Lisa “We stayed here years ago and loved it.”
Stayed again and absolutely loved it. Love the slight changes they've made with the sitting room/dining room. We just love the cottage, nice and comfortable, kitchen is lovely, garden well maintained, locals are friendly. Wonderful to have a coal fire too. Butchers and grocers down the road, post office too, small garage with petrol and diesel, also sells, kindling, logs and coal. Small cafe next door, cook from fresh. Not far from the main tourist places. Just love it. No WiFi so took ...

The only slight thing I would change would be the booking in and out times, maybe 12 noon for both.

Lucy “Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hillside!”
! The property is enormous and really easy to get to. The kitchen was really well equipped, stunning garden, and lots of space to relax. Definitely recommend for a large group! The beds are comfy, there was lots of recommendations for the local area, and just generally a great stay. Would also recommend Old Kings head in the village for food and the bakery for coffee and pastries. We will definitely return!!

Tim “Fantastic property, bags of room, very comfortable, great garden.”
We've stopped almost every year for the last 12 years or so as it is ideal for our extended family and dogs, and,John the owner, is very accomodating.

Karen “We have been to this house approx 9 times now, house needing some maintenance.”
Damp coming through wall in living room and en suite bedroom. Very few glasses in kitchen, given house sleeps 7/8 people there is only about 8 glasses of various sizes .house would benefit from wifi, also basement which has pool table in poor condition as is basement could be kitted out and used as a proper games room.
- Karen, June 2024 -
George “The location of the cottage was ideal but there were several maintainance issues to be dealt with the worst of which was a dripping overflow pipe "inside" the rear porch causing us to lift our belongings off the floor as they were getting wet.”
Also, the BBQ framework had rotted away completely making it unsafe (particularly with a 4 year old running round the garden). Altogether we felt the house had been furnished to provide the bare minimum for letting

Elizabeth “We had the most amazing holiday, the house was a delight and the beds were the best we've had in a holiday home.”
The house is situated in a beautiful village with the best facilities that you could want. Fabulous walks for those who struggle to get about (wheel chair friendly)to those that like a challenge. Great place to have your dog with you .
- Elizabeth, May 2024 -
Vickie “Another fantastic stay at Hillside.”
The house is wonderful and the setting is perfect. We regard this as our second home and look forward to returning every year.

Nicola “Amazing property.”
We had a wonderful stay.

Joan “Property was in the heart of the lovely little village and in the main square.”
Village has everything should you need any supplies; grocers, butchers, bakery, pubs, cafe, post office. The house was great, very clean and had everything needed for an enjoyable stay. It had also been decorated for Christmas which was a lovely touch. Plenty of space for 8 people with 1 double ensuite, 1 double, and 4 single beds across 3 bedrooms. The 2 sitting rooms were great if people wanted to watch different TV channels. Only slight negative is there was no internet so we had to rely upon 4G signal which was very hit and miss. As we were on holiday it wasn't too much of a problem.
- Joan, December 2023 -
David “Fantastic house in the square , the local walk at Broughton tower is idyllic, brilliant for the dogs.”
The local area is so underrated, long may it stay that way The garden at the rear is to die for. Excellent butchers and bakers. My only gripe was no WiFi an essential these days although I was aware before booking
- David, August 2023 -
Adrian “A really lovely, comfortable, spacious and very well equipped cottage.”
Would I’ve to visit in the winter to make full use of the open fireplaces! Loved the cottage, the village of Broughton was delightful and the local area stunning, with easy access to the lakes, Coniston in particular, the fells and also the sea. We’d never been to this region of Cumbria and it’s definitely somewhere we’ll revisit and would be more than happy to stay at Hillside again.
- Adrian, August 2023 -
Nicola “Had a wonderful time in a beautiful cottage , the garden is so pretty and dog friendly with walks straight out the front door .”
Beds very comfortable , kitchen well equipped , only couple of things I think would help ,property would benefit from a broom as hard floors and information booklet could be updated to include when food vans come to square in evening . We would definitely stay here again
- Nicola, May 2023 -
Timothy “Lovely property very well equipped and in a lovely setting with a beautiful quiet garden.”
Everything you need for a relaxing family holiday with stunning walks on your door step, a fantastic bakery in the village as well as a great grocery store and butchers. We would definitely pick this cottage again.
- Timothy, May 2023 -
Deborah “WiFi would be helpful but we managed.”
The bedroom door doesn’t shut which is annoying. Bathroom excellent. Kitchen needs a colander. Garden lovely. Overall very nice house.

