“On the whole the property was nice and we really enjoyed our stay.”

However it needed a thorough clean which was disappointing and let the property down. The parking could be a bit of an issue if you have a big car, ours only just squeezed on the space.

“A fabulous place to stay in a lovely village.”

Beautiful walks from the door and a pub that served delicious food. Bed very comfortable, cottage clean, fire lovely and warm on those cooler nights and a well equipped kitchen. We will be back!

Ben has made a significant improvement of the property and the facilities are excellent. We were a little disappointed with the cleanliness (unfortunately we had to wash all the crockery) Othereise a lovely holiday and we look forward to returning. Thank you

“Marvellous little apartment.”

Amenities were perfect. Unfortunately no materials for the log burner. Front door swollen and very difficult to open/close.. I was really disappointed by the cobwebs in all the rooms especially behind the bed. !! Every wall picture frame was filthy. There was a spider in its web at the base of the toilet. I was under the impression that I couldn't get access till 4pm due to the cleaning? I'm a little confused..??

“Pros of Barn End: Newly renovated cottage, tastefully decorated and clean.”

Well equipped kitchen and fantastic log burner ( bring your own logs) to dry off by. Location very close to a pub and plenty of public footpaths nearby. Electric radiators that were easy to use and kept our towels nice and toasty Cons of Barn End Grade ii listed building means single glazed windows which can be noisy next to the road. We struggled to keep the place free of damp without the log burner lit ( it was a very rainy week in October) including the shower room that only had a noisy extractor fan. The bed looked more comfortable on the photos and we even tried flipping the (2 zipped together) mattresses to see if it would help. The sofa was also a bit uncomfortable to sit on for longer periods of time (which we did because of the rain!) Overall I was happy with my holiday and have learned to expect these things in any case so decide for yourself, we also didn't work out the electric shower until most of the way through the week and had been using the eco setting which was quite low pressure. The high setting seems to have temperamental temperature control being an electric shower, I'd recommend having a fiddle with it to get the right temperature. Parking was also just off the road and I could easily fit my mazda 2 in the space but not sure about larger cars

“Very dusty around bed and some cobwebs.”

The bed has not been pulled out and cleaned behind for a long time. Toilet brush is old and stained. Mattress was 2 x single beds put together and can feel the springs. Hair and stains on protector. Other then that very pleased.

Barn End is a stylishly converted first floor hayloft offering cosy comfort for two in a location just two minutes walk from the Outgate Inn and also not far to the world famous Drunken Duck Inn. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the position close to the fells and lake, so bring your bikes and canoes too! Just along the road, the Outgate Inn offers a great range of local ales and home cooked food and the famous Drunken Duck Inn is just a mile from the cottage for fine dining and ales. The delightful village of Hawkshead is only a five minute drive away. This historic village, offers a great array of popular tearooms, welcoming country pubs and a great selections of local shops. Five minutes north of the cottage, the large village of Ambleside is within easy reach with chic shops, cinema and tea rooms / restaurants galore . Closer to home, footpaths lead from Outgate to the shores of Lake Windermere or one of the most beautiful places in the Lake District, Tarn Hows. Accommodation In Detail As you park at the side of the property, traditional slate steps lead to the front door of Barn End, which in turn opens to this delightful retreat. There are a handful of traditional cottages in Outgate, as well as the all-important Outgate Inn. The cottage is surrounded by scenic strolls for all abilities, and there are many famous Lake District walking routes nearby. The Langdale Valley is only a short drive away, overlooked by the famous Langdale Pikes and offering wonderfully scenic valley strolls. Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force.
