoor space apart from a cobbled drive

Walks on the doorstep or a short drive away. Horses to greet you in the morning and so peaceful. The cottage was warm, comfortable and well equipped. We had everything we needed. The beds were super comfy and the dogs loved lying in front of the log burner on the one night we lit it. We had a wonderful time, had everything we needed and would highly recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to stay in the Lake District. The hosts Rich and Kate were on hand if needed.

A totally outstanding holiday cottage in an amazing location.

Everything you need and more. Rich & Kate are wonderful hosts. The beds are so comfortable and huge! The living room so spacious and cozy and the bathroom and kitchen done to a very high spec. I usually bring extra stuff from home when self catering, it is not required, there is everything you could possibly need , including a washing machine. I only got home yesterday and am already planning my booking for next year Xx

Howes Beck Cottage is situated in a quiet location surrounded by countryside yet within easy walking distance of the village shop and excellent community pub.

The cottage has everything you need for countryside break with modern conveniences including a dishwasher, smart TV, washing machine, drying places and a microwave. There's also a woodburner.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

The property is beautiful, situated in a wonderful, peaceful and very scenic part of Shap. Wild horses, sheep and a lovely stream on the doorstep. The owners had decorated for our arrival for our birthday celebrations. The welcome pack was very informative, especially for our first visit to the area. The house was immaculate throughout and very comfortable for our family of 4 + our doggo. Could not fault it! Will highly recommend!

We have stayed in many cottages with Sykes, but this has to be one of the best.

We wanted to try a different area in The Lakes to where we normally go and we were not disappointed, we were able to do so many new walks and visit so many new places being based slightly further north within The Lakes. The cottage itself is beautiful, so well equipped and very comfortable - especially the beds, I slept in until 10am on the first night, which is absolutely unheard of for me! We are especially grateful to the cottage for being two-dog friendly, we sometimes struggle with two so really are so happy to find somewhere so amazing that is two-dog friendly! A shout out to the owner(s) also who helped us on the first evening! We absolutely hope to come again very soon!

The owners had made an extra effort with Christmas tree and decorations. Great to have dog biscuits and chocolates on arrival. The cottage has everything you need. Highly recommend a stay at Howes Beck to anyone. We all had a great stay in the week before Christmas. Highly recommend a meal at the Mardale Inn. Our children loved seeing the ponies that visited. We will be booking here again.

Could not have asked for anymore.

Directions owner supplied were excellent and accurate. Cottage is very well equipped, the best I have ever had. The only slight quibble I had was instructions regarding dogs, had I known that dogs were not welcome in the bedroom, whilst understanding this request had I known before booking I would not have booked. One of my dogs is a Rescued dog and needs to be able to find me in strange surroundings so for his happiness I could not comply with this request and felt uncomfortable doing so. But that is a minor quibble in what was otherwise a wonderful week. ,

The single story barn conversion was lovely, warm, wood fire, all you would need, lovely comfy mattresses and perfectly situated for walks along the river or up the tops from the house.

Excellent for our dog too. There is sadly no pub in walking distance but there are advanced plans for a community owned pub nearby. The local shop is convenient and plenty of choice for places to eat in a relatively short drive. Only drawback is the lack of a view from inside the accommodation, but I guess if it had a picture window it would be much less affordable! And the view is there if you put a coat on and open the door! Absolutely recommend it.

A gorgeous place to stay.

Wonderful setting & lovely cottage. The hosts made sure everything was in place for a comfortable stay, with great attention to detail. We loved it & our two dogs were very settled & comfortable too, with dogs treats, dog towel & safe secure yard. Ponies stopped by for a greeting over the gate one evening and we met them again on beautiful walks directly from the cottage. A wonderful place off the beaten track but still in easy access to the attractions of the lakes. Thank you

Lovely holiday.

Ideally situated on the edge of the Lake District giving access to the Lakes and Scottish Borders for day trips. Very rural feel with sheep & horses roaming around, spectacular sky’s at night. Cosy & very comfortable, we want to go back!

Howes Beck Cottage is a very comfortable home from home barn conversion.

It has great facilities and a very high level of cleanliness. The location is idyllic and peaceful and you will not find better hosts.

Lovely cottage out in the sticks great view and there is a small river just out the back which was ideal for the dogs as our week was very hot indeed.