Vickie “Always an absolute pleasure to stay at Hillside -we never want to leave!”

Christian “Our family enjoyed a fabulous stay at Hillside.”
The property and its location was perfect for our Easter break - with so much to see and do from the doorstep. We loved the pretty enclosed garden space, and used the bench for lunches in the garden. The property had plenty of space and had everything we needed during our stay. The open fire place was so cosy on an evening and we felt the whole property was clean, relaxing and homely. We didn't mind the lack of WiFi - this wasn't an issue at all. The local walks were beautiful. Our young children loved exploring the ponds and fields. The pubs in the square were so friendly, and served excellent food and drink. Would recommend Hillside to everyone - especially those with children. Thank you very much!
- Christian, April 2023 -
Julie “Beautiful property with lots of lovely dog walks and very friendly local pub, ...”
Beautiful property with lots of lovely dog walks and very friendly local pub, and secure garden for our dogs, everything you need for a relaxing break, really enjoyed it

Terrence “Hillside was great for us, except for two things: 1) We could not find any information about the heating arangements.”
It took until our last day before someone found the unlabelled instructions book, under a table in a room we did not use. We did not realise the heating/hot water was on a timer and when we got back one day, soaked with the rain, we were very disappointed there was no hot water. It turned out this came on around 17.00hr 2) Front bedrooms. It would be good if the owners fitted blinds to the front bedroom windows to stop light from the powerful street lamp shining in Otherwise, full marks!
- Terrence, March 2023 -
Judith “This is a beautiful home, furnished to suit the area and period of the property.”
. We felt at home in the comfortable house. Lots of space but still warm and cosy. The houses was spotlessly clean and the beds very comfy. We had a light out in the shower room and an electrician came the same day! Ideal for those who want to get away from it all. No Wi-Fi and limited reception for the phone. Definitely return.
- Judith, March 2023 -
Paul “Property in in a great place in the town square, walks in all directions.”
Nice shops pubs & cafes. There is plenty of space and well maintained. The only thing that is missing is the internet, yes there is mobile signal (many different ones & poor ) in the square but inside the stone walls very poor and intermittent . Full fibre internet is available in the village so it would be nice in the house. A few pounds more on the price to cover it, small. Full mobile, internet and more choice of tv. Thank you.
- Paul, February 2023 -
Paul “Wonderful place to stay right in the heart of the village.”
Good pubs, good walks, local. And not more than 30mins drive to other destinations in the lakes. Superb...
- Paul, July 2022 -
Geoffrey “Once again excellent all round in a perfect location.”
- Geoffrey, June 2022 -
C “This was the perfect holiday home for us.”
We loved it. There were 4 huge rooms upstairs and down. It was clean and tidy, with a stone floor in the kitchen, so I wasn't worried about the dogs causing any problems. Crisp, white bedding. Open fires if you wanted them. For me the best bit was the garden... glorious!
- C, June 2022 -
Amy “Absolutely loved our stay.”
The house, garden and surrounding area was lovely. Missed WiFi a little but only cause signal was so poor so those of us who needed to be reachable for children etc was quite difficult. Only thing would maybe be appreciated more would be spare black bin bags (we forgot our own). But that aside our stay was wonderful!
- Amy, April 2022 -
Jo “Only one wish - WiFi would've been fantastic”
- Jo, April 2022 -
John “Comfortable and warm cottage, enjoyed our visit but picked a bad week with storms Dudley and Eunice.”
Lack of WiFi a problem. (Lost TV signal in storm) and poor phone signal meant could not use hotspot. Will definitely use again.
- John, February 2022 -
Janet “The house is perfect, it’s well furnished and equipped with everything we needed.”
Broughton has every amenity right on the doorstep. Great walks, our favourite pub (the Manor Arms) just across the square and an amazing butchers and grocers. We’ll definitely be back.
- Janet, January 2022 -
Jacqueline “We enjoyed our Christmas break at Hillside and we were impressed with the Christmas decorations that had been provided and the extra touches which made our Christmas home from home.”
Comfy beds and good shower and bath facilities. The only thing that was missing was wi-fi and thought a door mat at the front entrance would be useful: especially in the winter with muddy boots and dirty dog paws etc. We actually put newspaper down for our boots. Otherwise a perfect stay in a lovely market village and friendly locals.
- Jacqueline, December 2021 -
Caroline “Amazing place, loved the house and surrounding area.”
- Caroline, November 2021 -
Cheryl “Perfect location, the cottage had everything we needed for a weeks stay, the kitchen had good quality pots & pans along with all the utensils needed, Lots of walks literally steps away, the village shops were a bonus along with 3 pubs, two serving good quality food.”
The only draw back was the lack of WI-FI, but apart from that it was pretty much perfect
- Cheryl, October 2021 -
Vickie “Fab house in a great location”
- Vickie, September 2021 -
Helen “The village is lovely, lots of good walks in close distance.”
