“Lovely quiet cottage with great facilities.”

Was really pleased to find a coffee machine with plenty of capsules, huge choice of toiletries, milk, eggs, and delicious marmalade and chutney. Bath was fabulous (shower is not good, but I wasn't using it!). Made to feel very welcome and plenty of information about things to do and see.

“We loved our stay at Sycamore cottage.”

it was quiet and surrounded by nature. we particularly loved the views and the garden. Seeing a red squirrel & wood peckers outside the window was a bonus. there is a road that runs outside the front but it was fairly quiet as the location is remote. all the facilities were great and being an upside down house the bedroom was lovely and cool in the very hot weather. the kitchen had everything you would need, plus a few nice extra touches. our host were very friendly nothing was too much trouble. it is perfect for two people. its very well located for things to do in all directions, just a few miles from the lovely village of Hawes that had good amenities if you are into your walking there are walks in every direction, sadly for us we couldn't get out as it was just to hot - but never mind it gives us an excuse to return to the area again thank you so much for your hospitality we just have 1 suggestion I think the bed mattress is tired, it could do with a topper or renewal it wasn't terrible but we could have been more comfortable during the night which is really important on a holiday.

“The furnishings were good and as described.”

We received a warm welcome and were given eggs, cake, cookies, and homemade jam. However, there are a few points that might be of interest to future tenants. The house is located directly on a secondary road. This isn't apparent in the photos, but dogs should be kept on a leash before leaving the house to prevent them from running into the street. The washing machine is located in a shed next to the house. It smells very strongly of solvents, so you wouldn't want to hang your laundry there. The biggest drawback, however, is the shower, which only produces a weak trickle of water with no pressure. Showering is not enjoyable under these circumstances. Another issue is the heating system's exhaust pipe, which exits directly at the living room window. This means that exhaust fumes are drawn directly into the apartment when airing out the room. On the other hand, the fenced garden is a great feature, although we unfortunately couldn't use it due to the weather. However, it would be ideal for dog owners.

Lovely area for walking and a big bonus the Settle to Carlisle railway can be seen. A real treat seeing Sir Nigel Gresley come down the line. Nice shops at Hawes to visit. The owners/neighbours were very friendly and gave great advice about the local area and its interesting history. Had the best nights sleep there. Great base for exploring the dales and being able to come back again to a quiet, homely space. The only real downside was the shower head which didn't really produce much water, personally I didn't really mind as I was only there to hike and rest and there is a bath to use. Really enjoyed my stay and would recommend. A stunning part of the country to be in.

“Generally we enjoyed our stay, very comfy.”

The owners are very generous, in supplying lots of toiletries, never seen so many,they have thought off everything. Plus gave us a lovely jar of homemade marmalade, cakes , milk and eggs to start with. Our only gripe was the shower, it was just a slow trickle,could do with a new shower altogether or more pressure. Nothing was too much trouble, if we needed to know anything. The cottage is in a great position for getting out and about.

The owners live next door to the cottage and are very friendly and helpful. The cottage is in a beautiful and relaxing area and is very homely and well equipped. The nearest supermarkets are in Hawes (6 miles) and Sedburgh (11 miles), so make sure you take any provisions you need. The owners very kindly left 6 fresh eggs, a pint of milk, tea, coffee, biscuits and some cake. The nearest pub is only ¾ mile away and serves food all day. We didn’t get the chance to go there as we either made our own meals at the cottage or ate out in the villages that we visited each day. There are plenty of footpaths available to go walking directly from the cottage. Alternatively, a short drive to the surrounding areas provides many opportunities to go walking, cycling and swimming under waterfalls. A very enjoyable week indeed, and would definitely return for another holiday.

Great location for walking and birdwatching. Hawes only 6 miles away and the famous book town of Sedbergh is 12 miles away. The hosts were welcoming and friendly. No wonder guests return time and again. the kitchen is very well equipped with everything you are likely to need. The hosts provided a welcome tea tray and welcome pack of marmalade,milk, eggs,biscuits, tea and coffee which was a delightful surprise. The eggs were from their own chickens. The bathroom is well stocked including bath products for that long soak in the bath you might want after a day of walking or climbing mountains.There was even a little library on local books on the Dales.

The biscuits (for us and the dog), tea and coffee were very much appreciated on arrival. The cottage was warm and cosy with amazing views, and good pub just up the road (dog friendly) which served lovely food. The only thing the cottage doesn't have is Wi-Fi and neither O2 or Vodaphone have any phone signal, it didn't bother us as its nice to get away from it all, the pub up the road has Wi-Fi if you need it for planning your trips out. The owners were welcoming and friendly and we are planning to return soon.

The location is perfect for exploring the surrounding dales and there are some fantastic waterfalls nearby, and the views were perfect - with the bonus of baby lambs. The Wensleydale Heifer (between Aysgarth and Leybourne) does a fantastic Carvery Lunch, and the Wensleydale and Ginger Cheesecake at the Creamery in Hawes was something else - good job there were plenty of places to walk it off!! Recommend the walk from Aysgarth to Castle Bolton of you have the energy!

The property

Hawes 6 miles. This cosy stone-built end-terrace cottage is situated in the small farming community of Lunds and is superbly placed for enjoying exhilarating walking on the high fells of Upper Wensleydale.

The surrounding countryside is dotted with traditional whitewashed farmsteads and is famous for being along the route of the Settle to Carlisle Railway as it climbs steadily towards Aisgill summit.

The accommodation is upside down to take advantage of the extensive views, and many footpaths lead from the door.

The owners live in the adjacent farmhouse.

There is also a tea room within a mile, making this an ideal retreat for a stay in spectacular countryside.

Leyburn 16 miles.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Standing between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. In 1998 Hawes was awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for the "Best Day Trip Out". Modern traffic has long replaced coaches and horse drawn wagons along its narrow streets, but market day (Tuesdays) in Hawes is as busy as ever, with a farmers’ auction attracting sheep farmers from all over the north of England. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now open to visitors so that they can see the famous cheese being made and sample the end product in a welcoming café. In the old station yard you will find the busy National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum. The Museum is home to the magnificent collection of Dales artefacts by the two great Dales historians and writers, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby.