Area between the cottage and the owners house is secure for medium sized dogs upwards and is perfect for outdoors on a hot day at nights as it keeps you shaded. Walks for dogs are on your doorstep just keep an eye out for the sheep. Facilities indoors were ideal everything you need is there apart from a toilet brush is all I could find lacking. And just personal taste but the seats in the living room were high armed leather ones. That apart the cottage is very clean and has everything you need. A good base for anyone with dogs visiting the area.

Such a wonderful holiday cottage on the fells by a babbling brook.

The pub was closed and the landlord/Lady had moved to Australia. But a lovely cafe and shop in the village, maybe a little remote for some people but we absolutely loved where it was. Cottage well equipped and spotless. And within 5 miles from pubs.. would recommend if you love walking and peace a tranquility

The owners live next door and are warm, welcoming and couldn’t be more helpful. The cottage was immaculately clean, comfortable, and provided everything we needed for our weeks stay. Milk, biscuits, tea, coffee, treats for the dog and fresh flowers left as a welcoming gift. Had a relaxing stay and wouldn’t hesitate to stay at Howes Beck Cottage again.

This is a really nice little cottage in the middle of open common land.

There are regular visits from Sheep, Horses, even an occasional Red Squirrel. It's ideally located on the East side of the Lakes. Be aware there are many narrow, twisty and steep roads around the area.

The cottage was comfortable, well presented and the owners seem to have thought of everything as it was very well equipped.

They even thought of our dog, with treats and towel etc. The off road parking is good and secure. It's in a lovely, quite remote area on the fells. There are barely any amenities in the local village, just one little shop/tea room so you do need to drive a lot if you're not planning on just taking walks in the area. Inside, the cottage is a little dim, even on a very sunny day, as all but one little window in the kitchen face the large barn conversion at the side rather than the views but nevertheless we had a great time and the surroundings are beautiful!

We had a wonderful week but sadly the astronomical price rises for next year make it unlikely that we can afford to go again.

Lovely cottage very warm and comfortable very friendly helpfull owners in an amazing area of the lake district.

Look forward to revisit.

Howes Beck Cottage is like Mary Poppins.

Practically Perfect in every way. The location is stunning. The cottage has everything and the Hosts are amazing. Been twice so far and we will be back.

The owner had put Christmas decorations in which were very much appreciated. A fabulous location, very quiet and peaceful perfect for relaxing. Highly recommended.

The cottage was absolutely brilliant, lovely and clean, cosy and had everything you needed!

Our girls loved the horses that visited most days to the gate for a carrot. Great location, for walking, Lowther Castle, Horse riding, and Askham is a beautiful little village with a nice pub and excellent pizza from Askham Hall. We cannot wait to return!

The cottage was just perfect.

It was well placed. It had everything you needed and more. It was clean and comfortable. We sat with log fire every night. It was just amazing. Felt relaxed and recharged to be honest didn't want to come home. Highly recommended. Will definitely be going back.

Hows Beck cottage was warm cosy and very clean.

Everything we needed was available. The Woodburner was the devil to get going so we only used it the one evening it made it nice and cosy with the glow of a real fire. Already looking forward to next time.

Lovely property that was fully equipped with everything you could need.

Lovely deep bath with piping hot water and comfy beds. A warm, welcoming property that I would have no hesitation in recommending.

An excellent place to get away from it all, and away from the busier areas of the lakes.

Some great areas nearby for walks and mountain biking. The owners Rich and Kate are lovely and most helpful, and the cottage was perfect. For a small family or group its great.

We had a great week staying in this lovely cottage.

We had never been to the Lake District before and we felt this cottage was in a great location to get out and about to Ullswater and surrounding areas. Fully equipped and comfortable, and the enclosed space was great for our dogs.

Quiet, clean and great value. We had a lovely week up here with our two kids and dog. Beautiful walks in the middle of nowhere, then relaxing in what is a comfortable and well equipped cottage overseen by two charming people who can't do enough to help, or leave you to just get on with your holiday. We loved it.

Owners were excellent, obviously put a lot of thought and consideration into the property.

Had also gone that extra into keeping things safe for us, following the Covid restrictions and regulations.