The garden and house are exactly as they look on the photos, garden was nice and big for our two pups. Our only issue was that the outdoor bins were full, and no bin bags were provided. I messaged the owner to try and resolve this but got no response. The local shop is not open on Sunday or bank holidays. Besides for that though, it’s a lovely house and we had a great stay.
- Helen, August 2021 -
Dianne “What a lovely comfortable house, we felt right at home straight away, bedding was spotless and lovely towels.”
Beautiful garden and we met the owner John while he was watering the lovely pot plants at the front of the house, he was very informative about places to visit in the area.
- Dianne, August 2021 -
Meg “The facilities were generally good.”
The outdoor space in the back was a lovely feature. But, a 'games room' was highlighted in the features of this place but it really fell well below expectations: it was on the lower basement floor, accessed through a 'work area', the ceilings were covered in cobwebs, it was damp and didn't feel comfortable for any of us. The pool table was old and not well-maintained (the cloth was stained and the balls rolled onto the floor when dropped through the pockets). Another issue we had to contend with was the inability to access the internet, either through wi-fi or mobile data; even something as basic as a phone signal was rarely available in the house. I know it's a holiday and it's great to have a break from modern tech but, when trying to research local activities or features, it is pretty useful to have some means of connecting to the internet. The location of the house was great, in a village that had a lovely bakery, a convenience shop, butcher and several pubs serving excellent food.
- Meg, August 2021 -
Karen “The quality of the towels provided was very poor compared to previous years.”
I have better quality towels I use for my dog. Also the games room in the basement could benefit from being done up, it's full of cobwebs and it has the potential to be a great space, at least when the pool table(which has also seen better days) was upstairs on the ground floor where the dining room is now, it had other games, books and DVD etc, I understand with covid games and books are not provided but you can't really hang out in the games room. The property would also benefit from providing WIFI, even if a small fee was applied.
- Karen, June 2021 -
Deborah “Fabulous cottage in a lovely area.”
The cottage was spotless and we had everything we needed. It is located in a lovely village with all the amenities you need and lovely walks close by.
- Deborah, May 2021 -
Vickie “Hillside is a beautiful holiday home situated in a perfect location.”
This has been our third visit and we would highly recommend it.
- Vickie, September 2020 -
Diane “The cottage was lovely - just right for our needs for the week.”
Nice quiet village but with a few shops and pubs which cater for what you need.
- Diane, August 2020 -
Stephanie “The location was lovely, really secluded whilst having the quaint village facilities at our doorstep.”
Cottage was ideal for our needs and met all our expectations.
- Stephanie, August 2020 -
Vickie “Hillside is a fabulous place to stay.”
The house is perfect, well furnished, a good kitchen and wood for the fire. Broughton has every amenity on the doorstep. Great walks, good pubs and an amazing butchers and grocers where you can buy everything you need without going to the supermarket. This was our second visit to Hillside and we will be booking again.
- Vickie, September 2019 -
Maureen “This cottage should not be advertising as having a games room.”
Part of our holiday was to include playing pool but the pool table has been moved to the basement of the property and it certainly was not a nice area to spend any time.
- Maureen, September 2019 -
Wayne “Was advertised as having a games room, this in fact is not true.”
The pool table has now been moved from a nice cosy room into the cellar which is not really that clean, my wife was looking forward to spending some time with me and my friend while we had a game but didn’t feel able to do this as it was horrible in the cellar, adding to this the pool table is stained, torn and broken with pieces of log inside the mechanism instead of the ball feeding through, in short it is broken. However on a plus note the cottage itself was beautiful and in a lovely area, the garden was fabulous and the dogs loved it. Another note of concern is the fact that the bed was extremely uncomfortable and you could feel every spring in the mattress. The fire place was magnificent. If you require an internet connection there is no WiFi in this cottage so be warned. With a few tweaks like moving the pool table upstairs and fixing it and getting new mattresses this cottage would be a gem.
- Wayne, June 2019 -
Anwen “We had a lovely stay in this wonderful house in a very pleasant location.”
The pictures in the listing don’t do justice - we were pleasantly surprised. The house was absolutely lovely and had all the home comforts we needed. The location is ideal with a brilliant park for the kids just a short walk away. The bakery, butchers and grocery store were ideal for buying fresh local produce every day.
- Anwen, April 2019 -
Vickie “Broughton is a fabulous base for exploring the Lake District.”
It has a wonderful old fashioned grocers/butchers where you can get everything you need and great cafes and pubs. Hillside is a welcoming, spacious home from home. Perfect for dog walkers, a breathtaking walk can be reached in less than 2 mins from the house. Highly recommended.
- Vickie, March 2019 -
Chris “Very nice property - only down point was a blocked shower which was therefore unusable”
- Chris, December 2018 -
Sonya “Excellent property.”
Loved the stay + cottage
- Sonya, November 2018 -
Diana “Bath mat in ensuite was not.”

