“This could be a really nice, cosy cottage, but is let down by not providing some basic things, only providing the very bare essentials and failing to address issues that previous customers have raised.”

A modest outlay would make a big difference. -For a cottage accommodating 4, there was no corkscrew and only 3 wine glasses, which put an end to our planned celebration. -Instructions for the Hotpoint cooker were for a Tricity Bendix - brilliant! -Only one bedside light for two twin beds -One tiny chest of drawers in each room, no wardrobe / no coat hangers. (there is room for a wardrobe) -No mirror in the double bedroom and only a tiny shaving mirror in the bathroom -Extract from the guest instructions said “Heating is set to keep you comfortable and warm”. Unfortunately if you weren’t comfortable and warm there were no instructions about how to adjust the heating. -The toilet seat didn’t fit the toilet (it was too small), it was loose and precarious. There was also only one toilet roll. -we booked for a week but only 3 dishwasher tablets. -As stated by previous visitors the lounge seats are pretty uncomfortable. Reading customer reviews from the last couple of years some of these recurring issues clearly haven’t been addressed, seemingly either by the owner or Sykes cottages. Who cares if the money keeps rolling in? For somebody who has rented cottages every year for over 40 years, it’s sad I have to write a review like this.

The property

1 Lake View is a classic end-terrace cottage located on the outskirts of Coniston, overlooking the lake.

With The Ship Inn pub, a stone's throw away, private parking, a woodburning stove, and a Smart TV for entertainment, this cottage provides a perfect bolthole for families, couples, and friends wanting to explore the Lake District by foot, bike, or car.

Inside, you'll find a place to store your muddy boots and outdoor gear before settling into the kitchen/diner, which comes equipped with everything you'll need for a self-catering stay, including an electric oven and hob, a washing machine, and a dishwasher.

Prepare a home-cooked meal for four people to be served at the farmhouse dining table, then retire to the sitting room.

Two armchairs and a sofa are arranged in front of the woodburning stove, where you can watch the Smart TV or take in the views of the rolling hills, Grizedale, and Lake Coniston from the patio doors.

Why not enjoy a glass of wine on your private patio while taking in the breath-taking views?

As night falls, make your way upstairs to find two bedrooms, one double with lake views and the other a twin, as well as a contemporary shower room with a spacious walk-in shower.

Climbing, walking, watersports, fishing, and cycling are all available year-round in Coniston, making it an excellent location for outdoor enthusiasts.

Grizedale is a national forest with numerous hiking and cycling paths, and the Lakeland Trail and the Coniston 14 are two popular annual running races.

The National Trust's Steam Yacht Gondola, a luxury yacht, is located on Coniston Water along with a variety of watersports, but if you prefer to stay on land, the mountains of The Old Man of Coniston, Scafell Pike, and Helvellyn are all within easy reach.

Coniston includes a convenience store, The Ruskin Museum to learn about local history, and walks through lovely scenery to places like Coniston Copper Mines right from your doorstep.

More activities and amenities may be found farther away in Hawkshead, Ambleside with its Roman Fort, and Lake Windermere, where you can learn about Beatrix Potter's life, cruise the lake, and explore the National Trust's Wray Castle.

At 1 Lake View, there's something for everyone on your next Lake District adventure.