The location is lovely , so visited nice places , had wonderful walks some of them straight from the cottage . It was always a pleasure to come back to this cottage as we found it very comfortable and spacious . Would certainly recommend it to anybody who likes peace and quiet combined with comfort .

What a magical place to spend Christmas!

The cottage was so cosy and well equipped. Kate and Rich were lovely hosts- made us feel truly welcomed. This was a fantastic dog friendly place that provided bowls and towels to wash and dry dirty paws as well as dog food bowls and doggy treats. Safe enclosed area and fabulous walks from the cottage gate-Murphy loved it!!! It was in a stunning area- secluded but only a few minutes walk from the little village and a short drive from shops and the Lakes. Fantastic to walk round festive Keswick and Ambleside. Drove to Haweswater and managed a wee hike up the pass on Christmas Eve- absolutely awesome views! Definitely recommend Howes Beck Cottage for a proper dog friendly break.

The cottage is very clean, comfortable and has everything you need for a great holiday. The Red Squirrels that came daily for nuts that I left out, and the horses that visit the gate for an apple or just a fuss absolutely brilliant

A peaceful location.

A relaxing and homely cottage. We enjoyed our stay there.

This lovely cottage is nicely situated that you can easily get around to visit the Lake District or you can just relax and chill in semi-seclusion.

It's fantastic having the moors around you with the sheep roaming freely and the occasional horse may come to say hi too. There are some great places to eat just a few miles down the road in Askam but the local pub only feeds it's residence.

The place was amazing and very well decorated!

Could have lived there forever!! However the hot water for the baths kept running out so we took about 20min to run a very small bath. Apart from that all was perfect :)

The cottage is extremely well stocked and supplied with everything you could think of. It’s also very clean and tidy. The WiFi was a most welcome in the evenings and was really fast. Nice extra touches for your canine friends.

very friendly people everywhere we went .The lounge and kitchen were slightly dark and needed lights on most of the day but this is unfortunate and something the owners are trying to rectify with the local planners .our dog absolutely loved the outside area to the cottage and the sheep that wandered by . A very clean and shallow srream runs just behind the cottage which he loved . Will hopefully return in the future .

Well presented barn set in a beautiful location.

The facilities in the cottage were excellent. We had our two dogs with us who were made very welcome, and loved the many scenic walks in the area. Great time had by all, and will definitely be returning.

The cottage is large, clean and comfortable.

We. Arrived to find the owners had left us a pint of milk - invaluable. TV reception and WiFi was excellent. A jar of dog treats left for our dogs. We were self catering and found the kitchen absolutely fully equipped including a dishwasher and washing machine. The shower was really efficient and bathroom well equipped and modern. The beds were comfortable and plenty of storage. Heating was good including log stove. Would definitely book again. Highly recommend.

Scenery and walks were amazing. Cottage was exceptionally clean, everything was well provided, would highly recommend it and will definitely be going back there.

When we arrived, the owner gave us a fantastic greeting , All the information you could possible need is in a clip folder (idiots guide) complete with pictures showing what is being described.

We didn't use the log burner , too lazy, but we are sure it would have given a lot of heat.. the local shop was very accommodating although, only open 10 to 1 pm.. The lakes were In easy reach and beautiful. A GOOOD all round Quiet holiday made even better by excellent weather for the time of year (5th to 12th Jan 2019) Well done to the owners .. we will be back. 10/10

The cottage was absolutely first rate.

It was spacious, warm, plenty of instant hot water, beautiful comfy beds and lovely clean bedding and the kitchen so very well equipped. The entertainment systems, radios and tvs etc, were modern and first class, a good sized telly is always a welcome bonus. The surrounding area is a delight and the space immediately adjacent was very secure for our 3 small doggies. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. A total delight.

The new owners have made this cottage a wonderful relaxing place to stay, the bedding, towels etc was top quality and felt like a lovely treat, we have never stayed anywhere before where literally everything was provided, so we took a lot of our own things only to find they were not needed as everything was available to us.

We can not recommend this cottage highly enough and we will definitely be booking again. It was situated ideally to explore north or south lakes and we found lovely places to walk with the dog. A big thank you to the new owners who made us feel welcome with the note and flowers and gift of wine as we were their first guests, and the biscuits for the pooch! We had a wonderful time thank you very much.
