“Tina, Steve and Bertie were so welcoming and we loved the cottage - especially the stunning views of course.”

We enjoyed the area - including the nature-rich and very scenic walks along the river (despite the challenge of lifting the dog over stone stiles), the shops and cafes in Alston and some stunning drives to towns further afield. What a wonderful place!

Cosy, comfy and clean.Amazing setting, quite remote,Alston about 3 miles away provided most of our everyday needs.Such a shame the Garrigill local pub had closed, but there is hope it will reopen. Lovely couple and their dog gave us a warm welcome. We had a lovely week.Thank you.

“Comfortable cottage with everything you need.”

Great view over the valley and very peaceful. Lots of wildlife running around, pheasants, rabbits and a red squirrel. Very relaxed holiday with our dog, and close to various interesting walks, either across the hills or around the reservoirs.

Wendy September 2025

“Loved this little cottage.”

It's warm, cosy and well situated for walks from the door, if you're fit enough to face the walk back up the hill. It has everything you need, and the gated garden was a bonus for my dog. The owners were lovely, there if needed but unobtrusive. Loved watching the rabbits and birds but didn't manage to see the resident red squirrel. Maybe next time!

- Wendy, September 2025

Julia July 2025

“The property was lovely.”

Extremely clean and had electronic cellent views and the garden very much appreciated by the dogs. The welcome pack was also a very kind gesture and very welcome. I would just say you need yo update your directions as the pub listed George and Dragon, is no more and has no sign up so not a landmark to go from. Also to be aware bed to eat out during the day as many establishments were shut most of the week and only open weekends. Other than that we enjoyed our stay.

- Julia, July 2025
Frank July 2025

Plenty of walks from our doorstep or a world of stunning scenery just a short drive away. The fixtures and fittings were all top notch and the cottage was warm and spotlessly clean. Richard November 2024

“Very cosy well equipped secluded cottage with stunning views of the Northern Pennines countryside.”

My stay was in early December but the central heating was spot on. Easy to find from directions and owners Tina and Steve live close by and were always available. One thing to bear in mind is that the bathroom is downstairs but that is a very minor (in)convenience. Well recommended. Easy travelling to either Ullswater, Hadrian's Wall or Teesdale and almost on the Pennine Way. Finally the small market town of Alston is just a few minutes away with a Co op and Spar food shops and petrol station. Well recommended if you wish to get away from it all. .

- Richard, November 2024

“What a beautiful place to stay, cosy , comfortable, very clean, everything there you need for a fantastic stay, the lovely smell of the cottage when you first open the door ( you would never know that dogs had been staying there previously), the views of the scenery are breathtaking, local people very friendly, the cottage owners Tina and Steve are a nice couple they can’t do enough for you, but they don’t intrude on your stay, the eggs from their rare breed chickens are lovely, the only thing we thought was a down point is that the village did not have a pub or place to go and eat, you had to go 4 mile in to Alston to find a couple of places to eat but you definitely need the use of a car as there are no local buses or taxis, we had some lovely walks down along the river and some nice days in Penrith and Lake Windermere.”

Upon arrival we were made welcome, Steve and Tina greeted us and told us about the area and property. The cottage is lovely, very cosey with outstanding views across the valley. The cottage has everything you need for 2 people to stay. Well equipped and comfortable. If you are lucky like ourselves you will see the red squirrel most morning collecting nuts from the holders around the property. Can’t fault this lovely little cottage and it’s owners. Easy driving distance to attractions like beamish.

All COVID measures were in place which didn’t detract from our expectations. The cottage was extremely comfortable and the soft furnishings were attractive. We were met with a lovely welcome pack and the dog was included with goodies for him. Enclosed garden and patio which was such a relief for us as we knew the dog was safe as well as the neighbouring sheep. Plenty of walks nearby, with beautiful panoramic views. “The cottage was beautiful and absolutely spotless.”

The hosts are the nicest people I haven't met! They were next door if we needed them and contact details were supplied but they avoided the awkward check in by leaving us the key and a lovely welcome package and it was really nice after a long drive to let ourselves in and relax. Perfect for a couple or anyone wanting a break, it's so secluded I don't think I spoke to anyone but my boyfriend in 48 hours! We've already recommended to family and will definitely be back.

- Susan, June 2019
Liz June 2019

“The cottage was lovely and clean and had everything you needed except a coffee table and maybe an extra comfy chair as the small settee was uncomfortable for two.”

on arrival there was welcome goodies for us and the dogs which was much appreciated. The views were amazing and we thought we could walk for miles however most walks start with a stile, these are obstacles for old or large dogs and impossible to access.

- Liz, June 2019

Thank you for your feedback. We have taken your comments on board and have now replaced the sofa with a new larger reclining sofa and a small side table as well. Once again many thanks and welcome you again. Property Owner

“The accomodation was superb but just two points I would mention.”

The online information did not indicate that the owners house was so close alongside, they were very nice however and to say that there is Wi-Fi is a little misleading as it was more off than on.

- James, September 2018

Thank you so much for your feedback, With relation to the Wi-Fi we have looked into this and found there was an issue, I sincerely apologise for this. We have since had the issue rectified and can assure you the Wi-Fi is fully working. I hope you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

About the location

GARRIGILL, CUMBRIA

Alston 3.6 miles.

Surrounding this small village is Alston Moor, a beautiful and diverse area known for its rare alpine flora and moorland birds. This was once one of the richest mining areas in Britain and reminders of this industry are everywhere. Grassed-over spoil heaps, sunken pits, rusting machinery and a myriad of tracks and byways all speak of the riches once gleaned from underground. Nestling in these upland valleys are the lead-mining villages of Nenthead and Garrigill. Standing on the River South Tyne, not far from its source, and near Cross Fell is this small village with access to the summit of Burnhope Seat.. The centre of the village is the green, a post office and village store, St John’s church and the village hall, with childrens play area to the rear, are nearby. At Ashgillside and Beldy there are waterfalls namely Ashgill Force and Thortergill Force. The Pennine Way passes through the village on its way from Dufton via Cross Fell, Great Dun Fell and on to Alston. The Alton area was well known for lead mining and there are a number in the area with an award winning lead mining museum only a few miles away at Killhope.