- Diana, October 2018 -
Kath “We have visited the Duddon Valley four times now.”
We love the area and especially Broughton in Furness. This house has been the best place yet and we would book it again and highly recommend it. Very dog friendly too. Fantastic week. Thank you.
- Kath, March 2017 -
Barbara “The pool table was not working again”
- Barbara, March 2017 -
Karen “Fantastic holiday home.”
We arrived to find a christmas tree and welcome goodies waiting for us. We have stayed at this property twice and cannot fault it.
- Karen, December 2016 -
Jacqueline “The house is blessed with a fantastic venue being right on the Square and handy for all the village amenities, including but not exclusively the Post Office, butchers, bakers, green grocers, the Square cafe, tourist information, art & craft centre, petrol station(s), AND the selection of pubs, with our favourite right on the Square, The Manor.”
We have stayed in lots of different accommodation in Broughton but Hillside definitely rates as one of the best, so warm and welcoming and well resourced. It was a first eating home cooked curry in the dining room in front of an open fire! Having stayed previously we appreciated the extra double bed in the family room and would love to come in summer to make the most of the new garden arrangements. Definitely self catering accommodation with much to recommend it, but could be tempted to keep it quiet so we can come again!
- Jacqueline, January 2016 -
Sharon “Comfortable accommodation with lots of space, and it was well equipped.”
The garden was a lovely bonus and the location was great, right in the village square with good local shops, pubs and great restaurant.

Sheila “Hillside is a beautiful and comfortable cottage.”
It was better than the photos and description on your website. A lovely place to come back to after a day out.
- Sheila, June 2015 -
Jenny “A fabulous cottage.”
I don't think the pictures on the website do it justice, it was much more spacious and luxurious than we expected. The location is perfect, and the cottage is spacious and cosy. We couldn't have picked better for our trip to the Lakes.
- Jenny, May 2015 -
Jackie “A beautiful cottage that was spotlessly clean.”
It is located in a very quiet position with the town square, great pubs and a bakery a few minutes' walk away. Also an excellent cafe next door that does an excellent cooked breakfast. An ideal location for touring. Will stay at this property again.
- Jackie, May 2015 -
Barbara “Everything was great.”
- Barbara, March 2015 -
Jenny “The house was very warm and comfortable.”
The snooker room was a great bonus and kept us very happily entertained on wet days and in the evenings.
- Jenny, December 2014 -
Wendy “A lovely cottage; spacious, warm and well equipped.”
Both fires were a roaring success over Christmas and the pool table was a real bonus. In a great location; cafe next door with fabulous food, real ale pub across the road, bakery and shop. Friendly and helpful owner and neighbours and it was a short walk or drive to fells. We will keep coming back again and again..
- Wendy, December 2014 -
Sue “The standard of the cottage was high.”
Sitting in the garden was a delightful way to end each afternoon.
- Sue, June 2014 -
Katy “Lovely house, have now stayed with family twice.”
Great for accessing Coniston and a perfect location with several pubs and cafes on the doorstep. Despite being in the town square we were never disturbed by noise. Will definitely return.
- Katy, May 2014 -
Tina “Broughton-in-Furness is a lovely village and in driving distance of all of the lakes.”
The cottage was homely and comfortable and was warm, with the central heating and coal fires for the evenings. We would thoroughly recommend this as a great place to stay and hope to visit again. There were plenty of walks around the area for all abilities and the valley just a mile from the cottage was spectacular.
- Tina, April 2014 -
Paul “The property was great and the photos do not do it justice; the size or the layout was far better than we expected.”
It was in a great village location.
- Paul, April 2014 -

About the location
BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS
Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.
Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.
